Reports : : 3D gaming on MOS - a comparison

PPCNUX made a little study comparing 3 different MOS-supported gfxcards representing lowend, midrange/entry and current highend choices with all 3 generations of the popular Quake 3D-shooter series.

So the ATI Radeon 9000 Pro is a faster card than the (relatively cheap) 9200 SE that I have ... I already checked that the 9200 SE is quite a bit faster than the 7000, but if I can double the frame rate and the number of OpenGL supported features again, I'll be glad to do so.

What are other gfx cards that will be very very fast and work the Peg2 with current drivers? Is the 9000 Pro the best, or are there more / newer cards that will work in 3D on the Peg2? The ATI web pages talk about a 9600 Pro, a 9700 Pro and an 9800 Pro. Are these bad-ass or no-go cards for the Peg2?

P.S. If you are looking for a 9000 Pro, make sure you get the right one - The ATI web pages say there is a 64MB version and a 128MB version

Yeah, that's cool, but the respective ATI xxxx Pro versions are not mentioned. Are they similar enough to the non-Pro versions to work or not? Apparently that's 'Yes' for the 9000 Pro, but does that also hold for the 9200 Pro?

Looking at this Tech Report, the 9200 Pro seems faster than the 9000 Pro, and the 9100 does double the amount of textures per clock and also has a doubled peak fill rate.

If the Pro versions of the mentioned cards are also working, I guess that would still make the 9100 my first choice, and the 9200 Pro the second choice.

But if more of these cards are working, what are the odds of the 9800 Pro working?

Good luck finding "9200 Pro" cards! :-)

There is an upcoming comparison to the 8500LE (9100 is just a re-released version).

It works in OpenFirmware and that's it - not really usable for MOS.

AFAIK the fastest gfx card that has 3D acceleration on MOS is the Radeon 8500 (128 bit bus, 275/550MHz). The 8500LE/9100 (which are the same card, in spite of an original branding by ATI) are slightly slower. The sad part is none of these cards seems to be available (I find it hard to find one even un the second hand market!) while other models (like 9200 or even the 7000) are still very easy to find.

    Kind regards,
    Andrea
