    Hi All,

I am new to the MorphOS world. Sorry if I come across as an annoying newbie. But, I have become very excited about amiga for the first time in a while since reading all about MorphOS 2.0. I am really interested in buying an Efika board and running 2.0 on it.

I cannot seem to find any discussion or announcements about actual status or any guestimated ETAs. Anyone got anything like that?

    Thanks!

    Dave

    nice little short report thanks!
i've got two short video from alchemie07 about the mos presentation, but it is all in french, it would be good to have subtitles (like the hungarian scenecon presentation does), and i think the video was made on a digicam (canon Sx perhaps), the screen is too brith, cant see nothin.

but ppl, it has been told a 152184984121x times why mos-team is "silent". thery are not. but you wont get any press-releases, empty promises, etc... you have to hunt the information. it can be hard, but entertaining:)

I wouldn't expect so. That would mean that video playback is integrated in the system, as, for example, Windows Media API. In my opinion, it's not a good idea. I've been suffering the codec hell already in my work's computer. Having a single, separate program for media playback ("MPlayer", for example), which has everything inside, looks like a good, old school idea.

-> videos are shown by thumbnail AND you can play them when you put the mouse over the icon/thumbnail.

My Alchimie's report is now at 80% done.

So you think datatypes and reggae are better left out of MorphOS 2.0?

Nooo! And, after reading that comment about having video preview in Ambient, I'm sure MorphOS 2.0 will look terrific!

Update (thanks to Daff's updates, as seen in the Alchimie 2007 party MorphOS presentation, with a report available at Obligement site):

    General:

    - Release date: icon_whendone.gif. BBRV has commented in their blog a certain "hopefully before the end of the year".

    - Will cost money. Different amounts have been mentioned, heavily discussed, and even polled.

    - Will have some form of online registration system, for which an internet connection will be mandatory. The registration is on a per-machine basis, so a user with two machines will most likely have to buy two licenses.

    Hardware support:

    - Runs on the Efika (it has been shown several times already).

    - Does have "the same support for Pegasos I as Pegasos II" has. "MorphOS developers also have Pegasos I".

    - Will possibly have a version for Amigas with PowerPC accelerators, but not as a commercial product (Jacek "jacadcaps" Pisczcek: "If it gets released, it would continue being released on the same terms as before and not as a boxed product").

    - Support for the Marvell Discovery gigabit ethernet port.

    - Early "startup menu", as can be seen on Geit's site.

    - Support for ATi 9800 graphics cards.

    - Multiple monitor support.

    Features:

    - Feature set will be available when the release preparation is done. As it's widely known, developers are not interested in spending time informing users, and consider actual development more important. So most features have to be gathered from evidence out there.

    - AltiVec acceleration in several areas of the system, and support for it in development tools.

    - Enhanced support for pluggable schedulers.

    - Different graphics functions ("layers3d"), that allow for hardware accelerated windows, as can be seen on Geit's site. This "3Dlayers" feature "requires a Radeon with at least 64 MB".

    - Lots of visual effects (fades, transparency), alpha-channel based in the 3D desktop, including a "cube" function.

    - Video thumbnails with playback in ambient.

    - Zooming in ambient windows in icon mode.

    - New Multiview, MUI based, with video playback, and new features like tabs.

    - Reggae integrated into Ambient (Grzegorz "Krashan" Kraszewski: "Reggae is a part of MorphOS 2.0. Most of Reggae decoders are faster than datatypes. If AltiVec is not available, Reggae switches to non-AltiVec routines. Reggae enabled Ambient uses datatypes too. If Reggae does not recognize a file, datatypes are the next try".

    - Archives and ISO files integrated into ambient.

    - 64 bit support in DOS.

    - SFSDoctor included.

    - New HDConfig.

    - New Poseidon with significant updates in the USB stack, and the way it's implemented.

    - Native TCP/IP support, as can be seen in the Efika presentation held at the SceneCON 2k7 party.

    - Improved system preferences tool.

    - Improved AHI system, and optical audio output.

    - Final release of MUI, version 4.

    - Several MUI custom classes, used by some programs, included.

    - Improved skin system, with new presets.

    - Improved hotkey support.

    - Regular and 3D screen blankers built in, with power save support.

    - Automatic screen mode promotion.

    - Several utility libraries included ("freetype", "z", "png", possibly "avcodec", "avformat", and lots more).

    - Sputnik web browser.

    - Scientific calculator utility.

    - Sketch utility.

    - Diamonds mind game.

    - System log.

    - Proper shutdown function.

But I like the idea! :-)

In the thread "Implementing some of Mac OSX Leopard's features", kiero writes:

    Quote:

"How exactly does Ambient view images internally? Would that be displaying thumbnails of image files?"

It can do that, yes (with realtime zooming too:). It also has modular view functionality, which means each window can show multiple contents types. For example clicking on image can show it in same window where it's icon was. Changing directory can show icons in same window where the picture was displayed. Same thing works for text, list and boopsi(datatypes) views.

It looks like Reggae, the new Ambient and MUI4 will bring a totally new level of user environment to MorphOS, and in some ways it looks like *they are* taking steps towards "Implementing some of Mac OSX Leopard's features" into MorphOS. Kind of, at least... ;-)

    Tarbos,

    you can (re)download http://fabportnawak.free.fr/mplayer/MPlayer-1.0rc2.lha

Sound is still crappy and not always sync, but it's the source fault.

    @ Fab

First of all thank you for all the programs you kindly port for us.

I used the new version of MPlayer and indeed it works. However on all the movies from Alchemie7 MPlayer now signals (among the other things):

    AHI: Using 0x10011 AudioID.
AHI: Using 942 bytes per chunk and 29 Kb for buffer

then a requester opens (the window is named "filesave.audio") and asks for a filename.

If I press "Cancel" the window closes, MPlayer signals:

    AHI: Unable to start playing.
    AO: [ahi_dev] 7875Hz 1ch s16be (2 bytes per sample)
    Starting playback...

and finally playback starts and the sound is fine.

If I specify a filename in the requester, then MPlayer signals

    AO: [ahi] 7875Hz 1ch s16be (2 bytes per sample)
    Starting playback...

and playback starts but the audio is not heard because it is redirected into the file.

All the movies created by my digital camera (whose audio was played too fast by previous MPlayer versions) now are played with correct audio (and the filesave.audio requester does not appear). In such a case MPlayer signals:

    AHI: Using 0x30001 AudioID.
AHI: Using 960 bytes per chunk and 30 Kb for buffer
    AO: [ahi] 8000Hz 1ch s16be (2 bytes per sample)
    Starting playback...

    and everything works fine.

Maybe for some reason Alchemie7 movies trigger an erroneous AudioID selection...

    DoctorMorbius_FP,

yes, i saw that filesave requester and will investigate a bit later about that. Anyway, cancelling it is enough for now, as you could notice.

Well, you're right. There is no doubt that I can live with the filesave requester and simply cancel it. It's clear that your fix solves problems bigger than this one.

Anyway, such complex programs like MPlayer and MEncoder always create doubts in the user when something does not work properly. Typical questions are:

    A) Does the problem affect other users?
    B) Is the problem a real bug or an effect of my incompetence?
    C) Is the problem a bug of the ported program or of the original program?

Actually I reported the filesave requester problem just because I was curious to know the answers to questions A and B.

I also have another problem concerning the muxing of video files and AC3 audio files with MEncoder, that I used extensively in the last two years. In such a case questions B and C arise. Because of my lazyness I never sent you a report, but now it is time to send you an e-mail about it, if you agree.

Update (thanks to JoBBo, BBRV, Zylesea and Matt "Neko" Sealey, in a Power Developer thread):

    General:

    - Release date: icon_whendone.gif. There's chances that it will be released in three months from now, as "feature set was frozen on 31 December 2007. Bug fixing is underway" (BBRV), and "JoBBo recently gave a rough and unofficial estimate of a releae date: ~3 month from now" (Zylesea). But "it's perfectly possible to bring it up to scratch in 3 months, though, as it was probably perfectly possible LAST Christmas to do it with what they had then" (Neko).

    Features:

    - Already frozen, now bugfixing. Check older posts in this thread for feature details.
