I heard some squealing that 9600-drivers are in the works, so maybe it's worth waiting some more.

Is that sure? Are there any R(V)300 cards which supports the older 3.3v AGP standard the Pegasos uses? Not very useful to have a driver for cards you can't plug into the mobo... :-D

Anyway, i've a cheap Club3D Radeon 7500 64MB SDR AGP. Works well with MOS, overlay & everything, with a really satisfying speed. And with recent kernels i've 3D acceleration working on it, under Linux. Sadly, it has a small fan on it, but fortunately not noisy (yet).

Perhaps I can find some larger screen fonts to compensate but the built-in ones do not go that high, though.

Use true type fonts instead of bitmap fonts, as you can easily scale them to any size (as long as it isn't REALLY small) without quality loss. Try them, you should have some installed already.

Don't care about missing bigger sizes in the list, just type wanted size in box and there you go!

I've noticed that some of the TT fonts are missing characters...

    @Paochi

can you give a little more detail on How these four boards "felt" when using them with Mos. I am considering buying a Crucial 9200 from UltraSpec.
How does the 9200 perform compared to the 8500 and 9000pro in the 2D tests you performed? What features differentiate the 3 boards (2D)?

    Thanks

I use the same Radeon 7000 AGP as I had in my Peg 1 before. It was the cheapest Radeon I could find, and since there I can't use 3D stuff yet, why get a more expensive card now, when I can do it later. It's a 32MB SDRAM version and cost something like 34 EUR (310 SEK).

We have Radeon 9200 128MB in stock at UltraSspec for $95; call us for quotes on 9200 SE.

This is the same card that we use in our systems. I have not yet benchmarked in MOS. Performance seems to top out at 300 fps in glxgears (XFree86) with very little configuration tweaking.

I've been playing bzflag with it and haven't had any problems. It is a hell of a lot better than the budget nvidia piece of garbage I use at home :)

    I use a Radeon 7500 32MB low profile, which I bought at E-Bay for 18 Euro.
The image quality is excellent, but DivX in MPlayer don't play 100% smooth, altough the CPU usage is only about 30%... any ideas what could be wrong?

I could give my Voodoo 3 3000 a try, just to see if its a gfx card (driver) problem or MPlayer/MorphOS related.

    Hi magnetic

    > When you guys say "video playback is good" you mean with Mplayer? How is fullscreen mode? Is there any blockiness/ugliness. What about DVD playback. Please let me know. Thanks

    --------------------------

    Jumping into this thread also.

    About video playpack on Radeon.

As for what I feel it works with very good quality on my Radeon 7000 64MB DDR in my Pegasos II G4. Maybe my G4 is faster then yours, he he... ;-)

Well, without joking, I cant see any blocks or anything on the display, either in fullscreen mode or as a window on desktop.

I had this setup on the AmiGBG show two weekends ago, and the machine was playing the DVD - Lord of the two towers - most of the time, so anyone who saw could perhaps tell if they thought the display was bad in some part or so.

    hello,

i have phoned 2 local dealers, in France, for a Radeon9200 Pro but they can not obtain this card which is no more available. they proposed me to update to Radon9600 or 9800 but these cards will not work on Pegasos 1 or 2.

Of course they want you to get 9600 and higher it costs a fortune! I'd say go for a Radeon 9000 if you can find one - and honestly the Radeon 7000 series with DDR ram is good and cheap. BUt for linux use Rad 8500 or 9000 for 128bit bandwidth.

    @Gunne

Voodoo has much better video playback than radeon due to blockiness/chunkiness

In the US their are many dealers that stock the ATI 9200se as the lowend card, 9600 as mid-range and 9800 as the highend, now the cards come from different manufactures, but these are all available.

The inavailability may be due to your local dealers preference or the demand they have... and of course they want you to buy the higher priced models ;-)

    magnetic:

Ok, I believe you. Haven't used Voodoo myself so very much, just tried it worked with the Pegasos, and it did ;-)

    Brumiga:

Just would like you to know, we have all kinds of different Radeon-cards to sell. From radeon 7000 and upwards.

Dont know which card you mean by Radeon 9200 Pro though, if you mean with 256MB DDR onboard, it is available also.

Haven't tried that one with the Pegasos, but with 128MB works without problem.

I'm using a Radeon 7000 card with great results. My monitor is an old 14" DigiView HR-55 and can only do 1024 x 768 at 56hz and its to small at that. I dont have a DVD drive yet, but video cd plays great and smooth even in full screen with Mplayer.

I ran a P96Speed and MAME benchmark between my Radeon 9000
and 9100, and as far as 2D, they were practically identical.

With Linux, surprisingly the 9000 was a tad faster handling
3D ops - exactly 350 glxgears compared to 328 with the
9100. (This is with a G3, BTW) My guess is the drivers
just work better with the 9000 ATM.

At least in Linux, fullscreen mplayer performance can be greatly improved by using better modelines tailored to dvd and vcd video mode.

Both fullscreen and windowed will play like total ####e with the oss/free drivers. Install alsa with oss compatibility or upgrade to kernel 2.6.
