2 questions about the Powermac G5 models:

    - The DUAL 2.5 Model has the SAME motherboard of the DUAL 2.7? If I take a 2.5 it will be eventually swap the CPU modules with 2.7 ones?

    - It would be possible to remove one of the 2 CPUs and this would help to decrease power consumption and heat production in the case?

Changing/removing CPUs in any G5 has a good chance for the fans going full power all the time.

    Want a 2.7 G5 ? Buy a 2.7 G5 *duh*

Not sure wether an G5 CPU set to idle will eat that much power anyways.

I ask this beacuse I found a good powermac G5 dual 2.5 near here with good spec and at a good price and I can buy the 2.7 cpus elsewhere. Can someone confirm that swapping the CPUs will work please?

    Thanks.

You will !atleast! have to run an HW-diagnostic to get the CPUs calibrated (otherwise 100% certain to get fans at full RPM).

Calibrating has good chance of failure when CPUs with a different clock than original is used.

With these watercooled G5 you should also consider leaking. Those pumps came in 2 versions, leaky and lotta-leaky and AFAIK the older the G5 is (and the 2.5 is the oldest watercooled) the higher the chances of getting the lotta-leaky version.

Even if you buy a non-leaking G5, reworking that system is about as essantial as removing clock-batteries in real Amigas :-P

Miky, I'd just use the 2.5 CPUs.That is what I intend to do.
If support is in place for the 2.7, the 2.5 systems should work too. There is very little difference.

AmigaDave is sending me a 2.5 GHz G5 (although I am in no hurry as support is not ready yet and I owe him a Radeon 9800XT video card for his system).

David and I both have R400 based cards for the G5s, but we want to be sure to have supported hardware.

    >- It would be possible to remove one of the 2 CPUs and this would help to decrease power consumption and heat production in the case?

Not recommended it messes with the firmware and fan controls.

I am gonna completely crush one of my 2.7 towers with passive heatsinks and see how long it lasts. The 2.7 tower I did the heatsink swap on had a leaky LCS, and my 2nd 2.7 tower is a newer revised LCS, but I will still tear it down and redo the LCS. Figured since MorphOS will have fan control on it, I can turn up the fans on the passive 2.7 and be ok. If not, who cares. :) Ill just throw the 2.7 through a rock crusher. 8-)

    @Milky060:

As i know unfortunatellydifferent mobos and different cpu's won't work.
That's why you can't upgrade and even overclock your existing g5 config...And there is zero 3rd party company which is offer it. Compare it to g4 market there is a lot of company still offer cpu upgrades/overclocking.

My Powermac Dual 2.7 Motherboard, with replaced aircooled 2.0GHz CPUs, probably due to coolant failure has turned up. Ignoring the huge dents that Royal Mail have caused I had to do a load of fiddling with memory to get it going, anyway it was working with the fans on full until I ran the fan recalibration application on the ASD 2.5.8, which fixed it great.

I believe that the which I believe is freely available at sites such as

At least I believe it freely available, I mean it's not like Apple would restrict the availability of such a useful tool would they?

Anyway, I'm all set and ready for the G5 Powermac version of MorphOS.

    Just sayin'.

Yes, I am also ready when it gets here. I have a 2.3Ghz Dual CPU G5 , 2 GB ram, Radeon 9600 Pro coming my way. I am looking to get back into writing some software projects soon so the G5 will be a big plus on that front. Also hoping for much improved UAE performance for those classic Amiga games and apps. I have to say that after all this time MorphOS is still the setup I keep coming back to, so it's a good investment for sure.

What's the status of the port?

It's been a little while since we've heard any updates. There were some screenshots and progress reports. It's been pretty quiet lately...

Yes it was quiet as Bigfoot had a very little time for MorphOS in March. The good news is that from the beggining of next week he is back on track so we can expect G5 port to be finished soon (there isn't much left) and then fingers crossed for a 3.2 release (of course when it's ready ;)

A really abused word on this forum to answer to "when question" is "soon"! :-D
In every case I bought my Powermac (Dual 2,5GHz with a tasty 9800XT Mac Edition..) and it's waiting under the desk.

Slight update by Mr. Pampers at http://morphos.pl/423,3134

Google Translates to pretty much what he's just said about 3 posts above this one:-
This time, I instead Bigfoot :) From personal reasons in March was pretty dead month in the development of the port G5. Fortunately, next week BigFoot back to work on the port (and it was really not much to do) and then is we just have to keep our fingers crossed for the intentions as soon as possible MorphOS 3.2 release version;)
