What Happened to MorphZone.org's Usability?

    • Only 5 posts shown on front page; now one has to look for threads in the huge and unusable forum sub-page; huge waste if time. Morphzone.org is a forum. Why not keep it that way?

    • No information about poster/ person who replied, so one can't decide to ignore something before actually checking out the thread

    Who had this 'smart' ideas?

Can we get back some usability, please? Bad enough already that the site layout breaks in various situations and the loading speed sucks because all the huge images used for it (not everyone has 6 MBit or better connections).

And simple lists fuck up too (looks very strange here in Safari at least) as you can see in the opening post of this thread. OMG!

It's so sad that it's funny again. Sorry. :)

What happened is that the responsible site module broke. The setting is STILL "25 posts"!

Thanks for your comment. Your sweet and lovely tone is always highly appreciated.

Okay, now it's better again. Next time better experiment with such changes on some local test copy first. Also avoids the risk to accidentally open a security hole if something goes wrong. :)

Site looks good to me. I must have missed out on seeing any ugliness and unusable formats. I haven't checked it yet with OWB on MorphOS2.4, but will later.

Morphzone seems now to be limited to be viewed by OWB. All other browsers don't show the site correctly.
I this really intended for a comunity like MorphOS-Users ?

Have you tried Sputnik and Netsurf?( The lack of JavaScript might be a problem regarding the latter. But reading the forum should be fine.)

Well, the website is called morph.zone, not ibrowsezone.org. IBrowse users are actually a minority among MorphZone's visitors.

There will be more changes in the near future that *absolutely* require a CSS browser. This is not so much a question of looks, but about new functionality and the amount of work that is required to maintain the system as a whole.

Obviously there was no testing done with IBrowse or any other of the low footprint Amiga browsers.

Like I mentioned on IRC yesterday already: I don't mind if the background images etc. are missing (quite the opposite as it makes the page as fast as it should be), but f.ex. the menu is now somewhere at the bottom of the page and you have to scroll 2 miles to reach it. I don't think a valign=top will hurt the new CSS layout and will keep the site usable on old browsers.

With Sputnik the site works okay, too. Good for Efika users. Sputnik seems often to be forgotten by some ppl. Would like to see another update of that. I think the new design is a step forward.
But indeed maybe some work should be spend on trying to make it also a bit more useable with a non css browser. I think a compromise to use new layout techniqies but keeping a simle usability for in css browsers should be possible (I think a clever order when elements are loaded should do the trick). .

    Hello! Very good restylinig! Congratulations!
But..... I tried to login as usual. I couldn't write my nick in the box, only password. Obviously, that generated an error and bring me into the login page.
There I could insert my nick in the right way. =)
I guess this is normal, as I read "login block" up there..
    Anyway, really nice!!!

Let us go mobile, too! Must be a rendering plugin for this CMS.
Was: Mac Mini PPC running MorphOS 2.4
Now: Amiga Forever 2010 with AmiKit and AmigaSYS
Not used: Icaros Desktop 1.2 (reason: no wifi)
    Planned soon: an OS4 system
Shortly then: a MOS notebook (wifi is a must-have)

I love this design. Come on guys, while we have CSS capable browsers why should we go back in the future and support non CSS webbrowsers?

    @pampers:

Because of the much smaller footprint of these browsers; which is especially useful on machines like the EFIKA with less than 128MB memory available. You can't always quit everything else just to fire up the browser when you quickly want to ask a question on morph.zone.

Also many of our visitors might still use AmigaOS which has no (working/ usable) CSS capable browser at all. Why make the site hard and uncomfortable to use when a few easy adjustments (which do not hurt the CSS layout at all) make it *noticeable* better? :-)

    @ DiskDoctor

The quick answer is that there is not.

There are a lot of things going on right now. Support for older low-resolution mobile phones is not particularily high on the to-do list. On high-end smartphones, the website should work as-is. The usability won't be perfect, of course, but reading a couple of messages should be fine.

Also, you might be interested to know that MorphZone offers RSS feeds for the latest MorphOS news and forum discussions.

Velcro_SP: I have to day since there is MorphOS with Mac support this site seems to be a little bit more active. I think there is a good time to update some sections on the site like bounty (make it more open for new ideas), tutorials or downloads.
