What has happened to the native ScummVM MorphOS port?

    It seems that tomjoad is very busy with his work, I was sended him a private message but he doesn't replied, if you see this please reply in PM or here. About if there are others interested on maintain the MorphOS backend of ScummVM, could be nice that, and if tomjoad collabores too will be better, less work for each one...

    I mean the native one, that uses cgx5 instead of SDL, backend/morphos in ScummVM by tomjoad. latest ScummVM is 0.6.1 and tomjoad port is 0.5.1, but the most important thing is that someone maintain the MorphOS backend. SDL port is slower and buggy (on my system).

    SDL port is a lot slow compared with native port. Native port it seems be less buggy.

    This post isn't a "port this" thread, it's because the maintainer of the MorphOS backend seems abandonated it (maybe temporary), so I just ask if someone want to update it maintaining the done work, that's all. I like that tomjoad continue maintainin the MorphOS backend of ScummVM, only doing a public thread for if he see it and others, because he doesn't reply to my private messages, he seems very occupied, let's see if someone continue his work (maybe temporary). Not "port thread, is a "continue thread".

    If I'm not mistaken, the current maintainer of the MorphOS port is Fabien Coeurjoly.

    No, it is a fast SDL port, but it seems slow and buggy :-(

    mmh, what bugs did you encounter ? I'm aware of only one issue, with scalers, requiring 24 bits screenmode. But it's far more stable than the native version that had serious issues with the timer code.
    I guess the bugs you encountered are related to an old version of powersdl.

    The last time I was probed, I encountered problems with the dig, wrong colours...

    A fast made port, only modify a few things and compile for use SDL.

    About slow, because the native port is faster, use less processor power.

    I must admit; I really didn't want to bother writing a reply, but
    sinds talking to the mentally unstable is my work, I'll be so kind to
    share you my OPINION of the game:

    For me, this game follows the explorations of three overtly
    stereotypical characters through unimaginative, predicatble plot
    twists. The dialogs are just as stereotypical and while the game tries
    to take itself seriously, it feels like watching and playing a flawed
    b-movie. Also, I found the the puzzles inordinately difficult; some
    being illogical, while others just call for trial and error; just a
    handfull called for logic. In comparison with other lucasarts
    adventures, ranging from the Monkey Island series to a Day of the
    Tentacle or a Full Throttle, The Dig is fatally flawed.

    But hey, that's just my OPINION, you filthy-mouthed oik!

Anyway just want to add, that i really would like to have the tooltypes again from tomjoads Version :-) (I d´ like to use my scumm bubbles again, without making a script)

    Oh and is there a way to speed up mpeg a bit? (Cutscenes in broken sword is slow as hell on my Peg 1)

    BTW did you compile the cvs Version? Afaik it has now support for Inherrit the Earth (Erben der Erde) one of my favourite adventures, do you know if the Amiga Version (mod files) is also supported?

    About wrong colors, this is probably an old bug of powersdl, and a new version should cure that.

    Tooltypes, yes, i think about them, don't worry.

    About mpeg playback, i'm quite surprised. it ran quite well on my peg1, just a few framedrops from times to times.

    I was liked a lot the native port because the current SDL library (even the latest) is still very slow using it conparing to the same program using cgx5, still it needs be heavily optimized I think. The tooltypes thing of the the tomjoad port are really very good feature. Fab, not interested on try to maintain the native port?

    "sdl much slower than native cgx5" is a legend you know. In fact in a window mode, it would be quite difficult to make it much faster. In fullscreen, it maybe be possible to gain 50-75% speed in the blit phase. But you know, the blit part is only a fraction of the whole process. So in the end, with a native port, you may gain 10-15% speed. I don't know if it's worth the effort, considering it already works well on a Peg1 (well except maybe libmpeg2 stuff).

    Uhm, I was seen very fast the tomjoad port, did you tried and compared in power consuming?

    Maybe the mpeg2 decompression is the thing must be optimized?

    I just made a comparison, on day of the tentacle:
    during a scroll, 0.5.1 eats 25-30% cpu on my G4.
    0.6.1 (sdl version), eats exactly the same amount. On a static screen sdl version uses 5% while natie version uses 8%.

    With monkey island 2, 0.5.1 eats 12% cpu while 0.6.1 eats 20% on a static screen. Both use 30% while scrolling.


    So you see, SDL is not *much* slower. If you know a game where the difference is more important, please tell me. and don't forget 0.6.1 is more recent and may be slower than a 0.5.1 version, even if native.
