It makes me wonder how sw compatible a G5 port will be and how it will affect the R300 3D driver development.

My personal limited experience with MorphOS on a G5 suggest that compability won't be an issue and that this port is mostly about writing drivers for various devices.

Oh my God! I can't believe what I read! After a lot of reading about discarding this option and go directly to another architecture (ARM/X86) I can't believe this will happen! I'm very happy and excited to the idea. As soon I'll be in better finances i'll give my contribution.

I am curious how much the shipping of the G5 Mac is going to cost. SInce the machine is rather heavy and bulky and as South Africa is a long distance destination, I am afraid it is not going to be cheap.

..but now the question: why the M9747 (Dual G5@2.0GHz) and not the M9749 (Dual G5@2,7GHz) that is the fastest one and the one that Bigfoot owned in the past and where he already showed MorphOS running?

Shipping a 2.5 or 2.7 might also be problematic (leaking liquid-cooling-system) while those at 2.3 and lower only have fans.

Adapting a working version from the 2.0GHz to all other non-PCI-E models should be possible later on (might even work out of the box for some).

The G5 is usermode-compatible with G2/G3/G4, so there're no compatibility problems to expect with running existing MorphOS software. However, some instructions might not suit the G5 too well and are thus executed rather slowly:

Apart from that, the 2.5 GHz model would also be problematic due to missing AGP port, as this would require Radeon R500 (or nVidia) drivers.

woh is very very interesting!!! but i think first than any G5 support, MorphOS need support for vertex shaders for R200 & R300 in this moment.

I'm not mixing anything. I was referring to Kronos' mention of the 2.5 GHz model, which has no AGP port. There is no other 2.5 GHz model than the "late 2005" one.

Wow! This news makes me very happy. I have already sent a message to Pampers telling him that I already own a G5 PowerMac that I can donate to this project.

I can send Mark Olsen (aka Big Foot) a dual 2.0GHz (air cooled) G5 PowerMac and pay for the postage to South Africa almost immediately. I only need to reassemble it, as I had taken it out of it's case, so I could put my dual 2.7GHz G5 PowerMac into the nicer case that the dual 2.0GHz G5 PowerMac had. I had purchased the dual 2.0GHz G5 first, because it was a very good price, then later, I found a dual 2.7GHz G5 model, so I purchased that as well.

I will have to remove some of the RAM from my dual 2.7GHz G5, which I think has 6.5gb of RAM at the moment, and put at least 1gb of RAM back into the dual 2.0GHz G5 PowerMac to test it before shipping it to South Africa.

I also am willing to find another dual 2.7GHz G5 PowerMac to donate and ship to Mark Olsen for this project, to insure that he also supports the fastest G5 PowerMac for this project, if he want the 2.7GHz G5 model, and it is necessary for him to support that model. I think that the models are so similar between the dual 2.0GHz and dual 2.7GHz models, that Mark may not need both models to do the port which will support both of them, but I am happy to find and purchase and ship him a 2nd G5 PowerMac, if that is what it will take to get MorphOS3.x ported to my dual 2.7GHz G5 PowerMac.

With all the great things that happened for me at the 2012 AmiWest Show, and now this news about the potential porting of MorphOS3.x to the G5 PowerMac, I feel like Christmas has come early this year.

This is a great boost for me, just prior to me going into the hospital next Monday for my 2nd back surgery. I can't think of too many things that could have happened in the Amiga world that could have brightened my day more than reading this news. Thank you Pampers and Big Foot!

Edit: Just to make my post even longer and more boring than it already is, I can confirm that there definitely is a dual 2.5GHz G5 PowerMac model with an AGP slot, as I also own one of those, which I purchased for parts and the possibility of repairing, as the motherboard only recognizes one of the two working 2.5GHz G5 CPU's. This will actually work fine as a MorphOS3.x computer, as MorphOS3.x can only recognize one of the two G5 CPU's anyway. I will be sending this G5 to one of the members here soon.

Great (and unexpected) news!

As much as I'm all for jumping architecture sooner rather than later, it seems a good idea to have some 'Power' machines available in the meantime, especially if they are low-hanging fruit.

Safest bet is to wait until it is finished.
