I hate to keep harping on this, but I strongly disagree with this statement.

Promoting MorphOS does not need to wait for PowerBook support, but promotion can be increased, once 3.0 is released.

What do you suggest, a banner at all amigaforums, an add in Amiga Future-magazine? We certainly can't promote in forum threads as that labels us as blue trolls. And I'm only half joking.

The numerical data must be in the graph itself, but I don't know what format the graph is in, or which program was used to create it, so if I could just download the spreadsheet that the graph was made with and look at it, that is all I want. Unless the graph was made with a different program, instead of a spreadsheet program like Excel, or something else.

Can the creator of the graph make it available for download to the rest of us, or email it to me?

An add in Amiga Future might be a litle test, shouldn't be too costy, but also n ot too far reaching. And while I knoe about MorphOS shortcomings I also know that it actually has strengthes and nice features. For testing teh OS getting appropriate hardwrae is probably teh bigest obstacle. Hence, to reach most ppl that may test you must approach those who have the hardwre already. Try to get featured in a Mac magazine as an alternative for old and not any longer supported hardware. And advert there should be considered as well IMHO.
It is important though how to promote it. MorphOS is not a competitor to OS X, hence ppl will not need to bash it. But it could revive abandoned old hardware. I think it would be worth teh attempt.

And about shortcoming of MorphSo and seriousness to market teh OS. I never forget that ASUS sold the Eee with a übercrappy Linux distribution that was unstable as hell and really sucked hard. It was c r a p! But they sold it. Sold many units. If you can sell crap, you can also sell an OS with some shortcomings but also nice features/ideas. Not every product mt be teh best in every regard to be able to get sold. Don't underestimate and belittle MorphOS. Also don't oversetimate it though.

Exactly. And what would possibly be better timing than after the release of a new version of MorphOS. I can even chip in for the add-cost.

Hmm... I guess he could... Give him some time :)

The graph was made in OpenOffice, but the vertical lines, text labels and green "lowered price" areas were all added in a gfx editing program.

    @ Zylesea

The thing is that Linux does not cost much. MOS costs much. And there are no new computers to sell MOS with. Too much for anyone to play around with it just occasionally. So how to spread it like the ASUS way? Even if you just would install the non registered version. On which machines would you do so? Who should buy a hardware for which he has to extra pay for the software? This model never worked. This is why Windows is everywhere.

    @koszer

Regarding the graph: Why do you use an alien program? There are many programs on Amiga/MorphOS which could be used for this task: enter data and get out a graph. Spreadsheet programs, there also was a MUI test MCC for this purpose which you could fill in data via texteditor lines etc. Would make sense to use Amiga programs for this task, don't you think? At least in this respect we HAVE the necessary software. In many others we have not.

BTW: all these posts in this thread not belonging to the number of registrations should be moved to a new thread. Maybe a moderator can do so.

i am one of those users. its been almost 2 years since i sold my morphos system and the reason was so simple.

    1. Peg2 is underpowered
    2. no printing drivers
    3. no flash support
    4. no office

so my question is? why are you developers so focused on porting the system to every type of mac system instead of investing your energy for a while into those so badly needed software products?
MorphOS is already running on a lot of systems. it wouldnt hurt to make a pause.
you are porting the operating system to so many hardware platforms but its lacking essencial software.
MorphOS doesnt need killer applications, just the everyday life applications. MorphOS does already have the killer feature and that since day one. And that is speed. You dont have that on other systems. and in my opinion the reason why morphos isnt that well spreaded, is the fact that there is basic software lacking.
i would buy a morphos system again, when i could do all my work on those machines.

so what is the sense behind developing and marketing a system? of course it'll take time! but there hasnt been any progress since 2.0 came out. 4 years and still no office or printing system.
there hasn't been any new software for existing users. they are literally left behind with a running system on their hardware but no software to use it. ppl are saying it'll take time, but still after all these years i would still be forced to use the restricted software base i had years ago when morphos came out.
OS4 developers ported Firefox and it took time. they are working on OpenOffice and it is taking time. As long as there is no intention to supply the users with essencial software it will stay like this forever. no expanding userbase and no suitability for daily use. and that means the only progress that is happening with morphos is porting the system with its restrictions to other platforms, with no extra use.

    You're hard.

There is at least two mainstream applications : MPlayer & OWB.

And not the lesser one : a modern video player that play most if any video format out there and a full featured web browser even beating FF with various HTML5 benchmark tools...

Also, OWB is the only browser that can play youtube video without relying on overpriced hardware and buggy software... (Read TW beta + X1000).

You can't say nothing has been done since 4 years.

Tons of bug fix. Tons of features. Refined tools & utilities. That's not nothing. For a complete list : http://www.morphos.de/releasenotes-2.0.html

Next release will include numerous new tools, utilities & application. Some of them has already been officialy announced.

Also, MorphOS team hasn't exactly taken the path of OS4 regarding system components : OS4 choosed to use .so (aka shared object) to help porting alien application like TW & others. This choice certainly reduced the time needed to port stuff...

MorphOS tries to keep the real spirit of AmigaOS : clean, fast, small & user friendly. Those goals aren't really achievable with .so...

For example, all alien libraries are true amiga libraries (.library) and not alien .so files. It takes time to port correctly stuff inside a so fragile system.

Also, MorphOS features an unique multimedia framework : Reggae. Worth billions trust me from the developper point of view. Playing a sound in less then 10 lines of code with worring about next to nothing (file format, decoding, sound devices, whatever) is a top feature.

Sure this is a low system component but it will show all its power at a later stage...

Well. Enough. Keep in mind : MorphOS is a toy. Enjoy its strength & weakness.

as long as it keeps beeing a toy, it won't be suitable for me or any other normal user who wants to use his computer as a everyday tool.
i'm not into developing and it wasnt the point to compare it with os4. my point is that there is absolutely no sign, no light at the end that there will be a change in that matter. and its been like that for the last years.

For 2.5 years you can run MorphOS on 1.5 GHz G4 machines if you want to. For 1.5 years you can run MorphOS on 2.0 GHz G4 machines if you want to.

    > 2. no printing drivers

Use a PostScript printer. They have been available for way longer than 2 years.

    > 3. no flash support

I know this was not so obvious 2 years ago, but now it's clear that Flash is in the process of being killed by HTML5, also thanks to the popularity of Apple's mobile devices.

    > 4. no office

True, that's a valid concern still today, at least for those who don't want to rely on web applications for this.

    > why are you developers so focused on porting the system to every type

I guess one of their reasons might be to be able to offer hardware platforms that are faster than the "underpowered" (as you called it) Peg2 :-P

like i said, these were the reasons why i sold my peg2 back then. yes there are more powerful systems out today, but there hasnt been any change on the other things i said. and it makes no sense to keep porting the system on and on. it is becoming more and more like aros in my opinion.
Postscript printers are very expensive and in fact my printer right now is not a postscript printer, so that is not an alternative for me.

Back in 2010 ppl were already saying that flash is dying, but it is still out there.

I have seen Postscript compatible printers that cost about $200. And I believe some of the members have managed to get online productivity software working under OWB.

Not only today, but starting 2.5 years ago (i.e. even before you sold your Peg2), like I said.

    > Postscript printers are very expensive

MFPs with PS starting at 144 EUR:
    http://www.heise.de/preisvergleich/eu/?cat=multi&xf=388_PS%203&sort=p#xf_top

B/W laser printers with PS start at about 100 EUR, colour laser printers at about 220 EUR. So I guess "very expensive" is very relative then :-)

    > my printer right now is not a postscript printer, so that is not an
    > alternative for me.

With niche operating systems you've always had to carefully choose your peripherals. I don't see why printers would be an exception to this. If you made the wrong choice, then guess who's the one to blame for that.

    > Back in 2010 ppl were already saying that flash is dying, but it
    > is still out there.

Back in the 1990s, people were already saying that the Amiga* is dying, but it is still out there. See the pattern? ;-)
For me, everyday web browsing on MorphOS has become really easy thanks to OWB, even without (proper) Flash support, especially with a browser that can spoof as a mobile Apple device.

    * "Amiga" meant in a broader sense here, i.e. including MorphOS/AROS/etc.
