Sputnik Bounty canceled

After two years of what appears to be halted development, it is unlikely that the project will ever be finished. The author has confirmed that he has no plans to continue working on the existing Sputnik versions but may or may not release something based on a more recent Google Chrome engine in the future. As a result, the members of the Bounty Team at MorphZone.org and Pegasosforum.de have decided to close the current bounty project.

Everyone who donated to this bounty will be contacted in the next days and asked to move their donations to any other MorphOS bounty projects.
You can find an up-to-date list by visiting the following address:
    http://bounties.morph.zone/

Alternatively, Sputnik donors also have an opportunity to move funds to Power2People.
    http://www.power2people.org

The bounties, which are mostly targetted at AROS might also benefit MorphOS because of their open source nature (see Wi-Fi bounty, for example)

Of course refund is possible. Please note that there are fees associated with this that will have to be subtracted from the donated sum.

If you have donated and get no mail, or your address changed, please contact the bounty-team at:
    bounty-team@amigaclubhamburg.de

We would appreciate to hear back from you until July 1, 2010
Otherwise donations will be moved to the General Fund and possibly reassigned to other bounties at some point in the future.

Thank you very much for your past contributions and support.

Sorry to hear it, Sputnik was awesome there for a minute :-( It will be great to see what this gifted coder comes up with next!

I would argue that Sputnik was the first modern, 21st century internet capable browser usable on an Amiga-ish environment, and that is a very notable achievement.

A pioneering achievement, but quickly obsoleted in the wave of development that it inspired, just like the real Sputnik.

A program of great significance in the Amiga world - hope everyone remembers that.

Browsing around the MZ.org site I noticed that almost 2,000 dolars, or euros is still showing as the "Open" bounty for Sputnik.

It should show as canceled, per this thread, and I was wondering what, if anything has been done to see this money moved to another deserving development project that one or more software developers would like to take on, but might be hesitating without a monetary incentive.

You know me, always trying to promote new software development for MorphOS, so just thought I would check to see what is happening with this nice size chunk of money available to developers, if it can be transferred to another project.

I agree with everyone else that Sputnik was a significant step forward, when there were not many good choices available at the time when I first started using MorphOS. I also hope that the developer who was working on it finds some other software development project to work on for MorphOS in the future.

Edit: I would not object to having this money given to Fab for his excellent work on the Odyssey web browser, but that would be up to the rest of the people that donated.

    @ amigadave

I wonder if any of the following would be possible:

    1) HW accelerated Cairo
    2) JIT for JS
    3) A general MUI class in the OS that can be used to render HTML-content in any application using Odyssey's engine.

Those would be nice projects to funnel the bounty money to IMHO...

    :-)

I think the project with the best prospect to achieve that with a WebKit browser like OWB could be this:

I agree, give the money to Fab, but all the people that donated would have to agree also.

If it does not go to Fab, I would like to see something good happen with the money.

IIRC a mail was sent out to the donors when the bounty was cancelled, asking what you would like to do with the money. A refund, another bounty, etc.

The administrateRS of the bounty needs to make an executive decition, none of this waiting for emails crap. people put money in sputnik bounty for a webkit browser , they got a webkit browser with owb.

Didn't check yet if my money listed there is still in or was requested to be forwarded to another bounty - but if it is, I'm also supporting the idea to donate it to Fab.

    Thank you, Fab!

The bounty was to give MorphOS a modern browser.

Fab successfully acheive this. So the bounty is for him, if he want :)

Fab deserves the bounty, +1 for Fab.

I'd like to add that Fab is such a modest and dedicated person, that always refused donations and honors (besides being a class A bloke). One more reason to give him the bounty and force him to accept it.

I think his last post on this topic indicates that he will accept it if offered to him. He has definitely earned it and continues to make Odyssey the best browser available for MorphOS (as well as providing help for other people to port it to other system(s)).

Anyone involved with the bounty system needs to respond to this thread and let us know what is being done with the money and if it is possible to give it to Fab. Or perhaps some kind of poll for only people who donated needs to be set up and if not all want Fab to get the money, he could still get a portion of it depending on how many people who donated say they want their money to go to Fab.
