The big WinUAE thread

I'd like to talk WinUAE. I use eUAE on my MorphOS system a lot, but everyone knows WinUAE is by far the most advanced and mature. I have a number of hard drive images with various configurations backed up, but haven't seriously used WinUAE in some years. I briefly tried getting OS3.9 with PPC after PPC support was added to UAE, but gave up after problems. I plan on trying that again and exploring even more exotic configs. I'll be asking a number of questions. Hopefully I will get some good answers and this will become what the title says, THE big WinUAE thread :-)

    Questions:
Are there any good guides and posts explaining the best config for OS3.X with PPC (WarpUp/PowerUp)?

Last time I asked Warp3D wouldn't work with PPC support and Wazp3D didn't either. I'm guessing this will never change?

Is it even worth it to use PPC support? I know, personal opinion.

What is your ultimate WinUAE config? Doesn't have to be OS3.X. Maybe an ultimate OS1.3 config?

    TIA.

Tony is hoping to create a Voodoo 3 driver using the QEMU stuff then you may get some Open GL and possibly Warp3D support. But it is still in works and not yet in the latest beta. Given he is upto Beta 20 of 3.2.0 it may come in future versions.

That would be MAME, not QEMU.

Last time I checked it seemed to be mostly focusing on OS4.1FE. Things may have changed it seems, thanks.

I saw a blurb about that in my searches. That would be really, really cool. That would be just about the last piece of the puzzle. Using actual physical Amiga hardware you can hold in your hands will never be beat for nostalgia, but for everything else WinUAE will be it.

I'm stuck with a very old version of WinUAE because for some reason newer versions don't recognise my hardfiles. Not sure if they changed it or whether the version I made them with had a bug. Anyway, they're just NDOS and unbootable if I try.

I suppose I could empty the lot into a USB stick from the old version and copy them into a new hardfile with the new one, but to be honest I don't see much point in trying to fix it at this point. The PPC emulation was just too slow, and I have an i7.

    Questions:

    1) What is faster, using a hard file or using a real dedicated hard drive?

    2) For configuring a fastest big box experience in WinUAE, would selecting an 040 or 060 be the better bet? I guess this is a matter of opinion, just curious thoughts.

Hardfile is faster. WinUAE's native file-handling is weird and inefficient, and NTFS (or FAT) is just not designed to handle files the size of Amiga ones any more, which makes it even worse. And even worse still, the Windows MFT would end up much bigger and fragmented and slower to access than ever.

Also, you'd regret not using one every time you spyware scanned, virus scanned or defragged your hard drive, or you made a backup, because all those little files would make it last ten times longer.

    Use hardfile.

Makes no difference to the speed of emulation. 060 optimised instructions took advantage of 060 specific features; they do nothing in a JIT.
