    Hello,

While reading wikipedia against MacOS emulation, I found Basilisk II software, that is stated do be built for Amiga also.

Imagine my impression when I found this on Aminet:

    http://aminet.net/search?query=basilisk

The build date is 12 Oct 2009 - same date as releasing 2.4 I suppose.

So my immediate questions since my wife took over Mac for a while:
    - is it 2.4-compliant?
    - did/does anybody use it? what apps is it good for for example?
Was: Mac Mini PPC running MorphOS 2.4
Now: Amiga Forever 2010 with AmiKit and AmigaSYS
Not used: Icaros Desktop 1.2 (reason: no wifi)
    Planned soon: an OS4 system
Shortly then: a MOS notebook (wifi is a must-have)

macos 8.x doesn't run on morphos bassilisk but 7.5.x does

    @zukow

    Thanks for clarifying that.

Can you point me to any web resource on it? There are multiple links on wikipedia, some are broken, not sure what I should be reading regarding MorphOS build. Thanks in advance.

And btw I guess I should get myself some MacOS7 CD or something, right?

same impressions here &: runs quite fast, useful for some apps. With Aaron you can even set the 7.x MacOS look like 8.x.

you could download legal system disks from this site:
    http://www.info.apple.com/Support/oldersoftwarelist.html
    or find some hardfile

and you have to obtain rom from mac (mac.rom 1mb version is better)

i didnt know that. can you know why?

i wonder why a ppc mac emu never released for morphos. even classic amiga had mac ppc emu (i know, fusion ppc wasnt the best). it would be really nice to run os9.2 in a window, not to mention os x.
is mac-on-linux cant be ported to morphos easily?

to stay on topic: where can one get those old mac 68k games? dark forces fe:)

You're one month off. Build date is September actually, i.e. one month before MorphOS 2.4 release. Basilisk II was first ported to MorphOS in 2005:

    https://morph.zone/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?topic_id=3461&forum=9

    > is it 2.4-compliant?

Counter question: Do you know any software that runs on 2.3 but not on 2.4? ;-)

    > did/does anybody use it? what apps is it good for for example?

Try feeding the MZ search engine with "basilisk" to find threads with answers to these questions :-)

For that I'd prefer to use the Stratagus engine, directly under MorphOS. Btw, I should check if the bug(s) I experienced with it are still there after transition from Pegasos to Mac mini. But they probably are.

    @zukow

I guess only 7.5 is supported because of the OS m64k compatibility - am I right? 7.6 was released on PPC macs as far as I read System 7 wikipedia entry.

    And roms btw...

Is there any legal way of obtaining rom file specified? I'm willing to pay of course. Because if not, I'm not going to play a butcher, get g'old Mac and rip its heart... I mean it's just no fun and I have no time for such toying myself. I use paypal and can pay for peculiar files. I'm not gonna get some elderly stuff having no price defined and operate it in some weird way. Alas I can pay Apple support to do this for me, I'll send them an email yet today :-)

So can you quote the HW spec in question?

Either some software is licenced as proprietary, or not. That would be kindda in the middle since OS 7 is free already...

    Thoughts?

EDIT* I've got a m68k HW listed here:

    http://lowendmac.com/early-macs.html

Which rom is fine for basilisk?

You read it wrong then. The first MacOS supporting PPC optionally was 7.1. The first MacOS requiring PPC was 8.5, the successor to 8.1. Consequently, Basilisk II normally can run up to MacOS 8.1:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilisk_II

I don't know why that's not true for the MorphOS port.

I didn't just "read wrong", I skimmed the text and saw PPC appears after 7.5.5. Then as you say, a coincidence.

What HW is the rom supposed to bi ripped off of? A fellow emailed me about IIc and Quadra. Anything else that fits?

I really intend to wiite the email to Apple :-)

The wikipedia entry has a link to an article which covers the basics.

The best ROMs to use are the 1MB ROMs from Macintosh Quadra computers. I have found that the 1MB ROM with the checksum "420DBFF3" from the Macintosh Quadra 900 does work well with Basilisk II.

    Huh?

"System 7.1.2 was the first version of the Mac OS to support Apple's new PowerPC-based computers."
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_7#Transition_to_PowerPC

"Apple [...] started work on PowerPC-based machines that later became the Power Macintosh family. Support for these machines resulted in System 7.1.2. System 7.1.2 [...] shipped with the first batches of the PowerPC Macs."
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_7#Version_history

    > Then as you say, a coincidence.

I didn't say anything like that.

Ok I meant coincidence that MacOS went PPC on 7.5, same as BasiliskII support. I was wrong since you quoted it had happend on 7.1 already.

But this is minor issue, I wrote an email to local Apple service company about the rom, I wonder what they would answer for me asking of Quanta 900 rom file purchase :-)

I had no idea that there was a Warcraft2 engine that would allow it to be played from MorphOS (unless I am misunderstanding your post regarding this topic) I will go look it up, not for myself as I have no desire to play any game that requires a monthly fee, but just for my own information that I can pass on to others that may be interested in trying MorphOS someday.

The Stratagus engine was first ported to MorphOS in April 2004 by Ali "oGALAXYo" Akcaagac. Refer to:

Yes, simply click the links in my posting that you quoted.

*Here* you are misunderstanding something for sure.
