    Hi All,

I am new to the MorphOS world. Sorry if I come across as an annoying newbie. But, I have become very excited about amiga for the first time in a while since reading all about MorphOS 2.0. I am really interested in buying an Efika board and running 2.0 on it.

I cannot seem to find any discussion or announcements about actual status or any guestimated ETAs. Anyone got anything like that?

    Thanks!

    Dave

Ok, then I waste a little bit time and help to clean this up and since I'm a friendly person I even add a few bits of 'new' information:

    - Will be avalaible as a free download, on USB storage, and other media. In all cases, a purchasable keyfile is required for full use.

What does USB Storage or other media mean? The MorphOS team is not going to sell USB sticks or stuff. Also most of us are against a real boxed version (you know, printed booklet, produced CDROM all in a paper or dvd box), It's just a waste of time and ressources and usually not very friendly to the environment. We love turtles!

    - Runs on Mac Mini (it has been seen on a video).

The announced MorphOS 2.0 release will not run on a Mac Mini, this is (most likely) planned for a later date first. The release will run on Pegasos, Pegasos2 and EFIKA, like announced. A PowerUP release might follow later (depends on the whole market situation which we will evaluate from the amount of donations for PowerUP 1.4.x).

    - Feature set was frozen back in December 2007.

Some of us added new features this year too. :) We just can't stop.

    - Lots of visual effects (fades, transparency), alpha-channel based in the 3D desktop, including a "cube" function.

As there was stated several times already: while the OS provides all the required groundwork, some of the functions you meantioned here are not built-in (they can be achieved by run special applications/ commodities).

    - Zooming in ambient windows in icon mode.

This is possible in Ambient working on 1.4.x already. No special 2.0 feature or something.

    - Final release of MUI, version 4.

This is IMHO highly unlikely. MUI4 will not *significantly* be more final than the betas you can use already. Just some more features will be available which are disabled on the fly on 1.4 systems (as often seen already: bigger selection of gradients, f.ex.).

    - Several MUI custom classes, used by some programs, included.

Includes f.ex. latest versions of Lamp.mcc, Crawling.mcc, Aboutbox.mcc and a few completly new classes.

    - Regular and 3D screen blankers built in, with power save support.

The power save support is not built into the blankers (would be insane if every blanker had to support it), but built into the 'blanker engine'.

To name a few blankers (oh... featureleak!)... there will be a "Moire" blanker (exactly like the one of MultiCX if you can remember this commodity/hack from AmigaOS days) and a "Nowhere" blanker (see the Nowhere AmiNetRadio plugin).

    - Several utility libraries included ("freetype", "z", "png", possibly "avcodec", "avformat", and lots more).

Add bz2 here too. A library I use very regulary these days.

    - Scientific calculator utility.

Since the calculator of earlier MorphOS versions was so buggy we try to make it good and there will be 2 calculators included in MorphOS 2.0. One scientific/ complicated one for programmers and so one, which (as previously stated already) is a completly reworked/ refurbished MCalc (MUIProCalc) and a smaller cute one mimic'ing the original calculator of AmigaOS 3.1 wich has enhanced keyboard support and hence is useful for some quick/ small calculations.

    - Sketch utility.

Sketch is not an utility, but a big application. Naming it just util doesn't serve it right.

    - Diamonds mind game.

Add Shuffle here too, as mentioned before.

Actually I could check out the reports/ videos/ screenshots of Geits and Fabs presentation and list a lot more of already leake... err... publically know features here, but thats not my job.. isn't it? :)

    regards,
    tokai

    - Improved skin system, with new presets.

    - Improved hotkey support.

    - Regular and 3D screen blankers built in, based in a new "blanker engine", with power management support.

    - Automatic screen mode promotion.

    - Several utility libraries included ("bz2", "freetype", "png", "z", possibly "avcodec", "avformat", and lots more).

    - Sputnik web browser might be included.

    - Separate regular and scientific calculator utilities.

    - Sketch application, much more than the name suggests.

    - Diamonds and Shuffle mind games.

    - System log.

    - Proper shutdown function.

"Might?" I thought I saw Marcik say a version would be.

Indeed. But someone here questioned it and, as I lost the source of this detail, I've thrown in that "might".

Remember, I'm not inventing anything in my status posts. But I can be wrong, or be fooled. I do my best to include the source of every statement. That's not always easy.

Thx for compliing the list. Good work. However, please REMOVE that HIDEOUS "when its done" bs. I hate that this ISNT AW.net!!

    Also to MorphOS 2.0 questions:

    1. Is BurnIt to be included?

    2. What about formating cdrs from the os?

    3. What will be missing from install package that we would have to source out. f.ex amigaguide.library or arexx?

I *really* do hope they manage to keep the release within Q2, although we know by experience how these predicted dates can slip. Both in HW releases and OS releases. Didn't the "1.4" release slip a few weeks as well? And the difference now is that they are going "commercial", AFAIK they will sell MorphOS for money now unlike before. Maybe this sets the quality requirements and the first impression a little bit higher than before? I'm not making premature excuses for anyone here, perhaps there won't even be a problem at all and MorphOS 2.0 will be released as announced, but I must say that I have somewhat lower expectations for a project *of this magnitude* that's entirely being managed and executed in peoples spare time on a more or less "hobby basis".
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)
MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

Why so much pressure about "when" 2.0 will be out? We have been waitting so long... to me it is not a big deal to wait a little more. Not a good idea to have a released version on time but full of bugs and problems just due to the release pressure. Stop bombing the team with all these... Let it come when the team would have finished it and after some testing...

The user base is decreasing, interest too. How can you promote an OS when you left behind most of the users ? Lots of ex MorphOS fans don't even boot their pegs now (i'm one of them, sold my peg2 and will sell my Peg1 soon).
Don't forget also that efika owners who bought an Efika for MorphOS (i did .. years ago) still have a machine they can't use.

If you going to sell your Peg1 please leave me a PM, I am already missing my Peg1 and I am thinking of getting a new one.
Still on the corener of my mind but I would like to know a price...

Back on topic. Why someone not even booting the Peg? It depends on the user of how much interest he could show to his computer. Of course a smooth, attractive and functional OS would make a lot of bonus, but isn't MorphOS already an OS with all those elements? To me it is. I have brought 1.4.5 to my own preferences and you know Peg2 is my main machine, I got no PC. I think that if someone is really intereted in MorphOS and Peg he would not remain with a computer inactive for ages just because MorphOS 2 is not out yet. Someone should remain in the foreground, trying to make his own Peg / MorphOS setup better -there is a lot of software arround- and when 2.0 comes it will be fine!

I do not know maybe you may detected some enthusiasm into my words cause I am new in MorphOS but after all it is the most magnificent OS I have operated so far.

Your point about efika is correct. I do not know if MorphOS support ha sbeen announced before Efika was released, I think that the official announcement about MorphOS support came after the Efika release. But if MorphOS and only MorphOS was the main reaosn for all thos epeople to get the Efika, yes they got a point to wait for a new MorphOS release.

I am afraid that video playback will be left out from Multiview 2 since there was not enough time to finalize it. I have not got much time to improve video class and since it crashes for some users it probably must be pulled out. It is not decided yet but time is running out.

There are however other new features. Multiview supports Unicode and can display both Unicode text files (UTF-8/16/32) and guides (i.e. in theory one could write guide file in Russian and it would be displayed properly on all machines).
