The Desert Racing of BarDos port MorphOS has been released today. The port is a direct port of the original version and is available at APC&TCP and other dealers. There is an up-to-date demo version of Desert Racing of BarDos for the classic Amiga, AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS, which can be found at the support site: http://www.apc-tcp.de/support/0020.php .

This port has been tested for over 6 months on various systems. We ask all users interested to download and try out the demo version first, before buying, we feel sure you will enjoy it.

Warning: The game does not run on Efika.

Warning: You can kiss my Efika's... royal pinky ring.

Just for curiosity: Why does this awesome game refuse to run on my poor Efi?

I could not get past high score table. I entered my name and pressed enter but nothing happened. It looks like it got stuck there.

But real problem is 320x240x8 graphics. When you have got 24" LCD it does not look pretty...

Contrary to what the news item extensively claims there is no port of that game to MorphOS (or OS4) but just an m68k version that runs on these systems.

    From the readme:

"To start the game on OS4 or MorphOs, please choose only the File: DesertRacing_CXBERGFX-NG. All other Files are Originalfiles for 68k and WinUAE and
dont work with the new OS'es."

So, at least, there's a separate executable for the game (dated just three days ago).

"The Jpeg.library is necassary, you can found it on OS4depot or in Aminet"

Can anybody here confirm this requirement?

Yes, but that doesn't classify as a MorphOS or OS4 port in my book. Being written in AmiBlitz, there's only m68k executable possible. The fact that there's only one single executable for both MorphOS and OS4 illustrates quite well that it can't be native.
Does DesertRacing_CYBERGFX-NG run on OS3 as well?

What has the code type to do with 'port or not port'? You can make a program which *only* runs on MorphOS and use 680x0 code. I sometimes use 680x0 code in my MorphOS programs; does that make them less MorphOS native? :)

Yes, I think so. In my humble opinion real "native" means both compiled for the hardware CPU and coded for the OS API. You'll see what I mean should MorphOS switch to a little endian CPU (where transparent m68k emulation isn't possible) one time ;-)

still.. porting something to a system does not equal to making it 'native'. It's two different things (which often come together, of course; but don't have to).

So speaking of a 'port' or 'porting work' in this context is just fine; it would be wrong to speak of a 'native port', of course.

Interesting read, I have to agree with both Andreas and Christian. By the way, where exactly are you using 68k code in your programs? And why that choice? It seems a bit strange, relying on Trance's emulation while you are able to code in assembler yourself.

i guess, the only problem is, that there are some compilers that still don't support powerpc cpus? and well, for me, i don't see it as a real issue to use 68k tools, when it really doesn't go so slow...

    bye, MarK.

ps: would be great, if more of these games would be made morphos compatible!!!

It's funny. First the discussion was about a "port" then all of a sudden a different word is being used without explanation and it's about "native." Words got conflated. In other words I detect the presence of Andreas Wolf.

Like Tokai said "port" is different from "native." I don't think APC-TCP ever claimed it was native.

The press release seems perfectly accurate to me. They took the classic Amiga version and changed it to make a version that'd run on MorphOS. That qualifies as a port. I think the press release is correct.
