    Hello,

    i would like to sold a Powerbook 15" à 1.5GHz.

OSX reconize 2Gb but under MorphOS reconize only memory up (1Gb).

Is it an hardware problem or MorphOS doesn't support memory on support down please ?

    Thanks for your answer

What happens if you swap the RAM modules? Still only the upper is visible?

I'd give an Apple Service Diagnostic CD a spin and go through the RAM test.

@ Papiosaur - Which model of PowerBook is it?

What is the make/model of RAM?

Speed conflicts can be a problem I believe for most OS systems, but if it works in OSX then I'd have thought it should work/get recognised in MorphOS just the same.

I have had a few issues with RAM, but not of the type you have mentioned here . . . well not so far !! 8-)

This would mean bad RAM. But maybe the contact pins are worn out/dirty. Or maybe the RAM slots need resoldering on the motherboard. Some PowerBooks were notorious for developing "only one RAM slot working" symptom over time. Read more here.

There's a link in this thread I believe.

    There are 2 x 1.5GHz G4 15" Aluminium models - the early A1106, PowerBook G4 1.5 15" (SMS/BT2 - Al), and the A1095

I believe that is a RAM error code, as I remember having that issue on a couple of occasions.

Maybe MorphOS is a bit more picky or better capable of diagnosing such issues than the Mac OSX? :-D

I believe both those models use PC2700 RAM, but if you can quote the make/model of RAM you are using then maybe others can offer more better suited advice, but it does sound like you've either got a PwrBk with faulty RAM slot(s) or the RAM is not connecting with the pins of the logicboard connector for other reasons, which maybe the RAM itself, but is more probably the logicboard connectors, sadly.

I've posted the direct link to Apples Diagnostic CD above. Why this link to this consternate thread?

I have here one of those PowerBooks with failed lower RAM slot (the factory slot). I never found a way to revive this slot. But the behaviour is different from what you described here. On my system neither the Hardware Test CD, OS X or MorphOS can see and use the installed memory. In OpenFirmware or with the Hardware CD you can see the type and vendor of the installed module, but the size is zero.

So in short, I guess you have a different issue :-)

    I have a powerbook G5 1.5ghz and 1.25gb memory, it's working fine under Morphos.
Both slots are working one with 1gb memory and the other one with 256mb memory.

    Strange...

He wrote that the PB recognizes 2GB under MacOS!! Then hardware could'nt be faulty! There seems to be a problem with MorphOS. It could be, that this is realy a PB with MOS only supports 1 GB. But I think, this is a question for MOS-Team........

With the dignostic CD, when i select Stand Alone Tests, the lower support is in ghost mode...

When i select Hardware info in menu, the two memory module are recognized...

Please go to Open Firmware and enter this
    Code:
    dev / memory
    .properties

    and post the output.

Sorry, but that looks exactly like a dying slot.
The range line shows the RAM size for each slot. And the first one shows only 000.....

Edit (I was in a hurry and had only my mobile to answer):

To be more precise, the range lines gives start and end addresses for each RAM module found. 0 - 0 means no address range for slot0 (the lower one, called factory slot). I don't know how Open Firmware detects the RAM sizes, but I would guess with some kind of read/write tests to certain addresses. If everything went well the Apple Chime will sound during startup. If you don't hear anything, something is fishy.

Regarding the RAM slot, my theory is that there is some kind of soldering issue or an issue with the slot itself. It seems that the SPD can always be read out, but the size check fails. So maybe address lines and/or data lines are affected. Apple didn't care about that, they simply replaced the logic boards back in the days.
You can also override the range line in OF, but this will most likely crash MorphOS or the HW test when accessing the RAM module.
Why OS X sees more RAM is strange, with my defective PowerBook OS X also ignores the lower RAM module. So try to load up some memory intensive things in OS X and see if it is crashing...

Yeah, one slot being dead is very common. I've had several of those myself in the past.

Very interessting - seems realy dead! But why does then MacOS found 2GB? Did'nt see such a behaviour till yet..........

Mac OS X does some things differently than System 9 before. So maybe it does not rely on the range detection of OF alone, but does some own tests which work in this case (but not in mine).

    I don't think so.

MorphOS will use whatever the OF reports. Are you certain OSX actually uses 2GB even if it reports having 2GB in System Report?

This is the strange thing: OF reports only 1 GB (see comment #16) but MacOS reports 2GB (comment #1)!
    That's a bit confusing.........
