    Hi all,

i am interested in amiga, morphos and i like different systems and i like experiment.
But for me is quite impossibile use amigaos4 or morphos3 because hardware is too expensive and not available.

I think powerpc era ended 10 years ago.

My question is, after morphos demo in 2019, is possible use morphos on amd64?
Can morphos give us a new system? amiga games emulation is ended with uae, winuae, mame etc etc.

i don't want anymore another amiga emulation and another system only for play games but a system to try new software for my home needs.

If there was a new os compatible with amd64 I would be happy to buy the license

If it was, you can be sure it would be on the official website :-)

    ok,
but is possible, in near future, have a x86 or amd64 port of morphos?

That's not quite true. You can get hardware for MorphOS real cheap or even for free.

yes but is an obsolete hardware not suitable for internet browsing, word processor etc.
Too much obsolete... it is from the Mesozoic

You can install an AROS distribution on your amd64 computer.

You could use MorphOS on QEMU and your AMD64 computer. Very slow, but maybe it's fast enough to snif into MorphOS.

I never had a problem to find a cheap MorphOS capable hardware. I paid 60 EUR for my G5 and picked it up on a Sunday in the neighbourhood.

I have to say that I agree with him. I've been a MorphOS fan for years and years. Used it for years. But I have barely touched the OS in something like 5 years now. I just have no desire to run it on hardware circa 2006. None, not even a little.

Sometime years and years ago, there was a brief demo of MorphOS booting on and AMD x64 processor... then... nothing... years and years of.... nothing.

I love the progress the OS itself is making. Wayfarer is amazing. But I will not buy an other outdated 2006 piece of ancient hardware to run it on.

I don't care what platform it's ported to. Just as long as it is currently in production.

@ matteo - Web browsing is often the most intense use of a MorphOS system, so I agree web-browsing is not the joy it was when initial adaption of G4 Apple systems for MorphOS was in its early years, but it is still usable - thanks to Wayfarer (jacadcaps & Piru, etc.). 8-D

Whereas native software runs very quickly (fast) . . . even on old 'Mesozoic' hardware (from 2006'ish) (were there dinosaurs around way back then? Apart from me :-?)

    How fast can you type . . . to be able to outpace a 1GHz G4, or even a lot faster 2.5GHz G5 CPU . . . when wordprocessing? :-?

It would of course be nice to have even faster hardware, but for my needs my iMac 2.1GHz G5, and other hardware, suits my requirements nicely for now. 8-D

As I'd rather have an OS I like to use, rather than one that takes control of my system and won't let me use it until it has updated itself time and time and time again, day after day. :-(

I would say that web browsing is acceptable - not really enjoyable or anything that I would like to use full-time but can be used from time to time to get the info from the net. Other than that, the system is responsive and nice to use.

But I tend to agree with Matteo on one thing - HW, albeit cheap and still easily findable, as mentioned by some of the people in this thread, is not really good - I have 2 G5's and they are in a fragile state (I never know if the next time will be the the last one that it boots up). 2.7 already broke twice (cooling and PSU), the other one is in a bit better shape but I don't know for how long.

So the question for me is not that I need latest and greatest but something more reliable (and a bit more speed wouldn't make things worse, ofc). PMacs weren't exactly stars of reliability back then and now, when they're getting older, things are getting worse.

We should have have some roadmap for the OS going forward, that's for sure.

On the one hand, it is sad that current hardware is hard to get and expensive. But on the other hand it's really nice that these old devices get a second life with a current OS. And as others already wrote, these iMacs or PowerBooks are really cheap and it is a pleasure to use MorphOS on them.

Furthermore, I think we will get a new platform to run MorphOS on. But will it be AMD64? I rather think it will be RISC-V or ARM64...

The PowerMac and Powerbook offer a very viable and affordable path. I own a 1.67 Powerbook, a 2.7 GHz PCIX, and a 2.5GHz PCIe (converted a 2.0 GHz, single processor). They all have fast SSD or m2.nvmes, with all the cache settings and optimizations out there for speeding up Wayfarer and for most of the browsing I do it works just perfectly. There are a few websites that it crawls on and I just use other systems for those sites.

My main powermac is the 2.5 and I used it daily with 2 27 inch monitor for my old eyes and it works perfectly for iris, pagestream, polyorga, vpdf, and a ton of other programs I use daily on it. The response for everything is almost instantly and provides a perfect experience for what I use it for. The 2.7 plays very dense 1080p media (15 GB files across the NAS).

The 2.7's need to be converted to heatsinks from any other pcix system (2.3 or slower).

To my knowledge the Powermacs are still overall the fastest option you can buy to run MorphOS and hardware is very plentiful still. They are always on ebay and see them also all the time on craigslist/facebook.

It would be nice to have a faster, more modern option sure and when the day comes, MorphOS will continue to be developed and offer more that any other Amiga flavor option by a very great bunch of guys that have been great to work with over the last 20+ years and have very consistently updated and supported their product. This alone makes this offering VERY unique and stand out. These guys are quietly coding away on 3.19, which I am very grateful for...

To me doesn't make sense to not use a great solution because the hardware is older, especially one as good and capable as this one. I just retired my main pc laptop that was over 10 years old and it still did a fine job for me, so always having the latest isn't really necessary for me. I read a blog a bit ago where some amiga user who actively used 4.x on PPC hardware said he didn't like MorphOS because the updates were too incremental. That was a head scratcher moment for me to say the least, clearly he didn't give MorphOS a chance where if he did I'm sure he would have been more of the opinion of most MorphOS users I know...

ok, maybe powermac is a good solution for you, not for the future, but for me is a bad solution.
I think it's time to move forward and plan the future

At the moment I don't want to buy an old pc from 2006 (17 years) and think it might fit me, because.. it doesn't fit.

    I totally understand your sentiment.

The MorphOS Team isn't in the habit releases a statement or a promise until it is almost a 100% done deal. I get why they do that certainly, but it will limit what they are willing to tell us on the future roadmap.

If space is an issue, the PowerBooks are really incredibly good. For most things they are just as fast as the powermacs and take up a small foot print, and you can drive another monitor for multiple screens.

I use MorphOS daily for work and don't game on it. The productivity programs are really quite good on it, a base install gives you most items already. For work it is really a joy for me to use. For the few items I may need something more, the Docker on my NAS works fine and wayfayer can access it no problem.

I really agree in that new hardware would be really cool, but I'm not going to let that interfere with what I have right now...

I do wish you well on your Amigaland journey!

A roadmap would require to assign certain tasks to individual developers who then are expected to work x hour/week on that issue.

Reality is, it is all a hobby project and a developer might work anywhere from 0 to 50 hours on any given week.

That is before some loosing interest or rage-quitting over minor BS.

-> MorphOS on AMD might happen next year, it might happen in 10 years or never at all.

I always thought of MorphOS as a small or part time company that the managers have a good time working there.

Hobby to me has implied limited response, ott promises, or low expectations.

MorphOS has been like interacting with a business that cares about it's product.

Given the fact the team has been together for 20 years, is damn impressive.

They also chose wisely (like in the Last Crusade :)) not to mess with hardware and to just focus on the OS, now with maybe 30 + releases of the OS, I would say that choice bore fruit.

If I was a millionaire I would buy these guys a Lambo or something, they really deserve it. All the countless hours of work and they keep out of all the typical Amiga politics and keep plugging away. They don't get NEAR the credit they deserve.

    You guys rock!

Absolutely! I'm following the whole Amiga scene, including OS4 and "Classic" but the only real and professional work that came out so far was from MOS team. That's why I bought 2 MOS licenses and none of the other ones :).

MOS team deserves all the praise they can get.

    Good points!

The OS has become an App rich environment...

If you think about it with a 5 minute OS install, you get not only a great OS experience, but email, web browser, pdfs, burning and ripping tools, multiple media players, and a bunch of other things I'm not thinking of.

Heck, trying getting email on any other Amiga(like) system now and it is impossible. Iris with a base install works perfectly and they will continue to add features and functionality. Crazy, now that I think about it.

But it's easy to solve your request, put 2-5 million euros on the table, and the MorphOS team will surely create the operating system for what you want.

I think that you're writing apologies because you don't want to spend a lot of money, you want a Linux.
MorphOs on PowerPC it is functional not a simple art like others operative systems, example Haiku, QNX, etc.
