    Hello

I am wondering if MorphOS will work on SAM460LE? It seems to be a nice entry for Nextgen Amiga.

240,- Euro for the motherboard. Then you can build it in a standard chase

I think MacMini G4 in the highest configuration is better and cheaper solution. If a someone prefers laptops (e.g. me) - PowerBookG4. The best config also is quite cheap. The only problem is finding hardware that is in good condition. But it still is possible.

    Please read this site carefully:

"This product is a pre-order offer. The final price of this pre-order product will be 739 Euros VAT excluded (european countries should add 22% VAT).
People that will purchase outside the scope of this pre-order offer will have to pay a final price of 789 Euros for the same product (VAT excluded)."

You need to get MacMini G4 1.5GHz or higher. The RTG VRAM is too little for good use I think. My PowerBook G4 1.64GHz is nice though. I rather buy this SAM460 card than X5000. I want a computer that can run both MorphOS and AmigaOS 4.1

Yes, but I am not interested in their bundle. Only in the motherboard. A bit unclear marketing ;/

I am wondering how this board compares to a Raspberry PI 4 in terms of performance. Would be curious about the comparison with the Mac Mini too.

Mac mini is much faster, that's for sure (except GFX card of course).

MacMini is fast machine, but VRAM 64MB (not to say 32) is terrible low for web browsing with plenty of tabs and for many games. 128MB is minimum for my graphics comfort. Better to take Powermac.

I don't see the the components on new Sam460LE yet, but it has the same CPU as Sam460Ex and it is SOC, with no other controller. Thus I can bet it will works.

And the price discussions are interesting, but waste the time. If somebody wants RPi or X86, please buy them. I also have them. If you can produce new modern and fast PPC machine for 200EUR, please do it. I will gladly buy it from you.

But if I will have Sam460, I will operate there rather AmigaOS, you can utilize better modern PCIe graphics cards and UVD video decoder.

I'm sure you won't be able to save two thirds of the price by sparing the backplate and the OS4.1 license, which is what the bundle consists of apart from the board itself according to the press release ;-)

$50 off the regular price? For a board with a less powerful processor than a Powermac G4 (or a G5)? Except for the ability to run OS 4.1 (which doesn't interest me), its got limited appeal. And Acube's pay 240 euros up front and we'll get it to you...eventually (on receipt of complete payment) doesn't make me feel real confident in making the investment.

Sorry for the poorly worded post.

It's also less powerfull then a Peg2 - it leaks Altivec!
This naked (and downstripped) SAM will cost over 700.- with NO RAM (hope you can find one), no GRFX-CARD, no SATA-Controller, no case, no powersupply and no drives! Think, complete system will cost much more than 1000.-

OK, you may have then a very unique board.

But this makes no sense for useing MOS. And if wanted useing MOS and OS4 too, it's better to look for a Peg2.

Btw: the 240.- is only comission.....

    Peg2, 3xPowerMac G5, 2xPowerbookG4, 2x MacMiniG4, Efika (again), A3000T and life is never boring.....

Yes, it is from one point of view.
Raw CPU power (MIPS) equals to Peg2 G4/1Ghz. My 1.33GHz Peg is about one-third faster.
Next, as you said, Sam lacks Altivec. Big malus for lame, mplayer, 3D and so.
Sam also has slower CPU write to VRAM (182 vs 223 MiB/s)

    But:
Sam has faster RAM (DDR2 vs DDR), faster SATA (PCI 66MHz vs 33MHz), faster write to VRAM with DMA (600 vs 184 MiB/s)
Also overall HDRLAB gfxbench2D is better (7595 vs 3341 pts with overclocked Peg2), Tower95 is a little faster (34-35 vs 33)

So it is not easy to say who is faster. I can benchmark it, if I have Sam. ;-)
Sam have from my point of view very big advantage: with AmigaOS and RX card there is UVD, Unified Video Decoder, where decoding is made completely by gfx card. Peg2 lacks it.

Opening more tabs increases VRAM usage? How so?

Sam460LE seems to be like the Sam460cr in functionality, just in another form factor (microATX instead of FlexATX) and thus with better utilization of board surface (i.e. no unpopulated chip footprints).

I think the real issue here is the high price per se, not the fact that pre-ordering will save you no more than the ridiculously low amount of 50 bucks :-)

Add to that the 22% percent italian VAT. and you end up at about 850 EUR for the vanilla board.

    No, thanks.

My mac mini never runs out of VRAM during browsing with a gazillion tabs open.

For web browsing the VRAM is prabably one of the least limitating factors. CPU power is what we are lacking in that domain.

And if the Mac mini i stoo weak, you can get a G5 which runs circles around the SAM. Ways faster cpu and you can use the best gfx cards supported by MorphOS.

I like my G5 imac isight. Comes with an XT600 128 MB gfx card. Nice system!

I am using a Radeon9000 with 64MB video ram on a FullHD screen and never had any issues with GFX memory. I even use multiple screens all day.

    Gaming is something else.

All this talk about better graphic cards does not matter, when there is no software using it. Not even partly. If you want some 300€ card for your 900€ computer, then do it. It is just important that the driver is happy and the demos are working fine.

This is like the old Amiga problem. People always wanted the maximum amount of ram installed, because it is possible and shown as free on top of your workbench screen. That free memory is a waste of memory was ignored. Most people you never really use it. They even needed to turn it off for games.

Indeed, the low-level software (i.e. drivers) for them is missing.

    > If you want some 300€ card for your 900€ computer, then do it.

GCN1-based cards can be purchased new for just under 100 EUR. GCN4-based cards start at 120 EUR.

    > It is just important that the driver is happy

It must exist before it can be happy :-)

    > This is like the old Amiga problem.

I don't think so. My impression is that MorphOS users who would like to have (3D) drivers for newer and better graphics cards also want to use software that makes use of them.

Listen, if you don't want to buy it for it's price, simply don't buy it.
No one needs to. It is easy.

I wonder if there is anyone who really has both Sam460xy and Powermac or Pegasos2 to tell us relevant comparison.
