Software : : Origyn Web Browser 1.6 and Flash Plug-In (swfdec)
Posted By: ASiegel. on 2009/12/11 20:13:45

Origyn Web Browser 1.6 and Flash Plug-In (swfdec)Fabien Coeurjoly has just released version 1.6 of his port of OWB. He has also released the first public version of a compatible Flash plug-in (swfdec).

Translators: Please update your translations, the developer will supply the locale archive separately.

Note: There's a known regression since r1106 (or so): maps.google.* is slightly broken (some options / buttons don't have any effect). It is a generic issue in WebKit when JIT is disabled, and it was reported to their bugtracker. Fabien will provide a new version when this is fixed.

Download Links: OWB v1.6 Full Version - Lite Edition Without SVG Support - Flash Plug In

  • Updated to OWB SVN r1158.
  • Added a GUI for content blocking (windows->content blocking). Regular expressions are accepted, and entries can either be white or blacklisted.
  • Added "Block images from <linked domain>" context menu item for pictures.
  • Save and restore the list of downloaded/finished/failed files (optional).
  • Sessions now also restore scroll offset in pages.
  •  Added support for external transfer animations:
+ PROGDIR:resource/transferanim.png and PROGDIR:resource/transferanim_tab.png will be used if they exist.
+ The expect format is a 32bits PNG with square frames (horizontal layout). The rate is set to 30ms per frame.
  • Enabled user stylesheet. PROGDIR:resource/userStyleSheet.css will be used if it exists. This user stylesheet allows changing default form controls look, for instance (amongst many other things).
  • Reworked history popup list to show favicons (optionally), title and url on 2 lines.
  • Reworked network activity window to show a more precise state (connecting/waiting/current progress).
  • Network activity leds now show different colours depending on connection state.
  • Added favicons settings to configure the categories favicons should be displayed in (tabs/history/bookmarks/...).
  • Added a few more tweaks in mimetype system to fallback to download action if no proper mimetype is sent (or configured).
  • Added BACK and FORWARD REXX commands.
  • Added GETURL to retrieve active browser URL (stored in RESULT).
  • Added AS/K option to SAVEURL REXX command, to choose the target file path.
  • Added more up-to-date user agents in spoof settings.
  • Don't change active tab after closing an inactive tab.
  • Bookmark groups can now also be added to quicklinks. In that case, a popup menu will display group entries.
  • Allowed editing builtin mimetypes attributes, such as text/html and co (but think twice when modifying them, of course).
  • Middle clicking an entry in history or bookmark now opens the link in a new tab.
  • "Copy Image" context menu item now copies the actual image content to clipboard, instead of its URL.
  • Many fixes in the new cookie system (thanks sszymczy).
  • Fixed some left mouse button event issue that could cause trouble on googledocs or fckeditor toolbars (thx sszymczy).
  • Fixed a focus issue with frames.
  • Fixed a potential race in WebKit with plugins and stream disposal.
  • Fixed ftp:// listings so that they are browsable.
  • Fixed the "rewind" error message that could occur during file upload in some cases.
  • Fixed Acid3 test 97.
  • Fixed "Paste" to work in rich text editors (such as googledocs).
  • Fixed a bug with "Cut" function.

Only thing I'd like to ask for are "Go" buttons for url and search bars, otherwise....just awesome!

"Only thing I'd like to ask for are "Go" buttons for url and search bars, otherwise....just awesome!"

i've already asked for this a long time ago. you can use "paste to url" from the menu, but its not the same.
i vote for those go's! fab you hear?:)

autofilling is quite intrusive and tricky, too

    @vulture
what do you mean with search bars? There are aminet/google search bars, or text find too, if that's what you mean.

he means a go button next to the search bar so you dont have to use the kb when you copypasted something into the search bar just press the go with mouse. same for url bar.

What saddam said. What would be even better is if you also added to right click menu a "Paste and Go" entry a la Opera, which will paste the copied string and "virtually" press enter as well. One last thing that I can think of, could it be optional that close gadgets are placed at the right side of tabs? If for example someone has opened several images at different tabs it'd be easier to close them afterwards as they'd be closer to one another, considering that you'd not want to close the first tabs (from the left), so you'd start closing from the right. That's probably too weird to ask, but some ppl (like me) find it useful. That's if it's not much work of course. Anyway, Fab, your OWB rocks!

A configurable search gadget (a user can add own entries) would be nice (like in IBrowse).

Also could the window close gadget close the active tab, and ask to close owb if there is only one tab (like in IBrowse)?

And drag'n'drop sortable quicklinks would be very cool;)

Autofill might come, but it needs quite some work.

    @Igracki

Configurable search engines was actually planned for this release, but i deferred it.
About quicklinks, you can already sort them by dragndrop in bookmark window in the right list.

Not sure about the reason, but it's very easy to swap that. That said, everywhere else in the OS, close gadget is on the left. :)

    Oh, thanks!!!
On every update OWB become better and better!
The flash feature is in experimental state (I've read the "Readne" :-)) so...
    it has the "youthness defects".
    But this browser is superb!!!
I'm going to translate the ".cd" ;)

    Thanks Fab, great work!

Could you maybe change the shortcut behaviour of rcommand-b from "bookmarks" to "back" (or even better: configurable) like in Ibrowse instead of ralt-left?

Awesome work and incredible continued progress. Thanks is not enough.

One question, is the download speed from your site, which for this 14.7mb download fluctuated wildly between 512B/sec and 27.0kB/sec likely to be an effect of your server's performance, too much traffic on your server to download this latest release, or my G4 MacMini's Ethernet connection performance (or lack thereof)?

It's the part of the bandwidth-exchange politic of his free.fr web-hosting service: they slowdown transfers to many other ISPs unless some money is paid or something.

Well, check if you can find a reproducible way to crash it.

Now, if it's related to Flash, be aware that stuff is quite experimental (not the plugin itself, but swfdec), so I'd suggest disabling 'autostart' so that you start only the flash content you really want to see (and that way it avoids getting all silly flash ads too :)).

Do you mean autocompletion in URL box? That's something I'd love. Autocompletion in forms is, in my point of view, plainly sick. Not to mention remembering passwords...

Well, password remembering is already available (as an option) and url completion also is in two modes (as an option too). But the whole form completion isn't yet (only used for login/password at the moment).

Then you can argue it's sick or not. It's optional anyway. :)

Has anyone besides me noticed anything strange about the OWB compass graphic used with this news announcement. Look at the lettering and it's orientation inside the compass face.

I added this option because it was requested (ibrowse also implements it). And about security and MorphOS, well, you said it. It's a joke too. Though you can always store your passwords and stuff to an encrypted partition with kryptos. :)

It looks great but the program keeps crashing. I'm guessing it is due to the lack of ram in the Efika. Hopefully I will have better luck when I install morph on my mac mini.

About quicklinks, you can already sort them by dragndrop in bookmark window in the right list.

I know but it would be easier to drag-drop-sort them within the quicklink area;), could you then maybe make it possible to drag a new quicklink at a specific position?
Currently, newly added quicklinks are added at the end...
And while your with drag-drop-sort, why not having the quicklink-popuplist entries, be draggable to the newtab button...

And please could you allow dragging tabs to the quicklink area to make the active tab a quicklink? (maybe also drag/drop sort of tabs, like in ibrowse...:-)

Also please allow quicklinks w/o a name being displayed (no adding of "(no name)" in this case!). But then the quicklink listview needs a displayed name, which is only displayed in the listview not in the quicklink button...
So one could only have the favicon as quicklink button, its enough in many cases!

It's probably possible, yes. I'll see.

In fact, it's enabled, but it's not working because of some bug/limitation in current pagegroup/titleobject implementation in MUI. When it's fixed, i'll have this kind of things working.

Yes, in favicon mode, maybe i'll allow that, indeed.

Well, efika is certainly limited with OWB. Anyway, it's easy to say if it's a lack of memory. If OWB runs out of memory it displays a requester telling WebKit authors should check their allocations, basically. Do you get that requester? :)

I have had three different things happen. 1. The whole computer locks up. 2) A requester telling me "WebKit authors should check their allocations". 3) The window starts showing fragments of the desktop and won't refresh which forces me to quit the program. This happens to me with both the full and the lite version of 1.6 and 1.6.1. I can browse one or two pages before this happens. Normally the default home page and then morphzone.

I lowered my screen resolution and it seems more stable. The only issue I'm now having is gmail seems to kill OWB on my efika. I blame google.

Ok, interesting. I'll give it a try by limiting myself to 128MB and see how it behaves with gmail. But gmail certainly eats lots of memory anyway.

    @Golem,

What I meant is that it read backwards "BWO" instead of OWB, unless you come from a country where they read right to left, but then the letters and language would be different too.

With the current design you get the W in the position for West which I expect is the reason why it is that way.
