    SkyOS now has fire fox. due to the incrediblely talented Robert, who completed the port (or almost) in 3 weeks. so i ask this question......why dont we again? (this is by no means intended to be rude or negative in anyway. I am simply corious as to what major hurtels and road bumps are stoping this from being a 3 week thing in itself)

    It's no wonder that he managed to port it that quickly since GTK+ was already available on SkyOS. To port Firefox to MorphOS you would either have to port GTK+ (or any of the other supported widget kits) or rewrite the rendering engine to use MUI/whatever instead. Either way it would be much more work than porting it to a platform that already has a widget kit supported by Gecko.

    IIRC SkyOS has a widely compatible API to the WinAPI. You only need to grab the Win sources of Firefox, do your modifications and there you go.
    MOS/MUI API is quite different from WinAPI or Linux/GTK API. It's a whole different league to port it to MOS.
    And remember: Repeating all over again to port a decent browser will not speed it up. *Everyone* of us is aware that a good browser is hardly missing.

    Didn't you know that Mozilla for MOS is finished and downloadable since months? You don't use Mozilla while we all do it since a long time..? How could you have missed the release and the jubilation of the community when it was released?

    The lowest tier (nspr) , which does the OS
    abstraction (file read/write etc), has been
    ported to AmigaOS3.1, so it should be no
    problem to build it on MorphOS.

    A first (non working) executable of amizilla
    has been built, so the source tree was
    successfully compiled once. (68k, no, it really
    did not work).

    At the moment we (jeff) are switching from
    static link libs to amigaos libraries (a2ixlibrary
    was extended to work in a cross compiler
    environment and added to the mozilla
    make environment). If this works for
    morphos? Most likely.

    There is progress, but (very) slow.

    But maybe you will have not enough ram, this
    is a full debug build (*which does not work!*),
    it has some 350MB executable size.

    UAE with OS3.1 can handle such beasts ..
    really surprised me.

    But as this is a useless first version, you better
    safe your bandwidth ;).

    @JACK

    I think that there are some more information about the porting status in the MailingList (Message Board), I'm going to subscribe it :)

    For now i don't know anything else :(

    @Zylesea
    a link would be great, even if there are only preAlpha stage builds (or less)

    o1i, well that's a big step though isn't it, that something compiled. Very interesting news!

    Are programmers still trying to port Mozilla as opposed to the stripped down Firefox? Wouldn't it be easier to work on Firefox. I don't think people want the full Mozilla as much. MorphOS has plenty of newsreaders and email programs already, it is the absence of a fully modern browser that is the obstacle.

    Even though AWeb and IBrowse and Voyager teams and others work hard and are making progress and we appreciate them... we still would like to get Firefox.

    But I still wish you good luck on compiling a version that runs, whether it is Firefox or Mozilla or whatever!

    @Velcro_SP:

    We should do a FAQ ;). Firefox is built from
    the Mozilla Sources. It is just a part of
    Mozilla, you select to compile with a few
    Makefile Options (more or less).

    Nspr is 100% common to both and that is, what
    has been ported so far.

    So if everything is done, it should be possible
    to build Amizilla and "Amifox" (?) ;).

    Why the *beep!* should it be called AMIfox or AMIzilla (some goes for MORPHfox or MORPHzilla)? Is the version for Windows called Winfox or the MacOS X version Macfox? No - the programm is called Firefox and Mozilla. Why not keep it simple and stay with those names?

    @Zylesea:

    Full ACK. The name was not created by me.
    But our CVS root is named amizilla, which
    is just a short form for Mozilla for Amigas.
    I guess, if it is really fully ported, the name
    does not matter at all ;).

    Yep - for the CVS it does make sense.
