MorphOS 2.0 Status

    Hi All,

I am new to the MorphOS world. Sorry if I come across as an annoying newbie. But, I have become very excited about amiga for the first time in a while since reading all about MorphOS 2.0. I am really interested in buying an Efika board and running 2.0 on it.

I cannot seem to find any discussion or announcements about actual status or any guestimated ETAs. Anyone got anything like that?

    Thanks!

    Dave

Hello, nothing to update printing ?
    it's very bad news ! :-(

No enough reply to the subject ?
Perhaps not all MOS users read all sujbjects here...
    Perhaps some users simply waitting.

    have a nice night :-)

Printing was Always 3rd Party. Irsee Soft as CISC said. And they are a real company and dont devote resources to hobby projects for obvious reasons... they would have to be paid for an update.

    Magnetic..

I was thinking one K plus users every month or so-a properly marketed Efika/MOS 2 combo, available easily at Fry's (big west coast US electronics geek mecca) could do that.

I think bPlan can build as many Efikas as anyone could want, but I'm hoping things get together in such a way as to market this system right-for example in 'Make' and 'Nuts and Volts' magazines and in hobbyist oriented electronics stores. Not to mention in car multimedia arenas as well.

1K users per month? More like that many per week!

We need to get out of the bedroom coder box and start thinking like real companies with real products that we can sell to 'customers'. You know, people who throw down money for things which they then use ;-)

A tiny bit of that would involve MOS core team getting a little polish behind them, I think BBRV try to do this from time to time.

That was one of the ways Amiga, Inc screwed up with developers-they had this system in place and it was run by, frankly, a rather surly individual whose public demonstrations/speeches scared a ton of people away. I'm not saying MOS guys did/do that but there's a lesson to be learned there. Among the many things AI taught us NOT to do ;-)

They had this rather efficient media friendly mouthpiece in the shape of McEwen, but sadly lacked the tech/money to back up his claims. MorphOS side more than has the tech, but I think they need a MOS specific media friendly mouthpiece to sell what they have so the core team doesn't have to. At least there is a real product which works, and somewhat of a means to get the money side of it up to speed.

But, back on topic, MOS 2.0 is looking great! Even if someone here just culled out the biggest, nicest features and wrote it up in a friendly way, then distributed it around inside and outside our insular community, it could go a long way in the right direction.

I would but my hosting package doesn't give me that feature because they want to sell Microsoft services.

The other week they introduced a new feature: PayPal. Unbelievable.

While we're talking about MorphOS status...

I assume the issues stated at http://www.morphos.net/ have been resolved otherwise there wouldn't be an EFIKA port ?

In that case, isn't it time that page was removed otherwise new people will think that MorphOS development is stopped.

The site's owner is in no way involved in MorphOS at the moment. If you want it removed, talk to him. I doubt he'll listen though.

C.U.P.S. is the fastest way to get past, present and future drivers for printers. MorphOS needs to be able to print to grow. Why bother to make an office program for MOS if it struggles to print?

Ummm porting CUPS is a huge coding task...

Don't you think they have thought of that already?

As far as TP/ Irseesoft it costs $$ to make drivers and its not cheap i'm sure...

To edit and read Word documents. Printing is probably the least needed function there.

There are not resources to include everything but the kitchen sink in the MorphOS. Developing our own printer drivers is not an option.

There are 31 entries in Aminet's printer driver section several of them relatively recent. Don't you have somebody to pull one from the stack, make some emails to get permission, polish it up, and include it?

What good would that do? Besides, how about just downloading them?

I don't define printing as some overkill or bloat feature of an OS, which is implied it seems to me by the phrase "everything but the kitchen sink." To recommend MorphOS to new users is made more difficult by having to warn them "oh you will have to figure out some way to print on your own."

Printing works just fine in MorphOS, there's even quite a large list of printer-drivers included, many which still work with recent printers...

..and if you happen to have a PostScript printer you don't even need a driver from programs that can produce PS output (APDF, PageStream, htmldoc, etc (alternatively, if you pay an insignificant amount to Irseesoft, you get the very latest version of TurboPrint with even more drivers (and the capability to use PostScript Definition files which come with every PS printer driver package)))

    Quote:

How about just ONE driver for a modern printer? It would be endurable to say to prospective new users "if you need to print, you have to buy one of this model printer." Heck, maybe Genesi could offer the printer as an option with the Efika.

Apart from that being an appalling solution Genesi can't even bundle a gfxcard that works with MorphOS these days...

Nah, not really what I meant. It is either we use TP or develop our own printing system. And this is where kitchen sink walks in. The shortest way to get there is probably CUPS but there is no time for everything.

from my point of view, MOS needs the following to be actually usable and start getting attention:

    1. An Office Suite
    2. a printer driver that works with current printers
    3. a modern browser
    4. some native good FTP client like AmiTradeCenter

plus some other utils that will certainly appear as the userbase grows...

    What is wrong in AmiTradeCenter?

Besides you should have written 'good SFTP client' (i.e. an SFTP client with GUI). FTP is really blast from the past.

the last ATC version crashes on MOS.
also FTP is usefull still. just transfering files across your LAN is enough _without_ having to install samba or whatever in MOS...

Ok then, to lure in new users to get into the MOS arena, you buy hardware - Efika, which is cheap, then double the price to run MOS, but, if you want to print (modern) you will need to pay more? For a function that is considered standard on all other systems. :-?

It seems that there is somebody interested in modern printing on MOS,
after all. Yet nobody commented on the bounty proposal I already
remembered a couple of pages ago in this very thread:
    https://morph.zone/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?topic_id=4859&forum=9#47106

(scroll down a fair bit to find it).
Given that it seems unlikely that the MOS-team itself will negotiate a
new licence with IrseeSoft, maybe because this might rise the price
of MOS above the desired, isn't this a good target for a self-bounty,
if one day the bounty system will be working again? The bounty
requirements should be precisely outlined (say, the results should be
included in the MOS releases to be, they should include a native
version of TP 7.60 and all the related programs, and this version
should be compatible with the Linux drivers, which already is the
case, at least partially, so IrseeSoft would minimize maintenance on
the MOS version, and we would have recent drivers as soon as they get
released for Linux...) in order to guarantee satisfaction.
I don't think there are many realistic alternatives: a single driver
would be actually much worse than the situation we have now (with the
old TP version included and a bunch of drivers), and there's nobody
that have enough time to port CUPS right now... So, it would be
interesting to contact IrseeSoft and hear what are their requirements.

    Kind regards,
    Andrea
