So is it "just" the original Freescale board or already a slightly modified bplan design?

I guess it's the original board (just with the white connector on top added onto already given contacts onto the PCB), "just" with bplan's Smart Firmware?

To me it looks like bplan design. It seems to have different (and smaller) form factor than Freescale Evaboards..

Basic motivation for going to MPC5200 are likely to be system size, power and pricing.

MPC 5200 have PCI, USB, IDE, Ethernet and DDRAM controllers integrated to CPU so it'll needs considerably less support chips than 744x series. Also it needs only about 1 watt to run, so it'll be nice for power/heat restricted uses.

It won't repalce 7447/7448 though.. it's core speed is 'only' 400MHz (466 on lates revision) and it does not have Gigaethers..

This new device will obviously not be a general desktop workstation, but a foundation, or a building block, for more specifically targeted applications. It will be interesting to see what may come out of this. :-)

    Anyone got any ideas?

Set top boxes and information kiosks are given, IMHO. What's more?

As Joanna pointed out, it seems a slightly modifyied design, but I could be wrong. However there's a clue in some of the pictures taken at FTF:
    http://images.pegasosppc.com/galleries/ftf_orlando_1/DSC00216.jpg
Here Genesi lists 3 products: the PegasosII, the ODW and the EFIKA 5K2. Given the fact that the first two are bPlan's designs, and given the fact that Freescale's dev boards for the MPC5200 are called Lite5200 and Total5200 and there's no mention of this EFIKA, I'd say it is likely to be a new design from bPlan...

    Kind regards,
    Andrea

Well spotted - although this would mean bplan had changed from Greek to Esperanto. :-) Or does the same word also exist in Greek?

Now we can stop speculating, it's quite official, and it seems I was quite right - and I'm happy I was:

Taking a look at the pics in the EFIKA 5K2 gallery, I see the bPlan logo on the new small board... ;-)

    Kind regards,
    Andrea

    It isn't that good.

    And mine... I suggested a "Micro-Peg" 2 1/2 years ago </gloat>

Didn't think they'd ever build it though!

Anyway, it's a good development, MorphOS should run fine on a board like this, some things will be slower no doubt but with the built in memory controller somethings might actually be *faster*.

It should be really cheap to make so no one is going to care about the performance anyway, there's a ready market of hobbyists out there currently playing with things like the Dream box and VIA boards.

Supplied with MOS it'll be a perfect "first hit", they'll get to like it then want more so they'll look at the Peg...

Of course there's also a million and one embedded type uses which it could be used for.

In case they manage to produce such a mini board really cheap, maybe Genesi should also revisit their earlier idea of cooperating with countries which computer/internet infrastructure is still far from ours.

So, for example, also the other billion people country besides Freescale's planned China activities might be an interesting target: India's government plans to equip each of its towns above 5000 residents with an internet cafe.

As a start, 20 villages in the federal state Karnataka are going to get so-called kiosks with up to ten simple computers each. The internet connection will be achieved either per telephone line or - in more remote regions - via satellite.

The original name ("Effica") is not very attractive. Why can't it be "Pony", if it's bigger brother is called after a horse ("Pegasos")?

And my prize for the most useless comment is...
