Internet : : 500 Archives on MorphOS Files
Posted By: Krashan. on 2012/2/11 10:41:17
Today, the MorphOS Files repository, also available as MorphZone downloads section, reached 500 archives stored – over a gigabyte of MorphOS software. During its almost 3 years history it served over 93 thousands downloads with total traffic of 350 GB. Now it is not only used directly, but also serves as one of Grunch sources. It is also worth noting, a complete mirror of MorphOS Files is available at files.morphos.pl in case of any problems.

It would be more, except that the maintainer of that repository seems to hate anything that won't run on a bog-standard stock MorphOS box.

It would be like if Aminet said "We will only accept your uploads if the software will run in 256K on OS1.0."

Ah well, your loss not mine. Aminet has a much more complete archive of MorphOS software (approx. 1231 files), I suggest going there instead.

You have been misinformed. The only rule is that 3-rd party components needed to run a program should be freely available. I guess you refer to the case of AmiArcadia, which requires files copied from AmigaOS 3.9 to run. I'm sorry to inform you, the policy won't change.

Aminet has a much more complete archive of MorphOS software (approx. 1231 files)

Guess how many of them are outdated, duplicates, no more working, restricted in distribution to Aminet only or replaced with system components. And then for the rest - you can help by submitting them via submit form on MorphOS Files. If you prefer to complain instead it is "your loss, not mine".

That's one example, but not the only one.
According to your logic, if I released, for example, a patch to improve the compatibility of Deluxe Paint, AmigaBASIC, or some other similar program, it couldn't go in your archive because it would require you to (shock horror) actually own the product in question before it would be useful. That's the kind of pretentious hatred of commercial software that I would expect from a Linux zealot, it seems odd in the MorphOS community. Also, you are a hypocrite because you don't consistently follow your own policy. Eg. there are many entries in the "Games" section which require additional files from commercial software to run. Eg. Homeworld, Quake 2, Raw, Doom, etc. You can't have it both ways. At the file submission page (http://www.morphos-files.net/submit.php) there is no mention of this rule, I suspect you have just made this rule up for me.

    >And then for the rest - you can help by submitting them via submit form on MorphOS Files. If you prefer to complain instead it is your loss, not mine.

Not really, as I don't even run MorphOS. Why don't you submit them yourself?

No, it is according to your logic, and this logic is broken. In case of a patch on an application, this application is for sure not a "component". And BTW how do you run Deluxe Paint on MorphOS? Oh, you do not run MorphOS ;-).

That's the kind of pretentious hatred of commercial software that I would expect from a Linux zealot

I guess you should put some constraints on your uninhibited imagination.

Not really, as I don't even run MorphOS.

So why do you care? Need some trolling exercises? Go away in peace.

Why don't you submit them yourself?

You may be sure I will do it incrementally.

I've dumped a list of all these 1231 Aminet files for MorphOS into a text file. Then I've performed the first elimination pass removing:
    - evident duplicates or older versions of the same program,
    - files, which I've remembered are on MorphOS Files already,
    - programs and components later included into MorphOS install,
    - programs known to be not working.
158 archives were dropped this way, leaving 1073 on the list. The next pass will be systematic check against MorphOS Files contents.

That was exactly my point: the scenario whereby someone created a compatibility patch for it so that it would run properly.

    >So why do you care?

I care about MorphOS users, I am just saying that it doesn't affect me personally, as I am not a MOS user myself.

You also obviously have no answer to the following:

"You don't consistently follow your own policy. Eg. there are many entries in the "Games" section which require additional files from commercial software to run. Eg. I think the best soultion would be if I just add AmiArcadia and other your ClassAct programs to MorphOS Files, just stating in description they require AmigaOS 3.9 ClassAct to run and as such are unconfirmed to work on MorphOS.

Did another pass over Aminet files. 228 archives have been found on MorphOS Files already (often in a newer version), hence dropped from the list. 845 left still. They will be succesfully reviewed in the incoming years.

That sounds like a good idea. They have been confirmed to work on MorphOS as they have been tested by the porter (at least). Thanks.
