Posted By: ASiegel. on 2009/3/15 1:57:10
After a long period of silent development, a new version of Scalos, an alternative to the Ambient desktop of MorphOS, is now available. In addition to many bugfixes and language packs for French and German, it also includes improvements such as transparent windows or video thumbnails.

    Never. It's side project, and more it's not important! ;)

    How do video thumbnails work, Fab? Does it rely on some Reggae component not fully available yet? Or do you have, somehow, embedded some part of MPlayer into your own ambient version? And then... How come that Scalos can do it?

    Video thumbnails is not important for me, but I'm curious...

    @jcmarcos

    Checked the changelog?

    Improvement: Updated video.pvplugin to use latest libavcodec library (MorphOS only). Now supports more video formats, including several real video format variants

    I don't think anyone is working on taking avcodec and avformat libraries apart making them into reggae components... might be nice, but also quite an undertaking.

    Ambient just uses (directly or indirectly) ffmpeg library to decode frames, just like scalos does with this video preview plugin (scalos links statically ffmpeg to this plugin). In ambient public cvs, you can even see the related avcodec code for months (if not years). The only reason it actually doesn't work is that it relies on a shared library that wasn't released in morphos 2 for several reasons, the main one being that ffmpeg API is not stable (stable as in changing, not crashing), which is an issue when you make a shared library.

    maybe avcodec.library can be divided into main avcodec.library with stable api and plugin with unstable api

    There are no clearly defined rules for what is stable and what is not, that is what makes it unstable.

    It shouldnt be enabled by default but could be activated by ambient.prefs
    or something.
    But that is something the MorphOS must decide
