MorphOS : : Public Release of MorphOS 3.6
Posted By: ASiegel. on 2014/6/27 19:27:17

The MorphOS development team is proud to announce the immediate availability of MorphOS 3.6. Delivering one of the most requested features, this new version can now utilize the built-in Wi-Fi hardware in all Apple systems that feature Broadcom´s BCM43 chipset. In addition, MorphOS further extends its support of graphics chipsets to include AMD´s R400 series by adding compatibility with Radeon X800 PRO and FireGL X3 cards. Moreover, the latest version of MorphOS now enables laptop owners to define custom screen modes and provides default modes for increasingly common high resolution displays.

Improving interoperability and overall convenience, MorphOS 3.6 adds a new SMBFS filesystem handler with 64-bit I/O support for easy file sharing via network storage devices, a new VNC server to control your MorphOS systems remotely or even without a display, and a Synergy client for sharing a nearby mouse and keyboard with any Linux, MacOS or Windows machine that is part of your local network and acts as a Synergy server.

As usual, MorphOS 3.6 includes many more improvements and bug fixes. For a more complete list of all changes, please read our MorphOS 3.6 release notes.

We strongly urge new users to carefully read our installation and troubleshooting guides before they attempt to install MorphOS for the first time. Existing users can upgrade via the familiar procedure but are encouraged to read the guides as well. MorphOS 3.6 is available for download in our files section.

From quickly browsing through the release notes: Great release, with *many* improvements! :-)

(It has been hinted that this release would include Sam 460 support, but it looks like it doesn't? Has that been postponed, or scrapped altogether?)
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)
MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

Also (to anticipate a great deal of forthcoming comments and posts on various forums in a short future): Where can I download "Pack Chrysalis 3.6.1"? It should have been here yesterday, dammit! ;-) :-P

Great news! I have already updated MorphOS 3.5 to 3.6 on my PowerBookG4. Internal WiFi works well and I can throw out my TP-LINK WiFi PCMCIA card. :) Now Monitors are available in System Preferences.
Thank you MorphOS Team! Very good job.

Also meant to say that I really appreciate the included (thus MorphOS official) version bump of Odyssey to version 1.23! This raises the least common denominator of web browsing in MorpOS to a *recent* level! :-) Which is great! :-D

I couldn't get samba sharing working between my QNap NAS and MorphOS using smbfs. Before this update, that is.

Seems to work now. Great work!

Update went smooth so far on powerbook and mini. I am particularly pleased that the switch from the Atheros to Airport WLAN adapter went smooth (no need to type in the cryptic WPA2 password). Looks nice so far, albeit the Atheros card seemes to be faster - better or better positioned antenna?

The stack waits until WiFi link is up, but perhaps DHCP fails due to bad signal, etc. To workaround, use a static IP.

AMD´s R400 series by adding compatibility with Radeon X800 PRO and FireGL X3 cards

I think, its the first step to Sam :)

That should probably read "Radeon X800XT and flashed FireGL X3 cards".
And it would not surprise me if Frank and Mark had considered this long before the SAM460 project was announced.
While there are R400 cards that would work in a SAM, as I recall that the first card Frank mentioned using with the SAM was an R500 card (an X1300).

So, as always, future releases are likely to continue to offer unexpected pleasant surprises.

Wi-Fi works rock stable between my PB5.9 and ASUS RT-N16 (via WPA2). I will check same with MM1.5 and TP-link 3020 later.
But i missing one more thing - on 3.5 works my Apple Mighty Mouse (but scrolling ball not working) - on 3.6 now MM is not works :( Or i need some Poseidon configuration kung-fu?

iBook here. Update went fine, 'Network' prefs finds the wifi card, but only cycles between red and yellow light next to my selected network after entering password. Can't tell if this is a supported wifi model or not.

    TJH

edit: Should add this is a demo version on this machine. Clean install.

Have you tried temporarily disabling the password protection of your network? Does this help in any way?

Atheros 5000 chipset based PCMCIA and PCI cards (USB versions are not supported)

Why do you not take atheros based pci card ?

Does MorphOS really run on this machine? So far, only AGP-based G4 PowerMacs have been supported to my knowledge.

    > which airport card should I buy that will work with the current MorphOS update?

I guess you are better off with a PCI card based on Atheros 5000 chipset, which has been supported since MorphOS 3.2, than with AirPort Extreme.

    Edit: pegasos-sigi2 was faster

One thing I noticed about SMBFS right away is that I no longer have a limitation as to how far I am able to go into subdirectories. In 3.5 I couldnt recurse too far into subdirectories for some reason so I had to move what I wanted on my NAS to a higher level.

Now..it works like I want. That in itself is awesome.

    Fantastic work as always team!

I can finally lose a long ethernet cable that went across my room to my morphos mini. Wifi is working great, in fact it's faster than using ethernet for me, I was plagued by the old sungem bug and often got stuttering or timeouts. Working much nicer now.

A PCMCIA card would need a PCMCIA slot. Does your PowerMac really have one?

Yet again we get an amazing update packed full of features, it's well worth the hundred quid licence fee.

I've been testing the Broadcom driver under MOS 3.5 for a while and it's been rock solid, I haven't encountered a single bug to report it's that good.

Thanks to all the team who made this release happen! :pint:

Thanks to all the MorphOS team and testers for this latest release, it's installed OK for me on my Mac Mini 1.5GHz. I just need to get a wireless/Ethernet Broadband router now to make the most of the update, and then I'm going to get one of my Powerbooks registered.

It sure looks like one, but it isn't.

Are these Broadcom wifi drivers official, or initiated the same way as linux did, using similar B43 fw-cutter approach, loading proprietary firmware into the chip ?

If not official, wouldnt this touch some legal questions as the firmware from the binary drivers is copyright to Broadcom Corporation and Morphos isnt a free product ?

Seems to be working well, and my iBook is now usable! Maybe I should register it???

Anyway, just one thing, I can't get the wirless to work on my Macmini 1.5, should it work?

If it has the optional AirPort Extreme module, then yes. If it hasn't, then no.

If it's an "official unofficial" 1.5GHz model (== not overclocked), then it has come with Airport from the factory and it should work, although what I've noticed, signal quality isn't the best at least from some distance under table etc ;)

What's the problem exactly? Does it offer you the wl0 device in network prefs at all? Or can't you see your router? Or can't make connection to it?

You're right, AirPort Extreme was not optional with the stock 1.5 (and 1.33) GHz silent upgrade models.

Even if it were a normal PCMCIA slot, it is 16-bit and Atheros cards are 32-bit.

It see it, I can connect to it, it sometimes turn green, but then cycles the colours, I think I've got one ping back from the router, and that's it.

I'll have another go at the settings sometime..

MorphOS 3.6 goes in smooth except for OWB. OWB 1.23 and 1.24 both still refuse to download from some sites. as I mentioned in the last update and the OWB bug forum.I'm still getting a small html file that's named the same thing as what I'm suppose to be downloading. So it's back to 1.20 for me.
The page I get reads as with site name removed:
