If you have been reading the UAE thread I stared you know its turned into an idea for us to start a "bounty" system like the AROS and Mozilla guys have done. What I would like to see is for someone we can trust to set up a Paypal account that we can put money into for various projects to get ported over. A few good starts would be a full featured UAE (we are so close to this now) openoffice.or port ect. We can have sections with software we want and then links to the paypal account so we can add to the pot.

I would pay for a domain name and registration for a year to start if someone can write the web pages and another can start the account at paypal? I would prefer targ or someone like him to maintain the money.

As I said in the UAE thread this is a great initiative. Maybe you can contact Targhan to see if he can put up a section on MZ or so? Or maybe Genesi will host a small site dedicated to this/

this would be nice, but I think that it's very hard to port apps like Mozilla or OO.org and I doubt that some $$$ would make it much easier, that's the problem...

Who is talking about such big projects? How about smaller ones.. Putty or Atlantis (cough galaxy, cough!) .. or any other useful tool for the masses.
Why go for almost impossible projects when there are literally thousands of smaller ports available with 100 times better change to succeed?

I agree that OO.org isn't really a top priority project for MorphOS... a port of Putty supporting all keys (including cursor, page up/down) would be very nice and the best would ofcourse be KHTML/FireFox, which is the only piece of software I really miss on MorphOS...

Here's one for the bounty list: Quake2 MOS...since the version that exists is only available to a small group of....lucky people I guess :-P . Anyway the source is available on Aminet. And didn't I hear Tokai say something about a beta (MOS) version of Unreal Tournament?

/me thinks Tokai should take shelter at Bigfoot's place :-D

Is there progress with setting up the bounty list? I can't help with it because I don't do web design.

Here's another item for the list: DOpus Magellan.

This is a bit special since the source isn't yet open. But GP Software has annonced that it is on sale again. See http://www.amiga-news.de/en/news/AN-2004-05-00002-EN.html

So we had to raise funds for buying it first. I certainly have some money to donate for this.

Great help here Scott! How about a web page coder now? Thats all we need to get it off the ground. We need to start with some SMALL apps to get people going. I never said anything about the huge ones. Maybe they can be listed, but all the money would go to them and nothing would get done.

    Ok guys

    Reality Check time

I've been 100% behind this effort. Its a great idea. Here are some hard facts for you so we dont waste bandwidth

    1. Quake 2 must be licensed from ID - the one rumoured was for a demonstration only not for distribution and may have been destroyed

    2. NO WAY will ANYONE port Mozilla ( which BTW is called that because of the HUGE SIZE OF CODE - a BIG LIZARD) without alot of $$$ and time

    3. NO WAY will ANYONE Port OpenOffice see #2

    4. We have Payprus office coming out commercially -

    5. You can install and run linux and use OOo.org

    6. Quake2 sux - you can even get the FREE CUBE 3d FPS shooter on the net for MOS

    7. We need creative games, reasonable ports (stuff like MythTV and Gnome Meeting or so would be nice)

    blah blah blah

    ;-)

You mean datafiles need to be licenced and not actual exe (sources were released under gpl if I'm not mistaken) ?

I would love to see a native version of this too.
I am using the 68K Version in Morphos atm.

Which language was used for coding it?

I think there is a reason why Hyperion did nothing with it (and not only lack of time).

    @Magnetic

The quake2 exe was released under GPL, if I'm also not mistaken; you can even get the modified hyperion sources from aminet! It 'll cost 1 to 5 euro's to buy the original cd-rom for the data-files. And true, maybe quakeII isn't a great game, but it's (if only graphically) better than quakeI and besides, I couldn't even get Cube 3d running (crashes on startup ;-) )

I think saying "you can install linux and use ..." is plain silly; we are looking for either (good) ported software or native MOS apps. If I liked using linux I wouldn't even bother with MOS.

I agree that ports like Mozilla or OpenOffice are not likely to happen, but on the other hand: this is what the people want. I don't see the harm in mentioning them. When (or if) we get this project working, then coders themselfs will decide wheter doing a port of OpenOffice/Mozilla/Whatever is impossible. I do think Acill is right though and that big (impossible) ports may be listed, but not at the cost of more smaller (possible) ports.

What about a port of Doom Legacy a great enhanced version of Doom, Doom II and Hexen, the sources are available. This would be great once there's 3d support for Radeons.

I think we need to get the focus on getting the web site made, and then we can add the first of the bounties. Come on web page builders!

I would appreciate a version of wxwidgets which would utilize MUI. Having that a bunch of new sw could immediately appear on MOS as a native version using MUI.
Not that wx would solve at least everything but it would definately enhance the MOS software buket.

I'm just saying lets not waste time talking about Mozilla and OO. They ARE NOT going to happen. Period. Too huge...

more realistic ports should be discussed is all

The funny thing is not many coders have posted on this thread - just guys like us who want ports ;-)

Exactly. But, a modern web browser is still very important to almost everyone.

May I suggest that instead of creating bounties for specific applications that bounties are created for more generics. For example, instead of a bounty for "Mozilla", create a bounty for a "modern web browser with HTML4, DOM3, JS1.5, & CSS2.1 support". Of course, this will need a committee to determine whether an application will meet the criteria set.

This way the bounty applies for any MOS-specific applications, as well as any port, that are written that might be equal in quality and functionality to whatever someone wanted ported.

And on the subject of a modern web browser, all is not quite as bleak as it might seem :-D
