    Hi All,

I am new to the MorphOS world. Sorry if I come across as an annoying newbie. But, I have become very excited about amiga for the first time in a while since reading all about MorphOS 2.0. I am really interested in buying an Efika board and running 2.0 on it.

I cannot seem to find any discussion or announcements about actual status or any guestimated ETAs. Anyone got anything like that?

    Thanks!

    Dave

IT'S going to be neccesary to keep up that license in a good place. In case you lose your key, you ought to register again.

Anyway, it seems that the end of the wait for morphos2.0 is nearest than ever. :-)

this I want to know too, hunting old cards is not funny LOL
but I wonder, does a newer card make a speed difference on the 1x AGP bus of the pegII ? :-?

I don't know what to say about this. Of course I understand your point. But I have 2x Pegasos 2 and one Pegasos 1, I have one Efika and will probably be buying 2 more.

I have always understood that at some point you would start charging money for the OS, but nevertheless I also kind of expected to have MorphOS running on *all* my PPC hardware. I don't know what I expected, probably that I would buy the OS *once* and simply being able to install and use it on all my supported computers. Like I did with AmigaOS.

I really think you should set up the conditions carefully when it comes to this. I fully understand and accepts the point of *activating* the OS on a per-machine basis (to use M$ terminology), but that does not exclude the possibility to craft the license to for instance allowing one buyer (consumer/non-commercial) of the OS to install it on, say, 2-3 computers (this would be an ideal approach IMHO)! Or maybe some kind of rebate approach; like buy one OS for 100% of the the price of a single copy, buy two copies for 150% of a single copy, three copies for 175%, four copies for 200%, etc? Or maybe a combination of both approaches?

I want to use MorphOS on all my supported computers, I really do, but there is no way I'm paying 6x 100 Euros for that pleasure (even 6x 50 Euros are way too steep for me when it comes to this purpose). The only remaining options in this case will be disappointment, or piracy (combined with disappointment).

So I beg you to make the license conditions and/or pricing terms a little flexible.

MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

Me too. But it's a pity that a network connection is mandatory for this.

We don't know any more details about the registration system, but we all tend to think in the most negative way (interesting...).
I guess that MorphOS team can do whatever they choose with the licensing system. My interest is mostly technical. I suppose that, for MorphOS 2.0 to work, it will need a special key file, perhaps with the network chip MAC address encrypted into it. I hope that MorphOS team is able to generate such a file offline, given a certain MAC address.
That way, I could validate my Pegasos at home (where I have no network connection). Or, if I change hardware, I can ask for a new file.
Let's hope this doesn't get as nuts as in Windows...

Whatever you might want to say, better to use the dedicated

    ;-)
BTW, you definitely seem to invest quite a lot in HW: don't you think
there's at least as much work behind software too? I know soft is less
"concrete" than hard (as the name reflects) and this often leads to
the conclusion that they don't have the same value... and indeed, you
    just can't pirate a motherboard! :-P

    Kind regards,
    Andrea

Beeing a SW guy, too , I am not willing to pay more than 50Euros for 2.0 for all of my 4 Pegs together.

    Here's why:

    1) I can only use one of my Peg at one time (e.g: On different homes ..). So a floating license would be the fairest .. but seems impossible to realize on MorphOs.

    2) The uncertain future of MorphOS ( the long wait for 1.5 ..) and the closed source nature ( the holy grail of the secret team..) raises questions if there is any sense in investing time and money now.
MorphOs really teached me the disadvantages of beeing dependend on a weak supported, closed source Os. (Which I didn't experience from Windows,Qnx or AmigaOS before.)

    3) It's just a hobby ! MorphOS is just usefull for guys with an Amiga-history in their lifes. You cannot expect to be a commercial full time programer, earing money from the MorphOS community.. It's just the wrong market !
MorphOs has no commercial use for anyone of us, so you cannot charge like the Windows or MacOs guys ..

So be kind and make a nice price, because MorphOs is nothing without it's users... except for a dead OS ..

I second all three of your points, as well as the last line.

Please support the users that supports MorphOS by buying it, using it, developing for it, promoting it, etc. Fair pricing and licensing conditions is definitely one way of doing it! :-)

To be able to use MOS, you need to spend considerable money on a Peg
or Efika. Yes, even the Efika is not free. Furthermore, to be of any
use to the MOS community, you need to actually spend significant time
    on your MOS machine.

I think if someone is not willing to pay even 50 EUR, this person is
not likely to be of any use to the community. Sure, it's quite
different if you're a poor student in a low income country or if you
have a well paid job. But everyone has basic hardware costs, and
adding a lower sum on top of that should not be insurmountable.

Personally, I would be prepared to spend up to 100 Euro on MorphOS 2.0, one time, but not six times that.

If you want a community, that does nothing but pay, this would be called "customers".

"Community" should be part of the project.

BTW: I did some bugfixing in some linux-drivers and apps. Although I am not willing to spend any money on buying linux, I spend some work, which might be much more worthy than a few bucks.

My motivation was not to fix linuxbugs for other people, but for my own. To have the bugfixes included in the next releases, I contacted the maintainers which put the fixes into their products.

On Mos these bugs would have been annoying to me for "1.5 more" years..

Judas: Maybe you never paid anything for your peg, but most people
did. If you then have problems paying something little for MOS, I'd
say you're either not really interested, or you must be part of some
weird religion. Which is fine, but then I wonder how much you'd really
contribute to the MOS community in the first place.

Maybe the issue of multiple machines is a problem, maybe not.
Personally I wouldn't upgrade my Peg1. MOS 1.4 will keep running just
as well on it as it has for years. Considering the low hardware price
and limited scope of usefulness for the Efika, maybe it would make
sense to have a lower price for that. Schemes offering a lower price
for a second copy, etc, would always mean that people could get two
copies, one for themselves, one for a friend. So there are definitely
    some arguments against that.

I did't get my Peg1, and 3 Peg2 for free. I payed the full prices. In my opinion the price was much to high for the board alone .. it was a price for board + MorphOs.

On my PC I own an DSP soundsystem. The board was very expensive, too. But software updates (incl. bugfixes) are free. I expected Peg's to work this way.

Last not least, selling MorphOS at a high price would be unfair against all the coders, which help to make MorphOS useable. ( IP Stack, GUI-Staff, browsers ..) . Maybe they should charge 50 bucks each ?

This would end up very expensive for an OS without memory protection, no posix layer, no real multiusermanagement, very very old emulated software and no competetive plattform left to buy.
Why still use it ? Because it's a hobby (and not because it's an essential killerapp everyone needs. )

Last time I checked, 99% of such people were already using MorphOS 2.0. For free too.

It was in fact a price for board + MorphOS 1.4.x. It doesn't matter
what you *think* about the price, the fact is that MOS2.0 was *not*
included. If you run an auto repair shop, just because someone
"thinks" their new car was too expensive, doesn't matter they can come
to you and get free repairs forever.

not that i find the morphOS price topic exciting but f i were asked to give my opinion on it i would rather think of a discount for Pegasos/MorphOS 1.4 owners. As Pegasos buyers were supposed to have MoprhOS 1.5 as a free upgrade as it was planned at that time.

Changing the name to MorphOS 2.0 is a clever trick though.

Well... do you blame MorphOS Developers for what happened to Thendic France then? MorphOS 1.5/2.0 could be "free" for the end user if it were to be properly financed. It wasn't. It isn't.

don't get me wrong, i'm not blaming anyone here.
only speaking from a straight customer/user point of view and not getting into drama.
I think users are already paying with their patience and not leaving to another platform. Devotion to MorphOS is priceless.
I'll be glad to pay for MorphOS 2.0 anyway, whatever will be the price.

    million

    German Reichsmarks (pre 1948) ?

    Confederate Dollars ?

    Penaut-shells ?

    A few words:

Not all developers have access to MOS1.99999 :-P

Paying xx Euros is o.k., paying xx Euros for every MOS-capable piece of HW ain't.

What exact sum is o.k. would offcourse depend on what actually is in MOS2.0.

True, but most of those who wanted to have it, already do. Most of the time all it takes is to ask and show us that the dev really is doing something.
