My new peg2 => G4 module VERY HOT !!!

I just tested this morning my new peg 2. It is a replacement from bplan because the first I had was not working.

But I really fell that I'm having a neverending nightmare: I fear to let the peg switched on for more than 7 or 8 seconds because the left side of the G4 module become VERY HOT afer 7 or 8 seconds... I tried one time to let it boot. I saw the OF, I changed some env var (boot-file, etc.). But I switched the peg off before trying anything else because the G4 module was becoming EXTREMELY hot.

Also, my hardrive don't spin up if I plug the ribbon cable on the MB. But all work fine on my Peg1/G3...

So anyone have an idea ?

This sounds like some kind of nasty elektrical shortcut in your
pegasos. Go back to your dealer this is not ok. I have felt on my
own pegasos and it is only a little warm, even with 90% usage. and if
i took the rotator off and then it is not even hot.

But if all hardware worked on your peg 1 it is maybe a logical
conclusion that your pegasos 2 is not ok. :-(

The problem is that this peg2 come directlmy from bplan because it is a warranty return. I allready received a PEg2 in May 2004, but it was not working (faulty north bridge). I I returned it. Now the new one seems not to work... Will it be an infinite loop ?... Bplan and Genesi take loooong time to anwser in general, and looooong time to replace damaged board. So I really fear that I will never have a running peg 2 :((

Just to check - is the CPU cooler attached OK? It could have become loose in transport.

Go through and check the physical connections. Everything in pushed into their slots OK?

Jit, please forgive Genesi and bPlan for not answering as fast as you would like but as you can imagine they get thousand of mails per day aqnd they are working hard on the SNDF events and for built a real future for the Pegasos. If you have such trouble with your board I guess the best thing is to contact directly bPlan to fix the problem without blowing your board. They take time to answer but they alway do ;-)

Well, the G4 gets always very hot. Even with the
cooler attached right ... thats why it's not delivered
with a passive heatsink like the G3 ... are you sure it's not normal ?

Indeed, and even the G3's get "quite warm" (read: feels *very hot* when you press your fingers against it) when running at 100% for some time, which is normal and generally not a problem at all!

I have a feeling that different poeples' definitions of "very hot" varies a lot. OK, this may not be too relevant, but at least it may offer some kind of reference: If you put down your hand in some water that is much warmer than 45 degrees C, you may risc getting *scalded*. At 55 degrees C, you most certainly will. OK, that is *water*, which is quite different from this, but anyway ...

Anyone, feel free to correct me about the following (because Physics was not my biggest strength in school if you know what I mean ;-)): If you are able to press your fingers hard around the base of the cooler, *and hold them there*, then I would almost dare to claim that the temp probably is well below some 60 degrees C or so at the Junction. While this temperature most certainly will feel "very hot" to your hand, it usually shouldn't be a problem at all. I think I remember reading somewhere about some general recommendation (I may remember this wrong though, can't even remember where I read it) of keeping the average temperature of the 7447 CPU below 85 degrees or so (you would not be able to press your fingers at the base of that one I think), and as far as I understand, the max Junction temp for 7447 CPU in the specifications is 105 degrees C (which is warmer than the boiling point of water (try pressing your fingers against a metal kettle of boiling tea water ;-))).

The 7447 product summary page: http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=MPC7447&nodeId=018rH3bTdG8653

Any comments on these bold claims? ;-)

I do remember for sure that my Peg1 G3 600 CPU would get above 80 degrees C when being in the OF.

I don't know what is so CPU intensive in the OF.
Not sure if that changed since then.

No it is not normal, Like i have told above the CPU is not hot but warm at your vingers. even if i had no cooling fan (the one that turn around and blowing wind away) the G4 is NOT HOT.

I know with my elektronic skills that a chip that is to hot for your fingers than there is a shortcut or there went something wrong with the factoryproces. You can even check with a meter for leaking current.

Julien, after all the effort so many have made to get you satisfied with a working system it seems such a pity that this is happening a second (almost third) time. Did you see the email that Thomas sent to you this morning? It was sent to your bluemind.org email address.
