    Hi Guys !

I'm new system user and looking for some advice with choosing a most flexible music player for MorphOS. I would like to be able to play mp3, amiga modules and good old commodore sids. It'll be a great if player would have a shuffle option and playlist editor.

Many Thanks for any Information and advice.

Personally I really like using JukeBox, in conjunction with RNOInfoScreen v1.5 by jPV, and then there's MilkyTracker via MorphOS-Storage where there are many other music players to choose from, along with Aminet. MilkyTracker can play/convert mod files into WAV files, which you can play as-is in JukeBox or convert them with CodeAudio, or some other mp3 creator, and edit the TAGs with MP3TagEditor v2.2 (68k - Aminet) so you can then play them in JukeBox or whatever music player you prefer, such as AmiNetRadio, or ExciterPlayer, or GoatTracker, or ..... well there's too many to list realistically, so just try them out and decide for yourself which you prefer to use. 8-)

    Thanks NewSense.
JukeBox looks simple and that's why I like it straight away. Shame, but looks that player which could handle mods and sids (as they are) doesn't exist and everything need to be converted to wave or mp3 :/

    Hi,

Technically speaking, Jukebox could play anything if Reggae has the decoder/demuxer of the file format.

If you like to play mods/sids, write some Reggae demuxer/decoder class. ;)

Try Amoral Player. Don't know how it runs on MorphOS, but it can play both.

I miss draggable screens... and do you? I know I'm in a minority unfortunately.

AmiNetRadio should cover your needs, since it has a very versatile playlist editor, support for MOD (and quite a few more formats, check "Players") and comes with a kitchen sink. It does not however play SID, for that you could use Sid4Amiga.

mods can be played using the built-in left double-mouse-click option usually, or by using the right-click menu selection "Play" from within MorphOS, which is basically doing the same thing. :-D

Well SIDS were never Amiga files anyway, but as has already been suggested there are other options/players to choose to be able to play them directly "out-of-the-box". ;-)

I never got "sids" really as the music resolution isn't the same as what was achievable with the Amiga or since with other music formats, but I'm sure you'll find some player you like to be able to listen to them quite easily. 8-)

With both AmiNetRadio and Delitracker running on MorphOS, I guess you can play any mod/song format.

AmiNetRadio can be quite unstable, but it might be related to music formats you play. Anyway, my tries always end to crashes with it :)

I prefer Jukebox for mp3 files, because it has some more modern features.. especially the screenbar module options is what I love. You can easily control and see what's playing from other screens etc... I've so used to that now that I can't use any other programs anymore :) It's a "simple" player, but it actually has more useful options for my needs than other players.

For mods there are many options, check what MorphOS Storage has to offer for players. For example, DAPlayer looks like a solid option for a GUI based mod player (it actually plays mp3, aiff, wav, flac, ogg, CDDA raw data, midi, dbm, mod, s3m, xm, it files as well as mp3 and ogg streams and audio CDs.

MPlayer also plays mods if files are named with .mod extension. MorphOS port of MPlayer has a MUI GUI with playlists etc.

I don't have such instabilities for ogg/mp3 streaming on chiptunes (mod, geronto lib, ...).
It become unstable when playing with playlists too much anyway.

You have a nice screenbar module for AmiNetRadio aswell. :)

If DeliTracker is mentioned, Eagleplayer should as well :-)

JukeBox hangs badly with big mp3 files and also aminetradio sometimes crashes randomly with some audio files. Too bad AmigaZeux never released a new version for this great player :-/

Hangs badly? What's happening? How big is the MP3? Played myself 2h long MP3 without trouble.

I cannot say I have ever had a "hang" with JukeBox either in all the time I have used it. It is very stable for me. 8-D

JukeBox is quite cool but it has a simple bug: the media info window is never refreshed when the song changes. So can not leave it open to see the updated information because after each song it displays the old information. It should simply be refreshed. All other players like VLC, MPlayer etc. do it. Would be nice if JukeBox could so as well.

Way to go Andreas . . . . I agree with you . . . . +1 (did I really say that .... 8-D ) that's obviously for EaglePlayer v2.05, though I still have the occasional "issue" with it misbehaving when used with MorphOS still. As that "fix" didn't fix everything it seems as it's still nowhere near as stable as on a Classic Amiga. Though I really used to like EaglePlayer on my A1200 / A600 / A4000s, but I suppose MP3s have taken over from where .mod files left off for me, and probably for many other computer users from that era.

I'm speaking totally from memory here, and it was an awfully long time ago, but AmiNetRadio uses mpega.library to decode mp3.

If you're having problems with ordinary mp3 crashing on it, maybe try different versions of it. I know there's a version native on MorphOS, but there's also 68020 and 68040 versions you could try.

Edit: There is no 68000 version. Corrected.

In fact, the UI here works a bit differently and there is *no* bug here. That's not the properties of the playing track that is displayed in this window but the properties of the track you asked for with the list menu.

List menu is called a *contextual* menu. And the context here is the list entry. From a UI design pov, this behaviour is perfectly right.

If you load a playlist in VLC and call the 'Information' contextual menu entry, you'll get exactly the same behaviour: multiple windows.

The feature you're talking about is the 'Tools / Media Informations' menu entry which is located on the application menu in VLC, not in the listview. This window content is indeed bound to playing track. Jukebox has not this feature.

The screenbar module for AmiNetRadio (ScreamBar) has this feature. ;)

Well, tried to drag&drop mp3 file and mod file into its window and it crashed with both tries here now :) And when adding a mod file through playlist it started to play it, but made a hit to the log... I wonder if I have wrong version of some player file or what's causing that. Have to check some time.

But generally if drag&drop doesn't work and adding files through the playlist editor takes too many steps, I don't feel it comfortable to use either :)

I've forgot to try that earlier, but tried now, thanks for the reminder. I'm still missing the option to see the song that's playing on the screenbar without needing to have a separate window or popup for that. I'm actually using Jukebox iconified (and iconify icon disabled from MUI settings) so in normal use I don't have anything but the screenbar module for everything :)

And ScreamBar's button graphics doesn't seem to suit for dark skins like I have... those should be configurable too.
