In a few hours, there will be some great news coming to the Pegasos and MorphOS Community. It will still take some time to turn it all into something really meaningful to those developers that have stuck around, but it is coming. There is a lot happening now and while not just quite yet, we are about to take a *very* deep breath...;-)

OK, I've already done what is required: Read the press release, and the China article.

NOW, WHERE ARE THE PROTOTYPE PHOTOS? :-)

Arf arf, yum yum, gimme gimme...

(consider that, if Genesi gets to show that hardware right now, it will completely destroy all competition)

    Cool! :-)

What's a reasonable time fram for this? And what's with the "Server Workstation" name; what is it, a server or a workstation? :-P

This should be at the edge of the industry when it comes to power, right?

I'm also glad you haven't dropped the 32-bit CPU's over this (because you haven't, have you?). Still planning something with the MPC8641(D), are you?

How relevant will this be to MorphOS BTW? Both dual core, dual CPU and 64 bit on top of that?

When the 8641D arrives we will be ready for it.

    http://www.freescale.com/files/abstract/overview/FTF_TN102.pdf

Remember, Freescale announced the 7448 at EuroSNDF (September 2004) and we still do not have final production samples. We should have them in mid-October, while we have had initial samples for some time, made boards, etc.

The G5 development is all about IBM finally recognizing the success we have had with Freescale and now wanting the same thing, but directed at their target focus which is server-centric. What it means for Genesi is two big partners and that is great. What it means for developers is another Developer Program with another opportunity for a free machine tied to development effort. We think the IBM program will be even bigger than the Freescale one.

Now if we can get Sun Microsystems moving in our direction too...WOW! That would be really great!

This question about relevance is very important. Let's ask ourselves (as "morphers") this question: Which applications or services justify having such a monster hardware?
Software sells hardware, not the other way around. Such a misconception ("hardware first") comes from typical Amiga "education", and hasn't had any sense for years in the real world.

I admit MorphOS should be taken in a deeper consideration, but I also think that the long-term plans of Genesi are based on Linux and it is right.
I would say that MorphOS and Linux PPC are to the Pegasos platform as BeOS and Windows/Linux were to my old x86: the formers are great and pretty OSs on which you can experiment, learn to code, and "play", but are not necessary to the "economy" of the whole thig... While the latters are strictly necessary (I would exclude Windows, maybe...) and are mainstream softwares, with big developing efforts going on around them.
It could be a bitter truth, but MorphOS has no far future ahead...

@jcmarcos: so the hardware is not coming first, if you consider Linux...

What suitable northbridge(s) are there for this? What features do they have? Made by IBM themselves, perhaps?

Bottom line: What can we expect? :-)

  • Games and 3d realtime modeling!

This is brilliant news and we cant wait till the new motherboard is complete.

So it will have two processors?

Would this be the Pegasos III?

And if so... I was right!!!!
