MorphOS 2.0 Status

    Hi All,

I am new to the MorphOS world. Sorry if I come across as an annoying newbie. But, I have become very excited about amiga for the first time in a while since reading all about MorphOS 2.0. I am really interested in buying an Efika board and running 2.0 on it.

I cannot seem to find any discussion or announcements about actual status or any guestimated ETAs. Anyone got anything like that?

    Thanks!

    Dave

Mkay... "Will probably not run on Amigas with PPC accelerators" seems to be your words, or maybe I'm missing something? :)

No, Golem, you're not missing anything, it's jmarcos that probably
missed jacaDcaps answer on page 1 of this very thread, that clarified
a bit the situation of MOS 2.0 on PUP systems. It's not clear/sure if
MOS 2.0 will get released for classic Amigas, it depends also on the
relevant HW being in working conditions for the guys in the MOS-team
that still own it, and Jacek simply implied that MOS 2.0 won't be
sold for the classics. If it is released, it won't be a boxed release,
but something similar to the 1.4.x release.

But saying that probably it won't run on PPC accelerators is something
    Jacek never did.

    Kind regards,
    Andrea

And how exactly "sound support" is supposed to be a new feature? :)

maybe he means sound support in efika, as seen in the scenecon video
'Even there is sound, despite they are still working on it'

Seeing that you've popped in this thread, might I dare to ask... What are the chances for MorphOS 2.0 on the old Pegasos I? The same as for PowerUP Amigas?

Pegasos I is supported as much as Pegasos II. Why do you think it would have a different status (for information, mos team is not responsible for firmwares upgrades, if that's what you refer to))?

Understood. Now, daring to upset you, could you define that support? I mean chances for MorphOS 2.0 on each possible platform.

I guess I supposed that all MorphOS 2.0 developers were using Pegasos II only.

Understood. Is my assumption true, that MorphOS does not use all existing firmware functions, but own functions instead, so it's more hardware dependant but less firmware dependant?

    @jcmarcos

    please stop making assumptions ;-)

MOS2.0 will support PegasosI, PegasosII and Efika. That means that it will be released, will support most of its hardware and you'll be able to join the morphos-mailinglist and download updates from the MOS FTP.

MOS2.0 may be released for classics too, but probably later and just like the previous version *without support*. that means you won't have access to the MOS FTP and won't be able to join the mailing list.

    MOS developers also own PegasosI.

Fab comment about firmware was because you may think that as bPlan doesn't release firmware updates for Peg1 (although BBRV wrote that an update may appear in the future if the developers have time for it), PegasosI may be unsupported by MOS: That's a total mistake, the MOS Team is free to support whatever they want.

MOS uses a HAL and doesn't hit the hardware directly.

But that's all a regular user can do.

For sure, MorphOS 1.4.5 does work very well in PowerUP Amigas, where there's no OpenFirmware at all.
So, to what extent does MorphOS not depend on OpenFirmware? Does this mean that it just needs a certain hardware and a boot loader?

Just curious, what are the hardware requirements for 3D layers? Mostly the gfx card, I guess.

Wouldn't be surprised, if it required more memory than f.ex. Voodoo 3 has for comfortable use.

In any case, if someone still has such ancient gfx card, I think it might be a good idea to get a supported Radeon board in advance (before they become even harder to get) :-)

A Radeon with at least 64mb mem. Voodoo and others are unlikely to ever be supported (at least when it comes to hw acceleration).

So, MorphOS 2.0 has both 3D and regular layers? If so, do they wotk at the same time?

    @jcmarcos

take a look at the main page and check out Chain-Q MOS presentation.

The new 3D layers use the 3D card to speed up the process. Why on earth would you want to have working two layers.library simultaneusly? If you don't like transparency you will probably be able to turn it off but you will still have 3D acceleration.

Of course if your gfx card is a weak voodoo3 or a radeon with not enough ram you'll probably be forced to use the normal 2D layers.

I read some time ago (IIRC on PPA) it would be rather a licence per user.

Nice. Does it require a network connection, or is it possible to obtain a license key offline?

Hi. Does this mean that If you own a Peg and an Efika you need to purchase 2 copies of MOS 2.0?

Also, when is there going to be some kind of feature set or release information please?

No, offline registration will not be possible. The system is close to what we offered for MorphOS PowerUP Edition.
