oGalaxyo explains the status quo of Atlantis in an open letter to the MorphOS community.

Hello,

I'm oGALAXYo writing a few lines about the current situation of the Atlantis (Web browser) port to MorphOS. As many of you people know I got the friendly free hardware offer from bbrv on 10-07-2003 to port Atlantis to MorphOS.

As I vaguely described a couple of times my plans are to port KHTML together with
the AWeb team to either AmigaOS and MorphOS so we have a common framework.
Then I gonna start porting Atlantis over to use that engine and to use a native
MUI GUI. But all this are ideas that need to get investigation first and there
is always the possibility to fail due to unknown and unforeseen things.
I've been in contact with Henrik Mikael Kristensen (HMK) the lead AWeb open
source maintainer since the Atlantis port information showed up on ANN.lu on
the 13-07-2003. We exchanged various emails about porting KHTML and the request
of both sides to work as team on it (to not duplicate work, to progress faster)
has been welcome fairly nice. HMK meanwhile has contacted the KDE people and he
finally received an answer a few days ago and he immediately contacted me about
that so I am now subscribed to the AWeb development list to discuss further
things and see how the future looks like.

It is indeed true that I'm still waiting for the Hardware to show up here and I
was nearly at the point where I wanted to back out completely from the project
on 15-08-2003 because I'm waiting for five weeks now and nothing has shown up
here. Five weeks that I could have used wisely to make myself comfortable with
the new situation: being on MorphOS rather than Linux, putting my code back on
the hard disk, read the SDK of MorphOS, learn about their tools, memorize the
things around Amiga (which I have left seven years ago), learn about the
Hardware and many more. This all needs time it's not like you come to a
different platform and start coding from day one without proper investigations
please allow acclimatisation. I had various conversations with nice and
friendly people working at GENESI through chats on IRC and they told me that I
will receive my Hardware through Thierry Velasco from GENESI but due him to be
in vacation for quite some longer time he should be back on 18-08-2003. So I'm
still waiting till end of the month in hope something shows up here. During the
time I got a lot of friendly emails from people all over the world who welcome
the port, who told me to have done a nice work on Atlantis and even in CHAT
I've been asked several times by people how far the Atlantis port has come and
if they can see some screen shots already. It's sad to disappoint these people
by telling them that I haven't even started. Anyways over the past weeks I had
quite a lot of discussions and many of them was around Atlantis and it's
status.

I don't exactly know what I will be getting from GENESI or If I get something
at all but I will continue waiting until end of this month. If nothing shows up
here then I will contact bbrv and some public locations where I announce that I
will back out. This then means NO Atlantis port and NO investigations from my
side to get KHTML on MorphOS. I need to do this since I have private life as
well, searching for a new job to make money and stuff like this and not keeping
myself caught in the hope to receive something (2 months wait, 3 months wait,
...). I also hope that I'm getting some stable hardware and not flaky ones
since I like to work seriously on the project. I had various chats with people
about the non aprilized boards and heard from all of them that they cause a lot
of pain e.g. data corruption, loss of data on the hard disk, freezes and so on
and you can imagine that these are no conditions to work on something serious.
Ok I hope I was able to give a current status on how the current situation
around Atlantis is and how I personally see things. I have also answered on the
Dillo thread on Ann.lu 1-2 weeks ago. You can go on below link and read some
more of my statements.
