MorphZone : : New Downloads Section
Posted By: ASiegel. on 2009/12/6 17:25:51
New Downloads SectionThe MorphZone Team is proud to announce that MorphZone.org has now a new and improved downloads section.

The new downloads section integrates the well-established MorphOS Files software repository and makes its extensive content more easily available to all MorphZone visitors.‏ A big thanks to Grzegorz 'krashan' Kraszewski who spend a lot of time adapting the site engine behind MorphOS Files to enable a seamless integration into the MorphZone user interface.

You can access the download section via the top navigation menu. (Some of the files that used to be found in the old MorphZone download module will be moved to MorphOS Files in the days ahead.)

It looks really good! A bit slow though, but that's probably a network thing...?

    Very nice! :-)
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)
MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

I've downloaded MPlayer (10 MB) just for test. Average download speed has been 820 kB/s. Not that slow IMHO...

Looks broken in this vanilla Internet Explorer 7. The elements for searching get drawn over the categories list, while there's a big blank space on the left of it. Problems with absolute positioning of elements?

The problem is in the IE7 rendering engine which is incompatible with the official web standards.
IE8 complies to a larger degree to these standards so it displays the website reasonably well (unless you enable IE8's "classic" viewing mode which deliberately breaks standards to stay compatible with older websites designed for IE7 and below).

So, if possible, I would suggest you upgrade to IE8 or switch to another browser entirely (and / or suggest this to your administrator if it is a work computer).

I am sure you will understand that we do not plan to invest any time on making sure the website looks perfect when displayed by outdated Microsoft browsers.

This "replycomment.php" doesn't have the "quote" function that is available when replying to a forum thread (instead that a news item like this). So I wuote manually:

I feared that answer. In which exact situation it does behave differently, thus only the download index renders wrong?
But I think it would be very easy to adapt the new downloads entry page, so it renders well. It looks as if the searching elements are inside an absolute positioned container, which gets drawn in the wrong place. Alright, it might be IE7 to blame but, why isn't a regular table used then, so it would work in any condition? I haven't looked at the source HTML, so I might be wrong.

Feel free to do your own online research about what "odditities" the IE7 rendering engine features. I would think they are too many to be remembered by a single person.

The main difference between the download front-end found on MorphZone and the default MorphOS Files user interface is that a different CSS file is loaded depending on what URL is used to access the repository.

That does not quite work if everything sits in hardcoded HTML tables...

It is possible to make this site IE7 friendly but I know myself how much work you have to do to make it done. I think it's useless, IE should be banned and forgotten :)

MSIE8 causes no problems, even with its "incompatibility" mode :-)

Why using MSIE7 since there's MSIE8 already. I guess it is possible to upgrade...

Terrific site BTW - and how needed! I scanned the original version last week already, quickly found what I wanted. It does provide a human-friendly interface and presents quite an order, as compared to this aminet ancient library.

Though, I suppose, some demoed versions of proprietary software should be placed there as well (unless of course forbidden by the vendors). I mean CUBIC IDE in particular, gotta buy it this week and almost seem to have forgotten this software, until the special offer came up as aw.net news.

What about a "server tools" section, with apache, orangeftpd, etc? It might be nice to keep latest versions on servers...

Hint: there is a link to submit files to the repository. You need not to be an autor/porter of an application to submit it.

Very clever! So, actually, MorphZone's downloads section is Krashan's site! I didn't notice, because the URL ("http://www.morphzone.org/downloads/") actually redirects to "http://morphzone.morphos-files.ppa.pl/categories.php". Well, Grzegorz had originally suggested to just use RSS feeds for displaying the content of MorphOS Files on MorphZone, which would have certainly been a 'cleaner' solution in the sense that he would not have had to add any special code specifically for MorphZone (and not used by the main front-end).

But now we have a working site search and upload feature using the MZ theme which probably would not have been the case if the road labelled RSS had been taken.

Using downloads.morphzone.org instead of the current URL would be nicer perhaps, but, without going into detail, getting subdomains set up would be a major pain in this particular case so this is no priority for now and will perhaps be dealt with later.
