I'm hoping there are a lot more people monitoring the situation and will buy a mac mini as soon as it's released or after they've heard what it is like from people (like our selves) that get MorphOS"3" right away.
As you say, I don't think the MorphOS team are in this for the money. By porting to the mac mini they give themselves a nice platform to expand their OS on without relying on a hardware manufacturer to provide it for them.

Very well said and I agree that many people are smart to wait until the port is finished and prices of G4 PPC MacMinis have gone down even more due to the passage of time. I did not mean to sound like there should be many more members on this list of people that have bought a Mini, but I would expect more to comment in this thread about their thoughts about buying one after MOS3.0 is released.

I doubt that we have heard from more than 50 members in this thread and I would also expect that if there are going to be 200 to 300 buyers of MOS3.0, we would have heard from more of them.

Maybe I am wrong about that and there really will be 200, 300, 500 users that will purchase MOS3.0.

A key question is whther the MorphOS release will conveniently set up a double-boot selector screen, or if it will only wipe out an OS X installation to make way for MorphOS.

On some (most ?) PPC Mac, there is a builtin graphical boot menu to select the boot volume and OS. I think it shows up when you press some apple key combo after a reset.

You hold down the Option key while booting and it should give the option to choose which partition you want to boot from.

Maybe once MorphOS is out for Mac Mini some of those people who are continually moaning (on places like amigaworld.net) about AOS4.1 being on hardware that's too slow/expensive might be swayed to try MorphOS instead?

Hello, this is my first post here, i was reading some months ago this forums about morphos for macminis ppc.

I have a macmini from the first ones (originally with panther and ridiculous 256mb) without any use just waiting for mos.

Theres so many people waiting for it but we need more news or some info, is really usefull for the patience of the future users, well thats only my opinion.

About the multiple boot on the macmini ppc this can be usefull http://yaboot.ozlabs.org/

The only problem is to get the OF boot menu to actually load a MorphOS boot.img and I have some doubts that'll be easy to do.

    @kickstart,

If you know anything about our community, you know that we must be patient, or we would all have moved on to something else by now. The developers don't owe us any new info, unless they want to share it with us.

Like they have said many times "it will be done, when it is done" and no amount of whining or complaining by users will change that.

So, upgrade your Mini to 1gb RAM and play around with Panther, or Tiger some more while you are waiting (patiently) for MorphOS3.0 to be officially released just like the rest of us.

    @Velcro,

I am not a beta tester (wish I was), but I hope that the MorphOS dev team can utilize the Option Key boot selector that is already built into the MacMini's Open Firmware that will allow us to just pick which partition we want to boot from, but that is probably wishful thinking, as it is very unlikely that OF will see a MorphOS partition formatted with SFS, but I can still hope for it.

Maybe the Yaboot from OzLabs.org will be a good alternative.

That would require logic and rational thinking being part of the decision making, but as we have seen over the years, that's not always the case there. You might think that people easily would favor the option that...

    + has better Amiga compatibility
    + is faster
+ has a desktop light years ahead of the old Workbench, partly with dopus magellan funcionality
+ has MUI4 and uses it for everything, both the desktop and most of the applications (most Amiga applications uses MUI as well), which gives a beautiful, clean and consistent user experience to the whole system and opens up for some nice customization possibilities
+ has USB2 and *all the other* benefits coming from Poseidon, that is *integrated* in the OS
+ has a better printing system
+ has a shell that is vastly more advanced and usable
+ has much better file type handling
+ has a much more advanced hotkey system
    + etc
    + etc
+ is completely free to download and try
    + etc

...but as you may know, this is not always the case.

MorphOS was here first and has been developed the longest, it got the best Amiga standards tied to it (os4 got what was left over), as well as developers, hence it has the best features and functionality. But "its not teh rael!1!1!!", it's as simple as that. And one might think that the fact that the Amiga IP owners themselves claims OS4 not being "the real" either, and can't use the Amiga trademark, must either surrender the source code or cease and desist, would be confusing to these people. But no, rationality has nothing to do with it. They simply build yet another layer to their isolation/insulation wall, turn up the volume on the stereo a few more notches, so they can't hear the real world.

So instead of buying one of the most powerful and low cost G4 hardware ever released to consumers, they choose to spend 3x the money on a "G2" system, a motherboard that has a still-born appendix called "Lattice XP" whose only function is expensive dead weight, only to be able to run an beta-level OS that is inferior to MorphOS in every single way of measurement (except perhaps the cardboard box with a boing ball on (yes I know, not really a feature, but Hyperion still listed it as such! ;-))). And then quite a few of them even has the nerve to sit up on their high horses and look down on the alternatives as inferior, irrelevant infidels or whatever, which is what really makes the joke complete and so f***ing hilarious!

I think some people on amiga.org will buy it. They are a sensible bunch, although more into pure retro perhaps. Maybe a few from amigaworld.net. But on sites like amigans.net etc, they are simply way too off into lala-land to care for rational and measurable things like price, performance and features...

Maybe the problem is that MorphOS has moved too far beyond OS3.1 that these people can't take it and run screaming to AOS4 because it has moved on less?

I got back into Amiga stuff via buying a SAM440ep & AOS4.1 (feel free to call me a fool :) ). As I mentioned before I started reading forums and found out quite a bit about MorphOS on Amiga.org mainly from your posts there. So it is partly down to you (and the fact that MorphOS is indeed very good) that I am here. Whether that is a good thing or not I'll leave that upto you to decide :)

You're absolutely no fool for wanting to try out OS4, and I didn't say that. I bought an "AmigaOne" G4 a few years ago myself just to try out OS4 (I sold it a few months later). Curiosity is a good thing IMHO.

I merely gave my view on your hopes that unhappy people in the OS4 crowd would try out MorphOS on Mac Mini. Hopefully a great deal of them will. But then there will always be some people that simply *don't want* the most amiga compatible solution, they want OS4. They *don't want* the fastest solution, they want OS4. They *don't want* the features coming from Poseidon USB and MUI4, they want OS4. They *don't want* the most "amiga bang for the buck" solution, they want OS4. And these people *will never* try MorphOS on Mac Mini, *despite* it being the most feature rich OS alternative available on the most powerful hardware any amiga OS has *ever* run on, and *the only reason* they won't do it, is because it isn't OS4. And the only reason they want OS4 seems to be that it's OS4. And by all means, it's a free world and they can do whatever they like...

I know, I was just saying that I wouldn't mind if you did :-) because I feel a little foolish myself for spending a lot of money on something I hardly use.

Curiosity is indeed a great thing and has served humanity well over the centuries. Narrow mindedness and idolatary haven't. (Plenty of examples of that on other Amiga related forums).

    Exactly Ruud!

Why is the computing world so hung up on getting faster and faster CPU's when it is the OS and software that is the important part of the combination. If programmers were not so lazy and wrote more efficient code like they used to they would not need 3+ghz quad core cpu's and 2gb to 4gb of RAM.

I don't see why MorphOS ported to a dual 2.7ghz G5 PowerMac system would not be all I would need for the next 5 to 10 years IF we could get well coded applications that could do all the computing type things we need done, equivalent to what is available on Windows & Mac computers today. I mean now that we have reached display resolutions that are close to being as high as the human eye ever needs them to be, we should be able to start concentrating on other things besides how many pixels can be pushed around a screen.

If MorphOS could gradually be improved to take advantage of the added features of the G5 and then further improved to take advantage of the 64bit architecture in future versions, then the only drawback I can see for doing so would be the possible failure rate of the old systems and lack of new replacement parts.

It is almost (but not actually) like the hardware manufacturers are paying the software programmers to write bad code that requires more resources, just to force us all into buying new computers every 2 to 3 years. Just like car manufacturers began making less dependable cars several years ago, just so we would be forced into buying new cars every 4 to 6 years.

You're neglecting one thing here, pretty off-shore but serious though.

I must have said this here, MorphOS guys should advert the Mac MOS on the Apple software site. And this would be good then if ALL people downloaded MacMini version through this very location, thus popping the statistics, e.g. Most Popular or sth. (I'm not touching legal stuff here, but I don't think Apple thought about it... Mac PPC Linux and stuff... but a freeware though... Someone must check this finally).

Also, I am pretty sure, many Mac forums, portals, will want really to review MacMini MorphOS. See for many people with PPC Minis, having more recent Macs possibly, too, this would mean a fun to have a "some other os" on their MacMini Macs, especially as a DUAL BOOT as I did state as a must-be feature (consider this a reason).

Besides, Mac people are geek people per se, MorphOS seems a pinpoint in further discovering the computer world in a non-Bill-way.

MacMinis by retaining MorphOS become Amigas but.... I don't know how many realize here but... MorphOS becomes Mac then, you know what I mean...

Now: Amiga Forever 2010 with AmiKit and AmigaSYS
Not used: Icaros Desktop 1.2 (reason: no wifi)

    @DiskDoctor,

Everyone has there own opinion, and yours might be right, but I do not agree. I don't think many Mac users that have never heard of an Amiga, or MorphOS will be interested in trying MorphOS for the MacMini, UNLESS it is a free demo version that they can run from a CD which they can burn for themselves from a downloaded .iso image. Not something they have to install, but a Live CD they can run MorphOS from.

Even if many do decide to try MorphOS out that way, only the tiniest fraction of those that bother looking at MorphOS will ever purchase it, or use it because there is so little software available that runs native on the G4 PPC through MorphOS. We might get a few Mac users to come back IF they used to be Amiga users before, but quit after Commodore/Escom/Gateway gave up on continuing Amiga development.

We need more "Killer" applications and games written just for MorphOS, or at least many more ports of applications and games from the Windows and Mac and Linux worlds. Without software a computer and it's OS are just a waste of electrical energy (that is why I am trying to improve my own programming skills and write MorphOS apps & games).

When/If MorphOS is released for the MacMini, I hope it has support for wireless networking via the MacMini's airport card and that the bluetooth also works, but that may be too much to ask for at its initial release

Making the OS supporting things like firewire, WiFi and bluetooth requires a lot more than simply writing a driver for the controller, you will also have to write support software/stacks etc that makes it usable, and each of those will be kind of a big project. Compare it to MorphOS pre-2.0, it had drivers for two network controllers since very early releases if I recall correctly, that provided an interface to the networking hardware, but still nobody could hook up their pegs to the net without using a 68k amiga netstack (like amitcp or miami). And there are lots of things to be done in order to make MorphOS support wifi and bluetooth in a usable way, but I agree with you that it is a thing someone should put effort into. Nothing I count on for the initial Mac Mini release though...
