So exactly how *bad* is the Pegasos 1?

And is it still possible to get the April "fix"?

Roughly the same quality as an A1SE, very similar bugwise.

From what I hear if you plan to just run MorphOS its just fine. I know a lot of people are still using them for that.

I have no interest in Linux -- I'm curious about MorphOS, though -- think I'll keep an eye on the auction.

I can see why a collector would want a Pegasos 1 without April, but if you are thinking about really using the computer instead of putting it in the closet the first thing you do, then you should really reconsider this I think (sorry redrumloa! ;-)).

Buy yourself a nice Pegasos 2 instead, or at least an Aprilized Peg1, or chances are you will regret yourself!

However, I am keeping an eye on the auction myself, I think these boards are a bit rare these days (so don't come here bidding now people ;-)) ...

    What exactly ARE the limitations?

I'd pay a couple of hundred dollars to "play" with MorphOS -- but my curiosity doesn't quite rise to the cost of a Pegasos II, I'm afraid.

Its fine to play with MorphOS. People are using them now and make software with them. I think most of the issues are all linux based problems. If the price is right then I say go for it.

It is not too bad. Only major issue is DMA trash due to lack of cache coherency. But in my experience it is not big deal with proper precautions. After all, I developed lot of software with my unfixed Peg1 board (I got Peg2 only few months ago). Always make sure you have a working backup of your work.

Certain combinations of gfx card and tv card wont work but it is not big deal.

Peg1 is good enough (I use it every day) but no April devaluates the
machine a lot. Anyway, I used such a machine for months too, and it's
not useless. Just be aware that any data on your HD may become corrupt
at any time for no reason. It doesn't happen often, but it can happen
and will happen sooner or later. As (unnoticed) corruption of some
file can lead to any number of other problems, such as crashing
applications or general instability, you will get a system that you
can't really rely upon, when something seems wrong it might be because
of this, it's probably not, but you never know.

Then again, as long as you don't keep vital data on it and no disaster
hits you if you need to make a complete reinstall, it will run just
fine for weeks or even months.

What about using a pci ide card (ala the A1XE) to get around the DMA problem -- would that work?

    Hmmm . . .

So -- the threat of a corrupted drive is always hanging over your head.

Probably not a smart way to go then.

    Oh, well.

Its no worse the the A1 G3 systems, the XC I guess they were? If it doesnt go over $120 I say its a good deal to play. I will tell you one thing, if you get it soon after you will get a Peg II. I would put money on that one.

Well, price is not too bad either. Only problem is that you have to spend about 200 euros in order to get it functional (RAM, HD, mouse, kb etc).

I dont think it could replace your A1 because within the next OS4 update you probably get working UDMA. Within pre-april Peg1 and MorphOS you never get UDMA that works for sure. It depends on what you need.... My old setup was A1200 + BPPC/BVision. Pre-April Pegasos I was perfect replacement desipite of DMA probs. (Considering I got it for free was unbelievalble at that time... heh...). Since you get working UDMA within OS4 update soon... For MorphOS you never get such update. But it could be worth of try still. To run some MorphOS native software, nothing else.

Unfixed Peg1 is still brilliant machine (IMO). But Redrumloa should give it away for free I think :)

Is there any way to disable DMA anyway?

I think it might be possible (and perhaps economical) to set something
up so that you keep your data on a device mounted over a network. Of
course, network traffic also corrupts, but I'm not sure if it will
send corrupted data unnoticed, and if it receives it and crashes
that's nothing that won't go away with a reboot anyway.

    @merko

You cant disable UDMA. And advantages of UDMA are greater than possible data trash, anyway. 50MB/s vs. 16MB/s with heavy CPU usage? No way.

Ethernet trash will happen still but TCP handles those and fixes errors automatically. It can slowdown Internet access to few kilobytes per second, that is all. Some lockups may occur but it is not too bad. The network traffic wont corrupt.

I agree that $120 would be a very good price -- to bad that the April fix isn't still available, though.

I'll still keep an eye on the auction, though -- I'd hate to see TOO good a deal get away!
