MorphOS : : Public Release of MorphOS 2.5 & Introduction of eMac Support
Posted By: ASiegel. on 2010/6/3 23:01:15

The MorphOS development team is proud to announce the public release of MorphOS 2.5, the fifth new OS version since the debut of MorphOS 2.0 in the same month two years ago. MorphOS 2.5 finally adds the Apple eMac to its list of officially supported platforms. In addition to the extended hardware support, existing users will benefit from various bug fixes and a few new features. For an overview of the included changes, please read our release notes.

We strongly urge owners of eMac computers to carefully read our installation and troubleshoot guides before they attempt to install MorphOS for the first time. Existing users can upgrade via the familiar procedure but are encouraged to read the guides as well. MorphOS 2.5 is available for download in our files section.

Very Cool. A new Mac model supported. And to think I almost bought one of these a few months ago. Of course, now that they're more useful, we might see the prices rise.

    Great news! Thanks guys.

Nah, I don't think MorphOS has *that* kind of impact on the global 2nd hand Mac HW prices? ;-)

Speaking of that, here are some eMac prices: LINK

    Really cheap! :-)

And MorphOS is for a limited time available for the much lower 111.11 EUR (incl 19% VAT) campaign price to celebrate the upcoming 2-year anniversary for MorphOS 2! :-)

Great news! Unfortunately I am leaving in about an hour for an extended weekennd. Will get back to my Mac mini and Efika on wednesday or so. But nice to know that I will have something nice waiting for me when returning.
Also the 111 EUR price makes me considering of obtaining my 3rd license (for my good old fellow, the Pegasos1).
How long does this price last?

Very impressive list of enhancements, really makes one be aware of the huge amount of work that's ongoing, while complaining about the Teams's silence! Your hard work is noticed, and apprecieted. The only problem is that we always want more!

Top class, as always. What a cool operating system, for these days when operating systems almost pass unnoticed.

    Very good news :-)

    Just wondering!

I have a MacMini 1.42Ghz, 1GB. Works like a charm an looking forward to the upgrade from 2.4.

Would there be any benefit in switching to a eMac?

As far as I can see so far the specs for the eMac's are more or less the same as the MacMini unless you get the G5, 1.42, 2GB combination that is'nt supported.

    Just wondering.

    @JohnFante:
There are no advantages, considering 3D acceleration is not even supported (yet?) on the faster eMac. It's not intended as an upgrade path for existing users, it's just an additional machine which can now run MorphOS.

Only if the Mac mini's max RAM of 1 GiB isn't enough for your needs.

    > the G5, 1.42, 2GB combination

There's no G5 eMac. And 2 GiB RAM is also possible with the explicitely supported G4 1.25 GHz eMac variant.

Great news! Nice new features (low memory print, software volume mixer, graphicsmemory.sbar etc.), can't wait to try it out!

Has anyone tried the low memory print features on an EFIKA? Does it support/affect 256MB Radeons?

Actually it should be xpkLZM2.library, and that's why I missed the issue (just 2 char difference). It's my mistake, nevertheless. :-)

I fixed it for the html releasenotes file. Obviously the releasenotes on the 2.5 ISO image will contain this mistake forever.

    @analogkid:
256MB Radeon support (or more, the lack of) is not related to "Low memory footprint" option. In fact, it doesn't reduce video memory usage, but main memory usage when huge bitmaps are loaded to the Radeon. Which means highly reduced main memory usage on the Efika, while running compositing. Especially on larger screens.

For example, my system uses ~32MB RAM with low memory footprint off after boot on the Efika, and only ~20MB RAM with low memory footprint enabled. Quite a significant difference. And also, opening new screens and windows are a lot less main memory intense with this option, especially when Enhanced Layers are enabled. It basically helps you to get more out of the tiny RAM on the Efika. Note that you don't have to enable it on the Efika, it's enabled by default.

However, it shouldn't be enabled at all on systems with low video memory, like a Mac mini 32MB VRAM as it will cause havoc when the system runs out of VRAM.

Thanx MorphOS Team for adding a fix in MorphOS so Aladdin 4D installs with no problems with the installer. In earlier versions of MorphOS Aladdin 4D would have to be installed manually. It is much appreciated.

Because the contest took so long to wrap up we are not making a formal announcement until all the winners have their prizes in hand. We have already started notifying winners and started sending prizes. Bet you thought we would forget about it forever.

Great news all round. Thanks to everyone. Am now using it on my Mac mini.

Minor Suggestion: change the installation instructions.

With MorphOS set as my default boot partition, following the instruction to "hold C whilst booting" fails: the installation begins, but fails to boot since it is looking at the boot.img on the hard drive.
I suggest changing the instruction to "hold Alt during boot, then select the CD as the installation source".
Works every time for me, although may require testing on other configurations.

    Thanks again guys.

Since accounting sent him 116 Euro just yesterday or Friday that's a true statement. His post on aw.net is from May 20th and he did not know back then that he won MorphOS since the prize was not awarded yet

Thanks for clarification. So I guess the special MorphOS celebratory price as well as the Euro regression just came handy for you (about 75 USD or 35% less costs) ;-) How do you make sure he really buys a MorphOS license from the money you sent him?

We can't be sure but we did not want to make it hard or complicated for him to buy MorphOS. Sending him money via Paypal was the easiest way for him to buy MorphOS without headaches. He wants to develop a game for MorphOS so we believe he will use the money for the right purpose and buy his keyfile.

And not very insightful comments, I'd say. Regular computer (and that includes MacOS) users forgot about the fun and education factor. Pity for them.

I'd also say I'll care for them as much as they care for us. It's only fair.
