Yeah, I guess that's why Mikey_C and his bunch started their "exodus" to amigaworld.net ;-)

A proper agreement would have led to only *one* OS coming to fruition, going by the name of AmigaOS 4 and consisting (mainly) of what became known as MorphOS.

My mini arrived two days ago, it's a 1.42GHz, 256MB, 80GB HDD with no Bluetooth, Airport or Superdrive, but it's still a sexy little beast :-)

Can't wait for MorphOS! Bring it in ;)

    Nice :-)
I wouldn't worry that your mini hasn't got Bluetooth or Airport but you might want to get the RAM upgraded a little.

Sorry for triple post :( WTF...

    @Ruud

I already bought 512MB module, should arrive in the next few days. I already tried another 512MB (which turned out to be defective - failed Apple memory test from OS X Install CD) and 1GB module, which didn't work at all - Mac just stopped at startup and made a lot of noise :>

Yes, but will it still remain that way for the MacMini? I hope so, as it will attract many more people to give it a try that otherwise would not bother and risk messing up their MacOSX installation.

Unlike the DiskDoctor, I do not agree that most Mac users like to experiment with their computers.

You are right. What I would not underestimate is the number of "educated" (read: not just keen on Amiga 500 gaming) ex-Amiga users that passed to Mac in the late nineties or in the 21st century. I do not want to indicate millions of users or hundred of thousands... but a few hundreds that might be curious are a realistic bet.
I still don't have a Mini, but I am definitely following with great interest, BTW.

    Kind regards,
    Andrea

Very good point, and I guess the DiskDoctor's desire to advertise on Mac specific sites might inform a few of those potential hundreds of users about the release of MorphOS3.0 for the MacMini.

I am all for getting more MorphOS users and hopefully a few developers that have left the Amiga scene, to come back and begin coding applications for MorphOS3.0 and beyond.

I personally think that the port to the MacMini will be the single greatest event to happen in the MorphOS community since its inception. The immediate availability of relatively low cost hardware that was produced in huge numbers, could be a fantastic thing to boost activity and the number of users of MorphOS.

I got a Mac Mini PPC to run MorphOS 3 on it.

It just arrived and you can see it on photo with Efika and PowerMac G4.

So you can put me on the list!

I don't want to add a negative tone here but does the Morph Team have an agreement with Apple for the MorphOS release for Apple Mac PPC Hardware? Apple is very territorial and may opt for legal intervention. Apple can't say anything about Open Source software but MorphOS is a commercial OS . . .

I am sure that is a concern that may need to be addressed, but I am also sure that there is a way around the problem and pretty sure that Apple does not much care what is running on their old PPC hardware. MorphOS3.0 is hardly a threat to MacOSX now, and is not likely to ever be a serious threat in the future.

I may be wrong, but you can run any os on any hardware, if you care not about voiding any upgrades or warranties. In this case ppc is abandoned by apple, but even if it wasn't Morphos being developed for their hw wouldn't be a threat to their bottom line (unless it was better....Uuumm). But seriously no one can block an os which may run on a hardware from consumers who would willingly purchase it. Next step my be ps3. :-o
    it is a point though

Shortly after that, Piru revealed that he just made up this version number. Later on, pega-1 told that Mac mini support would probably come with MorphOS 2.4.

Pure bollocks. There's nothing a hardware vendor can do against other parties developing an OS for it other than trying to be obscure about the components and holding back the corresponding documentation.

    Piru made up nothing.
I was explained 3.x is the current development branch while 2.x is the currently released version.

    Any URL?
If you refer to his post on the MorphOS ML, he just explained Mac support would not be in 2.3 but would come in some later version. Nothing about "2.4".

Any URL? I recall him saying that he chose "3.0" for the moment just because and that it wouldn't mean Mac mini support would really come with MorphOS 3.0.

    > Any URL?

Yes, of course (translation from German, original dating May 9th):

"It currently looks like 2.3 will become just a bugfix release for Pegasos/Efika and MacMini support will come in 2.4 (as announced previously)."

Especially note "as announced previously". And as you can see here (German), I already knew about that April 16th. So the original announcement must predate even that (though I cannot find it at the moment).

    > If you refer to his post on the MorphOS ML

    I don't.

Well, I have read, and I believe that if Apple really wanted to make trouble for the MorphOS Dev Team, they probably could, because the port of MorphOS is being targeted directly at a specific piece of Apple hardware and is not a generic Linux kernal that runs on hundreds of different hardware. I think Apple also has made some kind of attempt to limit other commercial OSes, unless Apple has written the software that allows them to boot into the alternate OS, such as Boot Camp does with Windows.

But I am not an expert on the subject and don't wish to do the research to become one, so if you have other information about this subject that seems reasonable to me, I would easily change my mind about it. I was just commenting on what you had written based on information I had previously read from someone else, not first hand knowledge, but it seemed reasonable to me that Apple might not like it if someone else were making a profit based on a product that competes with their OS on their own hardware, even though the threat is so tiny.

Its quite easy to boot other OS's on the mini, and other PPC Macs. If you have one try holding command, option O and F all at the same time while turning on the machine. In a few seconds you will be at the open firmware prompt. It looks a lot like the one in the Peg.

I've even booted the Amiga OS 4.0 disk with it. It gets pretty far too.
