Hi all

think I might need to check my fans. The base of the laptop is getting quite hot, Is there any apps for powerbook morphos to check fan speed? i cant really hear them so im guessing they are not working...

Mine is same as yours 0% ON BOTH left and right fans @ 32c when should the fans start spinning

Which model do you own? There’s a bug that effectively disables fan controls on older models... fixed in 3.12.

Afair there are no active fan controls for the slower PowerBooks like yours. The fans should spin in auto mode - the sensor would still show 0 there though. Unless you get into 75C+ range, there really isn’t much to worry about.

Just don’t run DNetc on it ;) (the same applies to any other PowerBook user out there)

I have an A1106 that a friend sent to me saying it was "misbehaving" (turning off for no apparent reason - and refusing to power up again - i.e. during web browsing). I made some stress tests on it (including having it running dnetc client for a whole day and night) and finally replicated the issue. Now that you mention it - could it be overheating?

If the fans weren't running at all, I doubt you'd get much past the firmware before the emergency switchoff kicked in. There's usually an audible alarm if the CPU fan does fail, but I have no idea if Mac machines have it.

Thermal paste does age, and it mixes with dust. I had to replace my i7's last summer - CPU temps were routinely hitting 100°C even when intentionally underclocked. It didn't happen overnight, but steadily got worse over the years. Bought a five quid kit, wiped the crusty old crud off with a solvent that smelled like oranges, reapplied new paste, fixed in 10 minutes. Back to 38°C, which it hasn't been since I bought it in 2011.

That was a desktop. Doing the same thing in a laptop - especially an Apple one - is a lot harder. If in doubt, take it to a repair shop and let them do it; they can check and clean your fans too. Pricey though, considering how cheap the machine is now.

G4 Powerbooks (at least 1.67GHz models) are cooled semi-passively, fans start to spin at ~50C. Emergency switchoff happens at ~80C. Also, can run with fans removed.

It is a bit cumbersome and takes time but is doable. I was successful using the disassembly guides from ifixit, and the Powerbook sure is more silent now.

For example 2-Fan Notebook Cooling Pad.
