Software : : Virtual Grand Prix 2 on Aminet

The Aminet team contacted Paolo "The Alien" Cattani and were granted the permission to host and redistribute the MorphOS version of Virtual Grand Prix 2.

If you enjoy this game, please consider making a Paypal donation to: donations@virtualgrandprix2.com

When discussing the Aminet upload with the Aminet team, Mr. Cattani pointed out that even a MorphOS port of VGP3 might be considered, but that he's not promising anything and that "there are some technical issues about that".

For high resolution textures that significantly improve the looks of Virtual Grand Prix 2, have a look at Jason Frabotta's VGPHD project: http://www.siniscope.com/vgphd/

Any reason that this wont run on a 1.25 mac mini?. I get a black screen then it just returns to the desktop.

    Not enough graphics ram?

    @Spihunter:
VGP2 works just fine on my 1.2 Mac mini. In fact, it's much faster than on my Pegasos 2. So i doubt it's a problem with too few vmem.

I am 99% confident that it depends on the zip you used to extract the Base archive: there is a very common MorphOS version of zip/unzip that do not preserve the protection bits.
So, just try this: open a Shell and go to the VGP2 directory. Type " protect #? +rwed all " and retry running VGP2. You should succeed.

BTW, Virtual Grand Prix 3 is even better and would be an awesome achievement for MorphOS. What users can do to "help" with the port is donate for VGP2 - I hope you'll agree it deserves some positive feedback. If I remember correctly, Paolo suggested a 5.90 Euro donation if the user appreciate this MorphOS version, which is really a low fee for a commercial level game (remember: when the MorphOS version was released VGP2 was sold commercially for Win and OSX).
Talking with Paolo, he said one of the biggest technical problems with the port of VGP3 is that it really requires a 1.5GHz CPU and some VRAM, so, at the moment, only the best minis seem to be up to the task. I am pretty sure that PowerBooks with 1.5/1.67GHz G4s and Radeons 9700 with 128 MB of VRAM would cope with it quite nicely, though - and on the other hand MorphOS would gain a software that makes use of the highest end machines ;-)

    Kind regards,
    Andrea

    Hey Thanks Andrea,

I unzipped it on my Macbook so I'll try your suggestion and see if that does the trick! Thanks!

anyone else noticed how sluggish and hiccuped it gets when you use HD textures ? limited by the 64mb vram ? (mc mini 1,5 ghz here)

Yes, you are indeed limited by the VRAM. Just check this: the HD version of the Barcelona circuit is 87MB alone. You have to keep in the VRAM also the textures for the cars (if you have updated to the HD version it's another 24MB, more or less), the screen buffer and maybe also the Ambient screen (don't know if this is true). Guess what? There will be a lot of swapping between RAM and VRAM, and consider yourself lucky, since on the mini you have an AGP4x interface: on the Peg2 it is slower, the game actually pauses for some instants every now and then. So I suggest to use the SD sets (medium quality) and sometimes even the LD - low quality but still a lot nicer than the originals!

That's why I laugh every time I read that we don't need faster/better specced machines because MorphOS/AmigaOS are fast OSes: because the OS may be as fast and ligtweighted as you can make, but if you want to run decent modern software you need the horsepower! If we are stuck with the Efika we'll never see any VGP3, not the other way round (we won't have any VGP3 so it makes sense to stay with a G2 without L2 cache, for instance...).

    Kind regards,
    Andrea

    Spihunter,

Forgive me if I am insulting your intelligence with this one but the other issue could be that you extracted the archives and neglected to put the MOS VGP2 executable in the same directory as the "base archive" ? Doing so would have the black screen/back to desktop result as well.

I donated little more than originally asked... hope you others will do some donations too and ask for VGP3 ;) It would be really cool to have it too. But anyway, VGP2 surely rules with USB wheel controller :)
