Software : : Folio (Proof-of-Concept Demo)

Folio is a technical proof of concept that leverages the sophisticated Webkit layout engine included in the Odyssey Web Browser to provide a modern word processing tool that fulfills most common needs. Its current feature set and capabilities are comparable to those found in Microsoft WordPad and Apple TextEdit.

Features:
  • Folio saves self-contained documents (including images) that can be opened and edited with Libre Office, and various other office suites. They can also be viewed with any reasonably modern web browser on any platform.
  • Unlike cloud-only editors, Folio does not require to submit data to the internet to work, thereby ensuring that your personal information stays safe and is only shared with other computers when you choose to do so.
  • It requires no internet / network connection to work at all.

Known quirks:

  • Saving files opens a blank window hiding the editor, which needs to be closed manually.
  • File names need to be entered inside the MorphOS file requester every time you save a document regardless of whether you previously entered a file name or not.
  • Dragging images around inside the document can duplicate images. For moving around images, it is recommended to cut out images and then paste them after you position the text cursor via mouse or keyboard.
  • When you use the "pop up" button in the toolbar to run Folio in its own window, you will still see a tab bar even though it is technically redundant.

Most or all of these could be addressed given sufficient interest.

Very important: Due to an unfortunate issue with OWB v1.24, Folio specifically requires that you also install a local copy of version 1.23 of Odyssey. You can download it here: Odyssey v1.23

If you are interested in word processing, please do not hesitate to give Folio a try and compare it to other available options in terms of performance and functionality.

    @ GMKai

Thanks. The second Folio link was broken, indeed.

The program looks good! I've played with it a little and it seems the tables have some issues (Could not resize the damned thing properly) and the saved file has very strange, long name. But it loads into program flawlessly.

That is listed as one of the known quirks. When the MorphOS file requester opens, you always have to enter the name. The modal window that appears before technically takes your input and adds a file extension automatically, but Odyssey ignores the file name that you pass along to the file requetser. According to Fab, that seems to have been a simple oversight during the browser development.

First impression after playing a little bit around: pretty nice.
If a .dox and/or .docx import/export can get added then this would fill quite a void. The limited functionality is good enough for many tasks.

Well done and quite a demo of what can get achieved with current web techniques.

I'd say this proof of concept gets a pretty solid "go on with it"!

    @ all

Thanks for the feedback so far.

    @ jPV

There exist special print CSS rules to prevent this from happening. This could well be a browser bug. Will need to investigate this part more thoroughly but I currently lack compatible printing hardware. (It works on other platforms, at least.)
