Does the sound and NIC work with Gentoo?

I installed Debian with the 2.6.4 kernel, but the KDE "artsd" uses >80% cpu time when using the onboard soundchip and I wasn't able to configure a SB Live on Debian :(

Anyone with good working Linux sound on the PegII?

I noticed this problem occurs when using alsa drivers and arts... it's a pain in the arse. I don't have another sound card to try.

I fixed this problem by installing the complete ALSA package (apt-get
install alsa), then it seems to work.
But now XMMS don't work anymore with latest ARTSD, but this is a known
problem and has nothing to do with PPC or Pegasos...
So I just disabled the ARTSD crap and XMMS uses the soundcard alone :)

Well but I didn't get the Soundblaster working, because it doesn't
seem to be in the kernel or available as kernel module for 2.6.4 ...
seems I have to compile it myself one day... but onboard sound works
good without ARTSD, so I will do that when I have too much time!

I would recommend using Gnome instead of KDE. The 2.6.4 kernel has built in ALSA sound .....

    Magnetic....you got debian working on a V3500?

It seems (to me) that the tdfx module doesn't work correctly with the X server...leastways I can't get it to work.

    vi /var/log/XFree86.0.log shows:

[EE] TDFX(0): No valid PIO address in PCI config space

    Any ideas anyone?

    Obviously I run Gentoo. ;)
I always disable arts since I have had audio sync problems with MPlayer when using arts. It' still possible to compile the OSS driver with both 2.4 and 2.6 although I would recommend using alsa since OSS is rarely updated anymore.
Another problem of using arts is that not all programs support it and if artsd tie up the soundcard you might not be able to start applications that want to use it directly.

    @JKD

got a similar problem with my Voodoo 3000 AGP, when I try to run XF86, I've got nothing at all (the screen goes blank) neither I can switch to another tty. :( I've tried everything, thus include dpkg reconfigure xsever-xfree86, editing XFreeConfig-4, BusId is correct 1:0:8 AFAIK, XF86Config, starting tdfx module via modprobe/insmod... arghhhh I give up. :P

The oss/free drivers are really garbage and outdated. Use alsa or kernel 2.6 (which includes alsa).
