Our recent bounty to raise money to get one of the core Amiga OS 4.1 developers a PS3 for experimental OS 4.1 porting was very successful. The funds were raised and exceeded in less than 24 hours. Would MorphOS users and developers be interested in us setting one up to get MorphOS Team members PS3 systems to experiment on porting MorphOS? Hate to see them left out.

Yeah, I have to agree.... I'd much rather donate funds for powerbooks, ibooks, mac minis, etc. My PS3 is for playing games (rarely) and BluRay's (all the time).

If a mac bounty is needed, you can all count me in as one of the first to donate.

I like this idea. But until RSX specifications still not public available, there is no 3D.

it's not just 3D acceleration that's missing, but graphics acceleration general. Which of course means that you can also count out for example proper video playback.

So, my answer is: "Not before at least the 3D hardaware is opened to public by Sony" (aka "Never")

Mac Mini & PowerBook / iBook idea is great however! :-)

Please, no more silly port-this-os-to-ps3 threads, it's a waste of time until someone cracks this useless "computer" wide open (doesn't look like there's much interest as progress is much farther along on f.ex. Xbox360 (though not much going on there either apart from drivehacks))...

If you want to donate hardware, atleast donate something useful, like a Wii or a Mac with plausable hardware configuration (G3/G4 and Radeon first and foremost).

    @CISC:

so you would say that a Wii would be a siutable target for porting MorphOS to it?
    Is it really that open?
What else beside the HW is needed to port MorphOS to the Wii?

    For PS3, nope.

If you must, make the bounty for something useful rather than the closed PS3 (and no, RJ will not be able to help with that).

Why not a bounty for SAM440 :) that way OS4.1 people could have a way to test out MOS :D

Thanks to Team Twiizers the Wii is cracked wide open and thus is the most probable candidate among the current-gen consoles for a MorphOS port. There are some limitations though that makes it a less-than-optimal choice, like f.ex. resolution (though it might be able to tweak it beyond 480p/576i no-one has thus far figured out how), USB (apparently limited to 1.1 even though it's listed as 2.0 by Nintendo (this could just be a setup issue though, so could still be resolved)) and storage; 2GB SD (4GB with some rare cards) and only 512MB builtin NAND...

You can play HDTV videos using the SPEs without problems. Examples:

3D Games running full screen without RSX, using SPE as scaler:

Wii is even more useless than PS3 since it only has 88MB of ram.

A custom CGX driver shouldn't take so much. First version could be unaccelerated and the next ones could use the SPEs to speed up blitting and overlay stuff.

I suggested that to "some" dev and he said it would be a too time consuming task :) Maybe time wouldn't be suchs a big issue if we could come up with an big enough bounty :-D

Oh and if every MOS dev would get a PS3 the development would propably halt as they would be too busy playing Super Stardust HD and Wipeout HD ;-)

Anyone knows that I am Pro-Efika, but a WII with its even more limited in memory will be good for nothing you can't do with the Efika, too. In such cases it will just waste energie.

The system may be faster, but you won't be able to run those programs which could need that speed boost.

Blender, Quake 1+2, Robin Hood work fine on Efika, but on Wii you would simply run out of memory.

The MAC is the only suitable hardware for porting, as its the only hardware thats faster, has more memory and full hardware acceleration support.

That's plenty as long as you don't run 3dlayers or anything else fancy, it's not as if you'd expect a Wii to turn into your main computer, besides, I'm sure Painkiller would happily experiment soldering on some more RAM. :P

No thanks (talk about complete waste of hardware (and electricity)).

Anyway, funnily enough, minutes after my last post I saw news about the PS3 flash-encryption being broken and ppl being able to hack/degrade their PS3, this is great progress .. give it a few more months and if these guys have managed to run proper homebrew with full hw-access by then we can talk...

no PS3. it would be a lot better to bring it to several mac systems, like a Powerbook or ibook. a PowerMac G5 Version f.ex would be pretty nice and HD Video playback would work just like a charm.

i would also think that a Powerbook or ibook port would make more sense than any "next-generation" console (PS3, Wii, XBox360. CD32, Colecovision etc.) support.

There are plenty of things that require more raw CPU power and bus-speed than they do memory, MPlayer being a very good example (though H.264 can eat a bit)...

I think that focusing in one port is the best thing to do when the "core developer" are so limited in number like in MorphOs ...
So, go for Mac port, it'll be a very good xmas present for many people! :-)
    Look at my signature...
    Just my 2 cents.

Agree 100% regarding MacMinis. Minis are going for around 200? for a complete system theese days. It should be possible to collect money for a couple of theese - at least.

Not to flame anything - just courious: Is there anything with the IP of MorphOS that stops it from beeing ported?
