    Hi All,

I am new to the MorphOS world. Sorry if I come across as an annoying newbie. But, I have become very excited about amiga for the first time in a while since reading all about MorphOS 2.0. I am really interested in buying an Efika board and running 2.0 on it.

I cannot seem to find any discussion or announcements about actual status or any guestimated ETAs. Anyone got anything like that?

    Thanks!

    Dave

Since one page in this forum is 20 posts long, I suppose this thread can get one page longer by the countdown alone! :-P
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)
MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

There is such a lack of diversity in operating systems now. A new version of MorphOS now would mean a lot. I was catching up on Zeta OS last night. It seems to have folded a bit more than a year ago, at version 1.51. There are the not-quite-there-yet and won't-be-quite there-yet projects like Haiku and there's FreeDOS, but after that what? A bunch of Linuxes and then Windows and Mac OS. Not much diversity. So a new MorphOS version would really be great and a real serious accomplishment.

i guess we don't live on the same planet. On the planet i live you can also use many different OSes like Solaris (OpenSolaris), BSD-OSes (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD etc), QNX, and more, more, more...

Update: Multiview features, thanks to itix, "layers3d" requirements, SDK availability thanks to jacadcaps and CISC.

    General:

    - The official MorphOS site news says that the Public Release is Scheduled for Q2/2008. This announcement has been made on the April Fools day, but has been strongly confirmed.

    - Will cost money. Different amounts have been mentioned, heavily discussed, and even polled.

    - Will be avalaible as a free download only (there won't be a "boxed" product). A purchasable keyfile is required for full use.

    Hardware support:

    - Runs on the Efika 5200B.

    - Will have the same support for Pegasos I as Pegasos II has (MorphOS developers also have Pegasos I).

    - Will possibly have a PowerUP version (depends on the amount of donations), but not as a commercial product.

    - Has been seen running on Mac Mini, but it won't be available in the first release.

    - Has been seen running on QEmu (patched to emulate a Pegasos 2 and SmartFirmware).

    - Has support for Marvell Discovery gigabit ethernet port.

    - Has an early startup menu.

    - Has 2D support for ATI R300 based graphics cards (R200 have both 2D and 3D support).

    - Multiple monitor support.

    Features:

    - Feature set wasn't completely frozen back in December 2007.

    - AltiVec acceleration in several areas of the system, and support for it in development tools.

    - Enhanced support for pluggable schedulers.

    - New graphics functions ("layers3d"), that allow for hardware accelerated windows, given some hardware requirements.

    - New visual effects (fades, transparency), are possible, even the "desktop cube".

    - Video thumbnails with playback in ambient.

    - New Multiview, MUI based, with new features like tabs, and Unicode support, both in text and guides. Video playback had to be left out because there was no time to finalize it.

    - Has Reggae integrated into Ambient.

    - Archives and ISO files integrated into ambient.

    - 64 bit support in DOS.

    - SFSDoctor included.

    - New HDConfig.

    - New Poseidon with significant updates in the USB stack, and the way it's implemented.

    - New native TCP/IP support.

    - Improved system preferences tool.

    - Improved AHI system, and optical audio output.

    - Final release of MUI, version 4 (not significantly more than the already available beta versions).

    - Several new and updated MUI custom classes included.

    - Improved skin system, with new presets.

    - Improved hotkey support.

    - Regular and 3D screen blankers built in, based in a new "blanker engine", with power management support.

    - Automatic screen mode promotion.

    - Updated software development kit ("SDK"), but not available immediately due to lack of time.

    - Several utility libraries included ("bz2", "freetype", "png", "z", possibly "avcodec", "avformat", and lots more).

    - Sputnik web browser will be included.

    - Separate regular and scientific calculator utilities.

    - Sketch application, much more than the name suggests.

    - Diamonds and Shuffle mind games.

    - System log.

    - Proper shutdown function.

I agree with ThePlayer, also for me linuxx suxx.
But I must admint that with my new (used) IBook G4 I'm discovering a little bit MacOS and think Apple did a nice job hiding un*x under their OS.
But hey, this is Morphzone, so I hope in the very very near future to see many posts of users like me who bought Mos 2.0 and are happily installing it in their ppc Macs...
    :-)

Is there a VGA card compatibility list with MorphOS? Preferably listing both 2D and 3D features?

Except QNX which is very special, like MacOSX, it's possible to consider the others are all the same...
More or less the same components compiled from the same source, all implementing the same APIs, all looking the same... only packaging, a few tools and the kernel implementation details differing a bit... Put a noob in front of any of them and he will never be able to tell what is what...
Not really what I consider as diversity.

Good work jcmarcos. It's nice to know what to expect in 2.0.

Do the MorphOS team have any information on price yet ? That would seem to be an important thing that is not dependent on debugging etc.

    @everyone

I don't understand why people want screenshots, most of the new features are "under the hood". I guess it would be nice to see the new multiview and other tools; but Ambient and MUI4 have probably not changed very much since the last release.

I am a regular Linux user and I have used many distributions over the years. I feel that MorphOS is a nice compact system and Linux is simply not so efficient, maybe even bloated. Sometimes parts get trimmed but sometimes they get bigger (think Firefox).

I can't agree with the posts that say Linux has to be configured by shell; 95% of configurations don't need shell. I think you guys are talking about adding *unsupported* features - of course there is not going to be a slick GUI.

Anyway, I continue to use both; my preference is MorphOS though!

If the release makes it on time for June's last weekend (and not June the 30th) then it is kind of
"two more weeks" now - which is somehow a bit scary...

I think we all seem to overlook the term "Second Quarter..." From
a corporate standpoint it could mean the second quarter of the
"Fiscal" calendar... so it could mean anytime between Jan 1 and Dec
31st... Some companies Fiscal calender is very different then the
calendar we rely on... Just food for thought. I work with several
different companies that mandate that I bill them around there fiscal
calendar... which doesn't look anything like the months of the
calendar and often span two different calendar years...

    Two more weeks now!

To be honest, if this really was the case we would have gotten a sign about this, but its stone dead.

I we are going to need another estimation date in two weeks.

In the UK, the fiscal year starts in April. So Q2 fiscal year would be until the end of September.

I don't think MorphOS team mean the end of September; I think they mean Q2 is the start of April to the end of June. Yes, just 2 more weeks, really! (But could be sooner...)
