What version. I have been told that the 68k samba 2.x works. If there is enough interest for it , I can share my 1.9 samba compiled on 2.0.

Same like under like with the most other TCP/IP Stacks b4 except that you find the important config files under envarc:net

I'm trying Samba_3.0.4, SMBFS_1.71 and MiamiDX from MOS1.4.5 installation on MOS2 demo: here it works,
    but I have a very low speed with big files (aprox. >40Mb) transfers (20Kb/s!)...;
for the others files the speed is about 4Mb/s.

    bye,
    Vincenzo

Please do not use 3.0.4 (morphos native) , unless there is some feature in 3.x that you need.

    I strongly recommend , use samba for 68K !

So, could anyone who had even the slightest success share the knowledge of how to actually do this?

I've tried the big samba archive with about 20 binaries and a zillion other files. With this one, I can actually list the services in the workgroup that has been configured, but I don't have the slightest clue of how to actually do anything useful with it (I'm only interested in being able to transfer files, and of course the docs don't tell you anything about how to do this, in the best *ix tradition).

I also tried SMB-Handler, which however prompts me for a password, and there's no password for this share, so I guess something is wrong there.

SMBFS, finally, starts without complaining when I give what I believe is the correct options, but the 'status' command doesn't show anything more than 'SMBFS', and it's also impossible to break.

Btw, I would be happy to contribute by writing a simple step-by-step guide to setting up basic file sharing, if I could just get some hints for how to get it working. I intend to set this up for a Linux (ubuntu) machine as well as a Vista machine, so I guess this is a pretty 'vanilla' setup that should be typical for many users.

Seems I got SMB-Handler working now with Linux. At least I can read and write files, and it doesn't seem awfully slow either (the linux machine is on wireless at the moment, which kind of limits the speed :-)).

I think the problem before was that I had set a user name, when in fact I wanted to log in as an anonymous user (= no user name, apparently).

Anyway, if someone else needs help with this, please feel free to pm me and I'll start on a simple step-by-step guide.

I'm very interested having a step by step documentation.

I ran Samba on my old OS3.0 in 1999 and had lot of trouble on the begining.
Today, there's not an official mos samba and we dont know which is the best port.
The MOS2 TCP/IP stack is not describe on how to configure daemons to use Samba.

I'll do a try today but I'm not an expert Samba user.

Does somebody used Tango Network browser succesfully?

I would like to have that step by step guide.
And how is it working how is the speed and how it behaves when you wont to share files over 1 or 2 GB?
I use ATC here with FTP-Server on the Win Box but i can't share files bigger then 1GB over the Network.

    i'm interested in it too.
the FTP server trick is ok but i don't really like having a FTP server running on my LAN. The use of samba shares would be much better.

OK, I began to install samba and configur it.
    The installation is very easy.
    I choosed the Samba-2.2.5-68K.
My choise was done arbitrary cause nobody wrote something clear about it.

I unpacked the samba archive on a folder called Samba on my sys:
Now I have something like this:
sys:Samba/"all the folders contained on the archive"

then I edited my user-startup and added this 2 lines:

    Assign Samba: sys:Samba
    Path Samba:bin add

Next step is creating the Workgroup on MOS2.0 stack.
This is easy to do by editing the prefs on Network section and Users.
I added a group called WORKGROUP with ID 100.

Next step is creating the users on the MOS stack.
Always on MOS prefs, on the same page for groups we can create users.
I created 2 users user Pegasus and user PCguest. This users are part of group 100 and have an unic number ID.

    Next step is creating Hosts.
Always on MOS prefs on Host, I created a host called

Pegasus with my PEG IP 192.168.0.2
    a second host called
PCATHOME with my PC IP 192.168.0.52

We have a third host called localhost with IP 127.0.0.1

At this time, all the identification operations are done.
Unfortunatly, I dont find where to configure the Samba Deamons.

On AmiTCP, the configuration should be like this :

    AmiTCP:db/services

The following lines need to be added:

    netbios-ns 137/udp
    netbios-dgm 138/udp
    netbios-ssn 139/tcp
    swat 901/tcp

    AmiTCP:db/inetd.conf

The following lines need to be added:

netbios-ssn stream tcp nowait root Samba:bin/smbd smbd
netbios-ns dgram udp wait root Samba:bin/nmbd nmbd
swat stream tcp nowait root Samba:bin/swat swat -a

Now I need help to know where to add this informations on MOS2 stack.

    Thanks.

Since Netstack is essentially based on AmiTCP, it's the same. inetd.conf, services and others configurations files were just moved to envarc:sys/net/.

Cool i will try it tomorrow.
Afiak Samba-2.2.5-68K is not the latest Version that works with MOS, maybe someone that allready use Samba on MOS could give a hint what is the best (speed/stability) Version of Samba with MOS1.4.x and 2.0

Never managed to run any 68k samba linked against clib2 under 1.4.5 here, didn't try with 2.0 yet.

I have working Samba on MorphOS 2.
I use Samba 2 68k and modification of ENVARC:sys/net files.
All my MorphOS partitions are shared - read speed 3.5MB/s.

But it's like read-only, very small files can be written to the disk, but "larger" files (>1kB) can't be written - it's weird, maybe Samba config needs to be improved, but I tried everything (smb.conf).
