Software : : Folio v1 - Public Beta
Posted By: ASiegel. on 2017/8/21 10:14:42
A new version of the Folio word processor has been released. It contains numerous improvements and new features. Please note that this version is likely to still have issues. Please do not hesitate to test and report your findings in the comments.

Folio v1 - Public Beta

The following list includes various changes that were applied since the earlier basic technology demo was released:

  • Full support for Odyssey Web Browser v1.24. Folio no longer requres v1.23 to run.
  • Automatic detection and integration of locally installed fonts (including filtering of unsupported ones).
  • New User Interface Settings to enable users to adapt the application look so it can be made to fit seamlessly into anyone's personalized OS environment.
  • New ability to save a 'native' file format, which adds various application-specific properties but remains compliant with the HTML standard, thereby retaining full cross-platform compatibility.
  • 'Focus Mode' to hide the application user interface during writing sessions via toolbar or repeatedly pressing F2. (Useful to remove distractions and to increase the visible content in smaller screen resolutions.)
  • New per-document settings.
  • New ability to scale down and up the document content. Note: Zooming in does degrade performance.
  • New ability to alter line heights. (Useful for moving text to the right place on a page.)
  • New ability to alter letter spacing.
  • Improved printing & PDF export: Application UI should be hidden while exporting to PDF or printing via Odyssey Web Browser.
  • New HTML and MHT file export options for improved interoperability with all common office suites.
  • New (very) simple RTF file export.
  • New plain text file export.
  • New ability to directly run Folio from shell.
  • New ability to load valid Folio documents directly from shell: folio yourdrive:yourfolder/yourfile.folio
  • New Ambient Folio file type. (Folio checks for its presence and installs it if needed.)
  • New Ambient Folio document icon. (Folio checks for its presence and installs it if needed.)
  • New program icon.

More information can be found in the included "Readme" file.

How do you get an image to be loaded to one side or somewhere specifically on a page, without it affecting/compromising text wrap around the image?

I can put an image on a page, either left or right side of the page, but it always seems to affect the positioning of the text to the bottom of the image with a text cursor flashing as large/tall as the image height.
It's a great new way to create documents on MorphOS - nice work André :bloons:

Would you mind providing a screenshot? I am not entirely sure what you might be referring to.

If you have a long block of text, try to select the very first line by clicking somewhere in it and then insert an image. Next, click on the image with your mouse and choose the "right align" button in the toolbar. The text should now flow around the image.

Is this what you are doing?

I'm not sure how I'd provide a screenshot, as the options to load an image on this site seem to require a URL, as there isn't a way to directly add an image into the text, which is what I'd prefer to do.

Anyway, I tried your instructions - "right align" and that worked OK, but most options like that usually refer to the text being right aligned, rather than an object or anything else that's highlighted on the page, but I can see the logic in it. ;-)

It's a pity, so far, that there aren't any more image tools, such as cropping, and direct, mouse driven re-sizing, but considering how recent Folio was released it is not surprising that there are a few features that have not been added, as yet.

As far as it goes, it's a brilliant idea, and I'm very encouraged by what you have achieved with such a small amount of code. 8-D

Oh! I just noticed as well, that when you press F2, once you've highlighted/clicked in the page/document, that the toolbar is hidden, BUT that when you press the F2 key again, the space that was above the 'page' and between the toolbar has been 'lost'/'removed'.

However, if you click on the 'eye' icon at the top right of the page when the toolbar is hidden, instead of pressing the F2 key, that when the toolbar re-appears the space between the page and the toolbar is re-instated, so maybe this is a small issue to fix?

When I've try to save text using mht format ( text contains polish symbols ) , and then open this mht file in MS Word, there are no polish letters but garbage .
But when I edit file and put between <head> </head> - this string - <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-2" /> , then in eg. MS Word I can see polish letters. Maybe you should fix this ? :)

First of all, which version of Word is this? Also, did you try HTML export and Libre/OpenOffice as well? Did you have the same issue?

At the very least, Microsoft WordPad and Libre/OpenOffice work more or less the same. (LO/OO just offer additional image placement options.)

That said, the image edit window should feature these and any additional layout options.

Cropping, rotation, etc. are disabled at the moment due to some initial issues with Odyssey v1.24 but they are likely to be enabled in the near future.

Mouse-driven resizing is a a bit trickier to pull off (without side-effects or undesired behaviour).

As stated in the include readme document, the objective has been to create a basic word processor similar to Microsoft WordPad or Apple TextEdit.

If I receive feedback expressing a need for additional features, I will certainly investigate the possibility but I do not have a long list of things to add on my own.

I do not use OpenOffice/LibreOffice. I use MS office 365 ( ver. 15.37 macOS Sierra ) or MS Office 2004 ( MacOS PPC ), and in both cases i've got the same issue :) :) .

I've checked LibreOffice 5.4.0.3 (macOS Sierra ) and everything seems to be all right . There was no issues with polish letters , so probably MS Word is .. well ... "weird" ;) .

This is quite nice and pretty useful.
Some more features like image cropping or so would be useful and welcome, but it's not a big hassle to crop with an external progam like showgirls.

The ancient Amiga wordprocessors are probably still more advanced, but they are unstable (most prominent: AmigaWriter) or just offer no compability (Wordsworth or FW) and are just not available (maybe FW comes one day, but...). Folio comes in here really handy and is highly appreciated. Enough for simple tasks - a few machine switches avoided.

    Good job, André!

Good program to write document files, only I need the option to export to PDF document and the program will be 300% fantastic.

Have you tried exporting via the PDF export feature that is built natively into Odyssey Web Browser? (You need to use the top screen menu to access it.)

Based on my tests, this worked like a charm. If you find any issues with this, please share them.

Thank you, for the idea, I don't think about OWB and the PDF save option.

Yes, tested and it works fine, I'll make some doc with it.

I will add a more convenient and robust way to handle this in the next release, but for the time being click inside a table, then click on the table icon in the toolbar and choose "table properties". Next, type in "1" in the "Border" input field, switch to the "Advanced" tab and choose white as the border color (either use the color picker or enter "#fff" by hand).

Downloaded.... but when I type text and then highlight, then change the font style, the font doesnt change.

    EDIT: nevermind..works now. Weird.

    EDIT 2:
This is very creative. Using the framework of Webkit to create a quick little text editor. Very very cool. Can you add more fonts? Or does it use system fonts? Now that you have created this, time to add more features :-)

LOL! Ok ok..so I didnt read it. Me wonders what fonts it does support though. I guess I can download fonts in to MorphOS to see.

It supports pretty much any TrueType fonts that are properly (!) installed, i.e. via FTManager. Just copying over the TTF files to the "ttf" directory in SYS:Fonts is not enough.

The "unsupported" fonts mentioned in the announcement refer to fonts with exceptionally long and verbose names, which are not being loaded by Odyssey due to a restrictive font configuration (example: "My Super Fancy Font Semibold Italic").

If your font is installed with a name like "Myfont Serif", it should likely work just fine.

I wasn't expeting an usable word processor on MorphOS, but I got one! ;-) Works really well so far! Spell checking (ideally check-as-you-type) would be very good as an additional feature, but I guess this is up to OWB then? Somme bubble help would be nice too.

Pleased to hear that! Then the only thing left I would need is LibreOffice to properly support .mht files. ;-)

LibreOffice loads and saves HTML files just fine. As does Folio. (MHT is just for older Microsoft releases.)

I know it's a slightly older format, but is RTF (Rich Text Format) with UTF-8 import and export/saving support likely to be supported with a future version of Folio?

I know simple RTF is supported as an exported file, but why isn't it supported as an Imported/Loaded file as well, as that seems a little unusual to not allow it to be loaded, but it is allowed to be save din RTF format?

Hi guys, I'm having a little trouble using Folio in french.
In French we use a lot the ' caracter and when I save a text with this character, Folio inserts automatically a \ .

as you can see, this piece of text was saved 3 times

Original text : C'était l'année de ses seize ans
after saving 1 time : C\'était l\'année de ses seize ans
after saving 2 times : C\\'était l\\'année de ses seize ans
after saving 3 times : C\\\'était l\\\'année de ses seize ans

Do you have this issue to?
    An idea to solve it?

    Thks

Have you managed to recover your source code for your release of Folio so far, or has that code been lost forever?

Unfortunatly, it works no more with last OWB releases.

It was the only one handling properly my novels under morphos.

I just realised, due to the limitations of OWB v1.25 thesedays that if you spoof as another browser, such as Internet Explorer 8, 10 or 11, then some/many of the icons for Folio are blanked out.

This does not happen when 'Spoofing' as Safari 10.0.3, Opera, Chrome 56, iPhone, iPad, not even with Windows Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 6, Firefox 51, or Firefox 3.6 as each retains all the nice icons that are shown when Odyssey is used as the default browser.

Anyone else spotted this anomaly already?
