In their latest blog, bbrv talks about how Peter Czanik will be at the PowerDev Meeting #3 with MPC8610 and MPC5121e development systems running openSUSE 11.0. Peter will have a native beta Flash plugin to demo on the EFIKA/Open Client and the 8610 based system. From the comments we learn that it's a (very?) early beta, and that it's *not* something open source.

More info about PowerDev Meeting #3:

Will be interesting to see reports from that meeting...

Plugin plugging into what exactly? Anything to do with MorphOS at all?

Is "web browsers" a too wild guess?

Probably not. So which "web browsers" exactly?

No, that's not what you (and BBRV) wrote. Read your own (and BBRV's) posting again. You (and BBRV) wrote about "MPC8610 and MPC5121e development systems running openSUSE 11.0" and "a native beta Flash plugin [...] on the EFIKA/Open Client and the 8610 based system". Nothing about "openSUSE 11.0 ... on the EFIKA/Open Client" where "a native beta Flash plugin" will be demoed on.

"Peter Czanik will be there with MPC8610 and MPC5121e development systems running openSUSE 11.0."

"Peter will have a native beta Flash plugin to demo on the EFIKA/Open Client and the 8610 based system."

"Some headlines: the MPC5121E and the MPC8610 boards, MorphOS 2.0 on MPC5200B/EFIKA and on Pegasos/ODW, Flash plugin beta version for Linux/PPC, and more"

The Linux distro in question obviously seems to be openSUSE 11.0 (it's the version to be demoed on the new boards), which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone following Genesi developments, since this seems to be Genesi's Linux flavor of the season.

I honestly don't understand your point?

Ah well, I'm sure it will be a great event, and looking forward to see some reports from it... :-)

My point is: Contrary to what you claimed, you did not write above about "openSUSE 11.0 [Software A]... on the EFIKA/Open Client [Hardware 1]", but about "MPC8610 [Hardware 2] and MPC5121e development systems [Hardware 3] running openSUSE 11.0 [Software A]" and "a native beta Flash plugin [Software B] [...] on the EFIKA/Open Client [Hardware 1] and the 8610 based system [Hardware 2]".

...or short to hopefully make it easier for you to grasp:
Software A on Hardware 2 and Hardware 3 and Software B on Hardware 1 and Hardware 2. Nothing about Software A on Hardware 1.

    That's what you wrote above.

OK you seem to have trouble seeing the impact of the message due to ridiculous marking of words. I'll help you:

Flash has always been proprietary software which has forever been protected thoroughly through restrictive licensing to big corporations/high volume products.

Previously, flash hasn't been seen running on PPC except on PPC Mac's.

Now an early beta of Flash will be demonstrated on both existing Genesi PPC hardware *and* on CPU's/SoC's in upcoming Genesi hardware.

A few open source reimplementation efforts of flash has been seen. This is none of those.

All in all, this is potentially quite big, and worth keeping an eye on.

You are wrong about that sven luther and I had to have flash working for the ODWs that were the INternet Cafe @ the first SNDF Motorola show. These boxes were running in a thin client mode running latest firefox on debian with ppc flash plugin. (Motorola's own site was flash menued and HAD to work with it)

So point being macs arent the only ones.. granted that version of flash breaks easy but does work. Maye this one is fully compatible.

Maybe they are showing the gnash-plugin, which works for quite a while on linux-ppc.

No, I demoed Adobe Flash. It still can crash FireFox (as it also did during the demo in the middle of a youtube video 8-) ), but when it works, it works a lot better than gnash or any other flash replacement.

Thus there is certainly no chance to make it available for MorphOS as well, I suppose?

Well, if MorphOS can run Linux binaries, then it will work.

Hey thanks for posting here. Maybe you can give the morphos developers the sources with some kind of nda? This way we can have native morphOS version. This would make many people happy world wide and would be very little threat to any commercial plans you are genesi may have imo.

    Very cool! :-)

How "portable" is the code? I.e. is making it run on a none linux/unix OS doable? What is the license situation with Flash these days?

On a PowerPC? Does Adobe now support PPC Linux, or did you use an x86 emulator?

Well, I don't have the sources. I only got one of the first built binaries to see, how they run on current a future Genesi hardware. It runs nicely, even on the EFIKA, but clearly has enough bugs to keep it internal :-D
