Wings Remastered - new demo sound issue

    Did you try the newest "Wings: Remastered" demo from Daytona? I gave it a try and got a strange sound issue. It just doesn't seem right (no matter the original or updated soundtrack), sounds so "iron", like its sampling rate was 8 bit or lower.

    I've investigated the matter further and it seems that this weird sound is somewhat connected to MorphOS version. Everything fine on 3.12 and crippled on 3.13.

    EDIT: Same goes for other Daytona games: Voxelnoid, Amazing Voxel Bird Saga, and the first Wings: Remastered demo. MorphOS bug?

    That's right. I've reported all that to Daytona and now he's cross checking the sound system against Tower 57.

    Noticed that too in Voxelnoid since 3.13. Can't remember this being an issue in 3.12 neither.

    The bug wasn't introduced in MorphOS 3.13: It has been there for nearly 20 years (all versions of MorphOS native ixemul.library).

    What happened is a bit more complicated:
    1. Unbeknownst there were two bugs: One in MorphOS itself and one in ixemul.library
    2. Bug in MorphOS itself was fixed for 3.13
    3. Fixing the bug in MorphOS 3.13 made the bug in ixemul.library visible

    In short: The bug in MorphOS hid the bug in ixemul.library.

    I'm hoping a new ixemul.library will be released shortly. Meanwhile this issue is easy to workaround by either not using ixemul.library in native ports (this is highly recommended) or by using fesetround(FE_TONEAREST); as first thing in main of the ixemul app (there are no ill side effects from this, and the ixemul app will continue to work as before even with fixed ixemul.library).

    Important fix for me since my MorphOS-PPC-gear is my prime Voxelnoid gaming machine. ;-)

    Props for releasing the hotfix separately, so people don't have to wait for the next release! 👍
    This is just like television, only you can see much further.
