Hi all,

since the dealers (GSS, Vesalia, ...) obviously have Pegasos2 in stock again, I'm sure we will see a lot 'new faces' here on MorphZone.org in the next days/weeks.

Besides the saying of "Welcome!" I think it's a good idea to share our experience with the new users.

Back then in 2003 when I got my Peg1 I also had a lot 'newbie' questions, and a similiar (successful) thread on amiga-news.de (yup, back then i didn't knew about mz.org) helped a lot of us to solve first problems or getting answers. So I hope this very thread will become also succesfull and helpful for the new users w/o the need to search around a lot in old topics.

So please keep this thread on top the very next days by posting useful information and tips which could help new users. And new users can post questions here, w/o to have fear to ask something again wich was asked already a lot in old topics.

Help on IRC:

besides morph.zone you also can join an IRC channel for getting quick help (most of the time a lot very helpful ppl are around). You can access the channels with the mz.org webinterface (after you logged in) or by using an IRC client and join ARCNET (de3.arcnet.vapor.com or full serverlist: http://www.arcnet.vapor.com).

Channels:

#morphos - general morphos related support, discussion, etc.

#morphzone - the official mz.org channel
#morphsdl - sdl developer channel
#phoenix - channel of the phoenix developer consortium
#amiganews.de - channel of amiganews.de, but since most of the time only morphos users are around we could call it the 'german morphos channel'

TIP: even if you're not a developer (yet) it's very usefull to install a MorphOS Software Development Kit (SDK). It contains a so called 'geeks gadget environment' which contains a lot helpful tools and a proper setup which certain software (e.g. quick unix ports) needs. And you'll also get MorphED. ;) You can download the full SDK after registration on mdc.morphos.net.

tipps for hardware issues:

Remember to use only 80-wire ata cables (not only for hd but also for cdrom).

Best if buying Ram at your Pegasos dealer (he knows the best types)

Read the specs of the interanl connector carefully. Cabling the internal usb connector:

At the mobo there are four panels near the memory slots present. Two of
them (the both neigbouring to th ecpu slot) are for IDE, then there
are two more left one for the floppy (well noone needs this..) and one
26 pin connector (just neighbouring the memory slot) for multiple
purpose. If you look at that connector there are two rows of pins. If
you look to the mobo that the front panel of the Peg (i.e. the
external ports like parallel, usb, ps/2) are on your left hand you
have to count the pins of that connector from the top on. The
right pin row starts from the top with one not used pin and then
4 pins for usb connectivity starting with (counting from top
downwards!!)

- gnd
- usb signal D+
- usb signal D-
- usb 5 volts

your case should offer four cables per usb connector on the front.
These cables should be taged somehow like usb1 gnd, usb1 D+, usb1 D-,
usb1 5V and the same set with usb2 gnd, usb2 D-, ... Choose the 4
cables according to one connector and plug them into the connector.
Take care that you dont mess up one of the cables, your Peg would not
thank you that!

One question, does the Peg need a powersupply with one of these 12V square 4 pin connectors? It is not included on many older ATX powersupplies (but I found out it was required by newer motherboards, so apparrently the ATX PSU specification has changed).

There is 12 V on Pin 10 of the 20 pin standard connector of ATX PSUs. No extra connectors needed.

IIRC new SATA devices need new power connectors but since SATA is not present on the Peg (well, UDMA 100 is quite speedy, only advantage I see for SATA currently would be that the cabling becomes a bit nicer) there is no need for SATA power connectors.

You can happily use every ATX PSU out there (given the fact that it is not out of order ).

be prepared for MVP, an share- and freeware package soon to be finished.

@ GMKai: What is that MVP? Please tell me more.

I believe you are speaking of the Pentium 4 'extra juice' connector....no, the Pegasos (neither 1 nor 2) requires this connection....just the regular ATX (20 pin?) power connector

Software tips:

morphOS 1.4.2 don´t have a lot of needed files "libs, etc..." for your old apps and games, so be carefull and use a monitor system like SnoopDOS to see wath is missing, copy only the needed files for your old apps, and try to avoid mix the 68k files with the .elf ones, i mean don´t replace the files inside YOUR-MORPHOS-SYSTEM-HD:Morphos/, they are all MOS PPC Native and need to be replaced ONLY when you really know wath are you doing, the old files (68k) must go to the folders outside this location, following this "rules" i guess your setup will probably be out of troubles and MOS will be healt allways .

about MVP ( not MCP):
it is a collection of share- and freeware that is installed via a Hollywood-Exe.
For now it includes about 70MB Software.
The package is going into Betatest right now.
It includes MUI-Classes, Internetsoftware, tools and games.
For advanced users its not that neccesary to download it, but maybe you can have a look later.

For the users who're old school amigans, the best advice I can give is to simply make your old Workbench: partition available for file copies. It's quite amazing how quickly a new MorphOS install can feel like home if you can use Opus or Filer to snatch up missing libs for your favorite applications.

Everyone should be wary of installers, and should always select "create a logfile" when using installer. I cannot count the times over the years that an installer's logfile has saved my data.

Those completely new to MorphOS should learn a few real basics:

Right "Command" + E, brings up the "execute command" box, very useful for quick commands such as "Assign TempName: RAM:"

Instead of "tabbing the icons," if the batteries in your cordless mouse goes out--hold the Left Command key down, and use the arrows to move the mouse. To left and right click, use LCommand+ALT and RCommand+Alt respectively.

I probably reiterated someone else's advice n' such, but some of the basics are always the same.

Here's a really practical advice :

When you encounter a problem (if it be hardware or software related) feel free to start a thread or ask the helpfull and wise people on the morphos #irc channels, but....always search in the forums of MorphZone first! In the time that MorphZone has gone online, it has gathered an incredible ammount of information within it's thread/forum archive.

A quick how-to:

1. Use the "Search" box on the front page and enter keywords of your problem; tadaa

You can almost everytime find an old thread about a similiar problem you're dealing with, and if it doens't answer your question, just resurrect it. And if you cannot find any thread related to your problem, than a new thread would most definitly be in place

Hi,

I'm (not yet?) a new PEGASOS user. My Amiga ist still
standing in the corner but I have not really worked with
if for years. Some time ago I saw a PEGASOSII demonstration
and I was impressed and now I saw a nice offer for a complete
system (without case, mouse and keyboard) for 760 Euro.

Once I heard that there is this new G4 with less power consumption
so that you do not need a fan for the 1 GHz version, but I do not think,
that it is the one used in the current PEGASOS offers. I also heard about
the G4 with higher clock rates (back then they wrote that PEGASOS
might support those CPUs when they are available).

Can anybody tell me, if there will be a PEGASOS with these CPUs in the
near future or if it is better to just buy the beginners package from Vesalia
(that I mentioned above) because there will not be a PEGASOS with the
new CPUs in the near future?

Is the standard processor fan in the G4 PEGASOS very loud?

I'm a new peg user!!!!! probably tomorrow when I'll get my peg1 from another pegasos user who did the upgrade.

I have here my radeon 9100 and the 80 pin eide cable waiting (beside the case of my dead pc and other pieces of hw) for the peg.

I have one question, as customer can I download the superbundle from somewhere? I registered to the site but it says that new accounts are suspended. Is there any chance to get it anymore?

When I'll install mos I'll surely have more questions...

Ok, I know this is in the manual, but I took pictures of my Pegasos 2 a long time ago and put the names of connectors on them to make it easier too se where stuff goes. And made a small drawing of the misc connector while I was at it.
