Development : : Odyssey Web Browser Public Source Code Repository
Posted By: terminills. on 2016/1/8 19:41:39
I would like to invite interested developers from all platforms to join the Odyssey Web Browser development.

The repository is public, available to everyone and located on GitHub: https://github.com/deadwood-pl/OdysseyWebBrowser

The repository contains the latest version of Odyssey (1.25) which:

- is a continuation of Fab's 1.24 code base
- is rebased directly on WebKit engine (no longer uses Orygin proxy layer that 1.24 used) for easier integration of new engine versions
- uses WebKit revision 187682 (end of July version)
- is rebuild to support multi-platform development in build configuration and source code

If you are interested in developing a feature in Odyssey, no matter how small, or fixing a bug, no matter how trivial, contact me via email at deadwood@wp.pl. Don't worry - everybody had to start somewhere! I will help you understand the code base, build process and development approach.

Please spread the news!

Indeed, but as many of us know, trying to combine a career (or *any* kind of paid 8 hour/day work for that matter) with babies or small children, is devastating to any kind of hobby. ;-) Things settles and normalizes after a while, but the first time with a new-born baby can really turn every single aspect of your life completely upside down.

Maybe in a year from now? Or two? No way of knowing, every case is different.

    No pressure Fab!

Besides, personally I hope that any kind of contribution from him towards anything MorphOS related at this point goes towards the x86 migration instead of a single application like Odyssey. After that, endianness in Webkit won't be a problem at all! ;-)

I hope they can find someone willing to fix the javascriptcore. If they can, I bet this will take off.

Fab made it clear that the endianness issue is what blocks the update. Deadwood said he is not interested in fixing it. Same for Kas1e, he is just backporting some bugfixes to 1.23. Back to square one.

I don't think any of them are actively looking for someone to fix the problem, and to be honest it's a bit unrealistic to expect them to do so.

    Actually, he did seem interested:

...until he realized 12 days later that there doesn't seem to be enough general interest:

Sorry, you are right. Not interested anymore would have been more precise. Misinterpreted.

    They may stumble upon one.

Also, I only got the impression that they would set up a bounty, not that Deadwood would fix it. I misunderstood him there.

I do hope he will reconsider so I can throw some money at him :-)

This was only bounty description proposal, he never said that he will step up and take it. I asked deadwood if he is interested in such a bounty but he is not.

Then I misunderstood, as I thought this (and the other one) to be a self-bounty proposal.

So I didn't misunderstand ... I'm all for a bounty anyway since it doesn't have to be NG folks doing it.

You were not the only one. I was hoping that he is proposing self-bounty as well.

I am ready to create a bounty in Bountysource to help with proper cash those who want to start this quest of search and solve all endianess issues.

Unfortunately Bountysource where I registered, automatically calls "issues" directory that must be present on github repository, but seems that Deadwood did not create one.

Must I use another Bounty site in order to avoid this problem that prevents bounty creation?

Can you show me another site to do that?

What information was Deadwood using, or where was he getting his information, that led him to believe that there is not sufficient interest in such a bounty, or the fixing of the endian issue wouldn't be supported by enough users who would fund the bounty? I don't understand his comments, or what he is thinking or feeling about this issue. Is it because he doesn't want to work on it, or because he doesn't think enough people will support his work?

I believe that over 90% of all AmigaOS4.x, MorphOS, and AROS for PPC users would be supportive of this bounty, and as many of that 90% who can afford to donate some money toward it, will do so, which I would guess would equal perhaps 50% to 70% of all users of those OSes would donate some money. I certainly would.

    Just for curiosity.

If the sources of OWB 1.25 are on Github why is there no new release for MorphOS available (last release for MOS is still 1.24)?

Is there somthing incompatible in the new sources that prevents it from compiling it for MOS?

Are the last sources of 1.24 for MOS available too?
Maybe for making an diff between 1.24 MOS and 1.25 AmigaOS.
