Software : : Origyn Web Browser v1.2
Posted By: ASiegel. on 2009/4/16 7:16:11

Origyn Web Browser v1.2Fabien "Fab" Coeurjoly has updated his MorphOS port of the Origyn Web Browser. This web browser is based on the powerful WebKit engine which is also used by Apple's Safari or Google's Chrome.

Version 1.2 is available in three editions, namely the full browser (owb-morphos-1.2.lha), a version without SVG support (owb-morphos-1.2-nosvg.lha) and "OWB Lite" which excludes support for SVG and for codepages other than UTF-8 and Latin-1. The two extra editions are primarily intented to be used on systems that feature only low amounts of memory (Efika).

System requirements:‏
MorphOS 2.x is strongly recommended but it can still work on a 1.4.x setup if a recent MUI snapshot (2007) is installed. The full browser requires about 5MB of disk space and at least 35MB of free system memory. (The No-SVG and Lite editions of OWB may require different amounts of disk space and system memory.)

The developer made the following changes::
  • Updated to OWB SVN r884 (08.03.2009).
  • Updated to Curl 7.19.3.
  • Substancially increased scrolling speed in some cases.
  • Reduced a lot CPU usage in some cases (i.e MorphZone forum when replying).
  • Added authentication window (not all protocols are handled yet).
  • Added history loading/saving with max age/max entries settings.
  • Added support for visited links marking.
  • Added URL completion: string and/or popup completion modes are available (and optional).
  • Added console window (displaying JavaScript error messages amongst others).
  • Added "Save as HTML" menu entry.
  • Added cache model and page cache settings.
  • Added "New Tab" button.
  • Added context menu actions to tab titles.
  • Added context menu in downloaded entries list to open file/directory with Ambient.
  • Added loading transfer anim in tabs (optional).
  • Added "SAVEURL URL/A" rexx command (downloads passed URL to download directory).
  • Allow Euro symbol input in forms.
  • Send "Accept-Language" http header set with system preferred languages.
  • Implemented JavaScript prompt request.
  • Enabled "Resizable TextArea" webkit option.
  • Made tab-cycling work properly for the whole browser window (it was only working inside the page content before).
  • Remember last opened file path during session.
  • Began implementing plugin interface (nothing to see yet, except plugin placeholder).
  • Unescape downloaded file names.
  • Protected tab and status labels against MUI escape-sequences abuses.
  • URL filecomment wasn't written correctly when downloading to a SFS partition.
  • Bookmarks menuitems are now updated in realtime too.
  • QuickLink group reworked and (hopefully) fixed for pre-2.x MUI versions. It also offers more layout options.
  • Don't move downloaded entry to finished tab in case current size is greater than advertised file size (which can happen with on-the-fly gzip unpacking).
  • Fixed some issues with window/tab titles sometimes showing wrong label.
  • Cosmetics here and there in the GUI.
  • Use shared jpeg and png libraries.
Download it here.

Seeing that Fab has started working on a plugin system, I bet many of us are thinking about (evil!) Flash support. How good are current open source (gnash?) efforts?

    Thanks.

About plugin stuff, this is mostly for evaluation at the moment. While a simple skeleton plugin might not be too hard to write, a plugin like flash or video is an entirely different story, so don't hold your breath too much in any case. :)

Works well... I give it two thumbs UP!!
With v1.1 I have stopped using my PC for 99% of my Internet usage.
Paypal, Ebay ect... I am able to use with OWB... although with the last version had minor issues with starting an auction... Soon I won't use my pc at all :-)

Of course, that's understood, Fab. Mostly, when we talk about a plugin that must support user interaction.

Thanks again Fab for all your hard work! Original OWB developers must be very impressed with your version, as MorphOS is not yet-another-Linux-framework.

using the thing now, very impressive. Pages rendering is truly amazing, never seen on any amiga OS before.
no more shame when demonstrating MorphOS to "outsiders", trying to avoid the web related questions ;-) MorphOS is finally back from the web early ages and ready for the future with such apps. The same shock that Sputnik made us feel when it popped out.

even more amazing when you know the humbleness and availability of the man.
big up Fab, i truly consider you as a bloody talented and generous. coder.

Fab doesn't dare accept any reward - not with special money investigator ssolie lurking around ;-)
Joking aside, OWB really is a fine piece of work worthy of reward.

i get a massage failed writing to disk(in the owb requester, not sfs)
Strange, any idea what causes this?

Great, great work! I wish there was an entry in the context menu to open in inactive tab like IBrowse and Opera. Awsome work Fab! Many thanks!

It's 4am and I have not slept yet or I would load it on my Efika to test right now. I will sleep for a few hours and try to install version 2.2 of MorphOS when I wake up in a few hours, then install Fab's port of OWB.

Thanks for your continued support of the greatest Amiga-Like OS on the planet Earth Fab!

I agree :-) I already suggested that to Fab at the time of the first OWB release for MorphOS.

MPlayer plugin should handle Flash Video aswell, am I right?

    Skipp,

yes, but in practice it would be useless, because what you see on youtube and other video portals is never a direct link to flv but a flash application (with controls & other stuff) that streams itself the flv. So no way a video plugin would handle that.

Hmm, I am wondering, how is this implemented in, for example, Android (Google Phone), as it can play the YouTube (and Metacafe, etc.) videos WITHOUT the Adobe Flash (which is non-existent on Android at the moment)? Although, the videos, for example on Facebook or Vimeo aren't recognized as videos, but as a SWF with a missing plugin.

    Where lies the difference then?

If it's not using any kind of flash plugin, then it "cheats" by fetching the actual flv link (like getvideo and tubexx rexx scripts do on morphos/amigaos) and passing it to some video plugin.

If that's indeed what it does, you can easily notice it, because you probably won't see the embedded youtube controls/option in the video area.

Of course that method is only a workaround and only works if the video portals don't change too much their way to store/retrieve the actual video files.

IF that way would work with your port (+ plugin system), I can't see why we shouldn't try that :-) Because I think the most people want the Flash Plugin ONLY to watch tons of videos on so many sites around the globe - and not to get annoyed with animated SWF banners... But maybe I'm wrong - whaddaya think ppl? :-)

Because that would mean making a web browser with SPECIFIC support for CERTAIN web pages. It's sad. It's even worse that the whole Flash sttuation, which consists in everybody having to support their "de facto" stardard, which is closed source.
That's not what the World Wide Web was supposed to be.

I hear what you're saying, jcmarcos, but we simply can't change the world.. I think we could "go with the flow" and implement something like Greasemonkey (http://www.greasespot.net/) and its scripts, to allow mplayer-plugin to fetch and play FLV videos embedded on YouTube, and others... It works on Linux Firefox without Flash plugin installed.

Furthermore, there are scripts that, for example, allow direct downloading of embedded videos, which otherwise would be difficult to get.

I'm not saying it's the perfect way, but a workaround which allow the users to give the finger to closed-source Flash.

Arg, not this silly benchmark again. Its variance makes it totally worthless.

Funnily, I get an opposite figure on a peg2/g4:
    on MorphOS, i get 230 and on OS4.1 i got 181.

(both tests using the same window size, which is important, as this test depends on that, as well as on moon phase)

I don't know how hard or easy that is, but would it be possible to have opensearch or sherlock support to add search engines ala IBrowse? Or, at least, could we get a wikipedia search engine in addition to google and aminet?

While I agree that Benchmarks never tell the whole story and can be massaged much like statistics these are the results I obtained running the Peacekeeper benchmark on various flavours of OWB

    Pegasos II (1 GHz)
OWB 1.2 - 164 (MorphOS) Note: The final results table not layed out correctly
    OWB 3.12 - 189 (AmigaOS4.1)

    A1 (800Mhz)
    OWB 3.12 - 157 (AmigaOS4.1)

    SAM440EP (667MHz)
    OWB 3.12 - 54

    TrevorD

PS I've got to admit I'm very impressed with the development these browers. Well done to all involved.
