In the Powerbook 5,8 (A1138) there is a small silvered plastic (electrical insulating) covered rechargeable battery that keeps the clock and some other features/preferences retained for its user, but as
Kronos has already mentioned the PRAM battery, which is specific to this model, only gets charged once the main battery is fully charged, so you need to keep the Powerbook on charge for a good while once the main battery has charged, or it won't get charged.
In any case, if it's been powered off for a while then it's probably already totally discharged and needs the above charging process to be followed.
The A1138 (PRAM) battery (I believe the part number is 820-1819-A) can often be found for sale on that well known internet selling site
eeB-A or you could try
PowerBook Medic - USA, as they often carry lots of spares and probably have some of these batteries from used Powerbooks, and they are usually very helpful, and knowledgeable on such matters.
Hope this helps those of you with this issue.
