MorphOS 2.0 Status

    Hi All,

I am new to the MorphOS world. Sorry if I come across as an annoying newbie. But, I have become very excited about amiga for the first time in a while since reading all about MorphOS 2.0. I am really interested in buying an Efika board and running 2.0 on it.

I cannot seem to find any discussion or announcements about actual status or any guestimated ETAs. Anyone got anything like that?

    Thanks!

    Dave

And you are very right to do so. My updates in this thread are only based in what I gather from a few, non official sources. Actually, for something so sensitive as this, I'm carefully quoting someone else's words, not suggesting anything on my own.

That's some pretty serious contempt shown to Matt Sealey who's post was hardly out of line. No wonder mere users don't even get a look in - we're less than insects to those guys.

Tell you though, if people like Matt Sealey deserve to have the dummy spat at them for saying anything about MorphOS then there's a certain group of devs that are going to have to swallow their contempt and start communicating properly with users.

There were far too much examples during 2007 to prove why the above statement is simply not true. In fact, everything which is sure and decided about MOS 2.0 was told and presented at various shows. Maybe even more. Some upcoming parts and smaller utils were released. If that's not enough for you, well, no one can help you with that.

And about the insect part... Well yeah, you're right that fixing bugs is more important ATM, than making useless and meaningless announcements to take care of some people's feelings... ;-)

Oh BTW why is www.morphxs.net and morphos.org still running? Almost the first thing that comes up from google :( On an early date I got the reaction from that site that it was true and the development of MOS has halted completely. Thankfully I digged a bit deeper... IMO the Official MOS page should be updated more frequently.

There is just one official Morphos website.

    http://www.morphos-team.net/

The two you mention are no longer accessible
for members of the current developerteam.

And the more people post this URL, the more googlebot finds it, the more it stays at the top list of any search result...

Is it really that hard to update the morphos-team site, and add a title like "Work in progress", which just contained links to sites with photos and reports of recent presentations? It would make a HUGE difference, with a tiny effort.
Hell, anyone of us could write the HTML code. If only we had access to the server... The public image of MorphOS could very well be done by any reasonable person here.

Agree. Making an announcement is not useless, as it helps people understanding what's happening, what to expect and what to wait for. Furthermore I'm sure that developers spend more time on IRC chatting about meaningless topics (which are indeed "meaningless" it only can help to relax) while writing an announcement or update the MorphOS-team website would take just a few minutes... But who I am to judge...

There are thousands of topics about this. No, it will not run on Efika2, as nobody have seen Efika2 yet.

Update (thanks to Andr? "Jobbo" Siegel, "Velcro_SP", Stefan "Takemehomegrandma" Brodin, Sigborn "CISC" Skjaret and Jacek "jacadcaps" Pisczcek):

    General:

    - Release date: icon_whendone.gif. The official MorphOS site news says that the Public Release is Scheduled for Q2/2008. This announcement has been made on the April Fools day.

    - Will cost money. Different amounts have been mentioned, heavily discussed, and even polled.

    - Will be avalaible as a free download, on USB storage, and other media. In all cases, a purchasable keyfile is required for full use.

    Hardware support:

    - Runs on Mac Mini (it has been seen on a video).

    - Runs on the Efika (it has been shown several times already).

    - Does have "the same support for Pegasos I as Pegasos II" has. "MorphOS developers also have Pegasos I".

    - Will possibly have a version for Amigas with PowerPC accelerators (depends on the amount of donations), but not as a commercial product (Jacek "jacadcaps" Pisczcek: "If it gets released, it would continue being released on the same terms as before and not as a boxed product").

    - Support for the Marvell Discovery gigabit ethernet port.

    - Early "startup menu", as can be seen on Geit's site.

    - Support for ATi 9800 graphics cards.

    - Multiple monitor support.

    Features:

    - Feature set was frozen back in December 2007.

    - AltiVec acceleration in several areas of the system, and support for it in development tools.

    - Enhanced support for pluggable schedulers.

    - Different graphics functions ("layers3d"), that allow for hardware accelerated windows, as can be seen on Geit's site. This "3Dlayers" feature "requires a Radeon with at least 64 MB".

    - Lots of visual effects (fades, transparency), alpha-channel based in the 3D desktop, including a "cube" function.

    - Video thumbnails with playback in ambient.

    - Zooming in ambient windows in icon mode.

    - New Multiview, MUI based, with video playback, and new features like tabs.

    - Reggae integrated into Ambient (Grzegorz "Krashan" Kraszewski: "Reggae is a part of MorphOS 2.0. Most of Reggae decoders are faster than datatypes. If AltiVec is not available, Reggae switches to non-AltiVec routines. Reggae enabled Ambient uses datatypes too. If Reggae does not recognize a file, datatypes are the next try".

    - Archives and ISO files integrated into ambient.

    - 64 bit support in DOS.

    - SFSDoctor included.

    - New HDConfig.

    - New Poseidon with significant updates in the USB stack, and the way it's implemented.

    - Native TCP/IP support, as can be seen in the Efika presentation held at the SceneCON 2k7 party.

    - Improved system preferences tool.

    - Improved AHI system, and optical audio output.

    - Final release of MUI, version 4.

    - Several MUI custom classes, used by some programs, included.

    - Improved skin system, with new presets.

    - Improved hotkey support.

    - Regular and 3D screen blankers built in, with power save support.

    - Automatic screen mode promotion.

    - Several utility libraries included ("freetype", "z", "png", possibly "avcodec", "avformat", and lots more).

    - Sputnik web browser.

    - Scientific calculator utility.

    - Sketch utility.

    - Diamonds mind game.

    - System log.

    - Proper shutdown function.

The 2 latter should still not be considered as a definite feature, I still reserve the right to take them out at any time before the final product as they depend on several factors (some within my control, some not) that I need to deem satisfactory before I can sanction a public release.

Well, I can't remember now every source of information, but be sure that there's zero invention in my list: It all comes from gathered bits, mostly from posts in this very site.
Perhaps some things have changed in the meantime, and I simply didn't realize. I do my best to follow the MorphOS world, but I can be wrong.
I'm willing to correct the list anytime, and to grow it too. Please state current situation about the things you find wrong or misleading.
